As a Frenchman and citizen of France who grew up in Germany, I was always devoted to my studies and made them my priority, resulting in my being awarded a prestigious scholarship by the German Academic Scholarship Foundation (Studie Stiftung des Deutscher Volkes) for my university education, in 1998. However, my education was interrupted by the arrival of my son, now 20 years old. I am glad, looking back, that I made the correct decision, putting my son first because the time that we were able to spend together while he was little is priceless to me. I went to work that same year and have always been employed full-time, diving into the business world, learning all I could, saving money, and being a highly responsible father. By 2004, my wife and I were sufficiently solvent so that we could return to school while I continued working as an accountant. In May of 2004, I began studying through the INTEC (Institute National des Techniques Economies et Comp tables) in France, distance learning, with many credits granted due to examination at the national level. In this way, I could earn an undergraduate and two master's degrees – one in Accounting and Finance and the other in Accounting and Management in the space of only 18 months. Fifteen years later, I hope to earn a master's degree in law, the LLM, which I see as definitive and foundational for balancing what I hope to accomplish professionally, primarily concerning compliance. Much of what I have studied in a formal or academic setting has been in areas closely related to Commercial, Tax, and Labour Law. I could not be more engaged with business law issues and now seek a fuller immersion experience in the legal foundations of compliance, international commerce, and regulation. I am an accomplished executive working for a great company; I have served as regional head for Ethics & Compliance for the past five years. I wake up every day working in ethics and compliance with a great passion for improving the lives of those around me. My children are now adults; my son is in his third year of Law Studies in Paris. My daughter will soon begin an international baccalaureate program in Switzerland, where my wife works. I now spend my professional week in Madrid, Spain, but I spend every weekend in Switzerland with my wife and daughter. As of September 2020, I will relocate to Switzerland. In addition to the sheer excellence of your program and the fact I am a perfect fit with XXXX, your program is also my first choice among LLM programs because of its modularity, the opportunity to integrate additional courses through the curriculum, and the diversity of the student body. Your LLM program is one of only a few that would allow me to study and continue working full-time. I have been researching and applying behavioral science to my practice for the past seven years. For the past two years, I have been heavily engaged with research into artificial intelligence (AI) and its applications as they impact the areas of Compliance and Ethics. My primary motivation is to do all that I can to stay abreast of my field and make my work each day as effective as possible, improving the lives and safeguarding the livelihoods of corporations and individuals alike. The best way to prepare me as fully as possible to make my maximum contribution in this regard would be to earn the LLM in Compliance through the Institute for International Business Law at XXXX University. I especially admire the attention paid to the emerging ethical issues in AI, the stellar reputation and distinguished history of XXXX, and the unique nature of your program in Compliance, the only one with an entire big data module devoted to AI. In addition, the presence of the Exa scale InfoLab at XXXX University would be invaluable to my efforts to perform research for a thesis in innovative technologies as far as they can contribute to ethical compliance under the law. I seek the finest education in compliance globally, a complete immersion experience in the broad scope of angles that are brought to bear on compliance, and an excellent foundation in financial compliance, utilitarianism-driven regulatory compliance frameworks, and process compliance. Business Ethics are central to the focus I want to develop in my studies and are especially relevant for data-driven compliance, compliance as related to and advanced by artificial intelligence, and commercial mediation. I seek a thorough grounding in how our legal structures in Europe serve as the foundation for all compliance activities. I look forward to examining the legal frameworks that serve as the foundation of family, religion, beliefs, customs, globalization, and the relevance of these areas for compliance and ethics. I seek to contribute to the debate on fine-tuning our moral compass in a complex world beset by formidable challenges in many areas of human life, organization, and the essential functions of society. This will help me be of the most excellent service in the future to individuals, teams, organizations, and corporations dealing with ethical dilemmas, enabling them to thrive even in the face of the many challenges we face today. Meeting the needs of compliance and the demands of ethics in the future will require bright, ambitious, and courageous people who are willing and secure enough to challenge the status quo. I look forward to contributing to the radical measures that will be called for in the future to make life sustainable. This will require the development of a sound moral compass to guide the navigation of troubled waters and tensions that arise between Law, on the one hand, and what is morally acceptable on the other. By earning my LLM Degree, I hope to prepare myself for increasing leadership roles in compliance and enhancing my value and capacity to contribute to a corporation, enabling and promoting considerable team efforts that inspire new examples of prominent levels of corporate social responsibility. I hope to bring a solid professional background to your program with extensive experience in various domains of regulatory compliance, business ethics, and practical compliance program applications in ambiguous situations. Much of my work has entailed close collaboration with experienced lawyers, which will help me excel in your program as an original thinker in finance, management, and commercial law. Central to my quest is the search for innovation, especially as it relates to AI and how recent technologies will continue to influence the evolution of our legal frameworks in the future. Thank you for considering my application to the LLM Program at XXXX University. - MBA Business Development Personal Purpose Statement
Originally from Ukraine, I am making a permanent home with my family in XXXX, Florida, and I hope to earn an MBA at the XXXX School of Business at XXXX College. While I will be studying online, I enjoy the idea of being close to the institution in which I am enrolled. I love that we are one of the fastest-growing cities in the state, and I enjoy living between Tampa Bay and Orlando, home to some of the largest companies in the country. I appreciate that the XXXX School of Business at XXXX has one of the best MBA programs in Florida, with international accreditation by the AACSB. I could not be more enthused about getting started on the rest of my professional life at the XXXX School. I was born and raised in Odesa, Ukraine. I immigrated to the USA 9 years ago. Of humble origins, I knew economic struggle up close while growing up, and the difficulty of our circumstances was compounded by the sudden loss of my father when I was 12 years old. However, my mother and I found strength in struggle and determination in the face of failure , and we always remained optimistic and busy building a new life. In addition to my first quarter of a century in Ukraine and the last seven years in the USA, I have also lived in the Netherlands and Jerusalem for significant periods and gotten to know large swaths of Central Europe and Russia. I speak, read, and write four languages proficiently: Russian – native, Ukrainian – native, Polish – native, English – second language, advanced. I am currently working on Spanish. I find New York City especially delightful, and I most enjoyed our car trips across the US and down to the last island in the Florida Keys. I see earning the MBA Degree at the XXXX School as the best option for me to prepare myself for the most significant contribution that I might be able to make to my society. I am a good student who has always thrived on learning every day. I seek a total immersion experience in the academic business world, knowing all I can, especially about international business. Most of all, I strive to empower women in the workplace and help them achieve greater economic equality with their male counterparts. I hope to earn the MBA mainly because helping vulnerable people along the road to sustainable economic improvements is what I am convinced would bring me the highest level of life satisfaction. I also love learning for its own sake, especially human behavior, and organization. I could not be more excited about the prospect of earning the MBA at the XXXX School because of my profound admiration for your curriculum, covering exactly what I want to focus on. Most of all, I look forward to spending my professional life giving my all to that niche of corporate America where I am employed and doing all that I can to inspire and guide young people towards successful, fulfilling lives, both inside and outside the business world. As I see it, becoming a leader in the business world and the community goes together. I want to fill my life with creating new products, programs, and services on novel and creative platforms, serving to make peoples’ lives more accessible and safer. I look forward to spending my professional lifetime working alongside highly motivated and creative colleagues and entirely devoted to personal and professional advancement. Business innovations, e-commerce, marketing, international commerce, computer applications and data analyses, psychology and human behavior, art, fashion, beauty and cosmetology, and a healthy lifestyle all stand at the center of my world; all are integral facets of my professional frames of reference. I live to acquire and refine my knowledge base and cultivate creative thinking in all areas. For decades to come, I look forward to constantly improving my ability to combine family and career, earning my MBA, achieving financial freedom, perfecting, and practicing the four languages I speak, learning new ones, and becoming an increasingly influential global citizen. I hope to become an extraordinarily successful CEO of a corporation or leader of a social organization. I hope to teach and contribute to philanthropy later in my career. This is the optimal time to earn the MBA and excel in your program, especially now that I have 15 years of solid professional experience, much of it international. Earning two undergraduate degrees, one in Art and the other in Science, Journalism , and Finance and Accounting provides me with versatility and helps me understand the big picture. Increasingly, I find myself reading widely in the areas of Psychology and human behavior, along with spirituality, all of which are relevant to the efforts I hope to undertake over the long term in commerce and communications. Since nutrition and fitness are my top priorities, I anticipate having at least a half-century to put my MBA to effective use. My day jobs have been in administration, customer service, and management, and I have periodically been selected as employee of the month or year. When I worked at the American Embassy in Kyiv in 2009, I received an award for excellence from XXXX, the American Ambassador, of which I have long been incredibly proud. I volunteer in animal shelters and volunteer projects with my Church, which is also close to my heart. Thank you for considering my application to the XXXX School. People-oriented, I have long cultivated an excellent facility for connecting with patients and their families. At the same time, I am also most comfortable speaking the language of engineers and statisticians. Hard-working, I cannot imagine doing anything else. I see myself on an endless quest for greater integration and harmony between man and machine since this is where I see humans going in medicine and other areas. Teaching is also of fundamental importance to my identity and ethic of service. I teach clinical medicine to medical students and supervise research projects. In addition, I tutor foreign students in Israel from the University of Saint George's in London, helping with whatever personal needs they may have; and I tutor high school students from low socio-economic backgrounds as a part of XXXX's "Arrow" project. My long-term professional goals include becoming a distinguished academic cardiologist and, at the same time, a leader in the medical, high-tech industry, continuing to see patients and publishing my research. - MFA Personal Statement Editor Sample
A mature artist with many accomplishments under my belt, it is hoped that my extensive experience in Art will inspire me to contribute essential things to discussions with teachers and students in the academic world of art - since I am now very much dedicated to earning the MFA Degree. A long-time resident of California, I have been listening to commentaries about the large variety of art programs in my state for many years. Combined with my extensive research into what California has to offer, I am convinced that the best education in Art in the state is available at the University of California in XXXX; for this reason, UCXX is my first choice among MFA programs, and I very much hope to be accepted. I see UCXX as a cut above other programs on the West Coast, especially concerning dimensional art and sculpture, where I plan to focus my particular attention as a graduate student and beyond. I also see UCXX as a good fit with my interest in exploring and expressing social issues in art, making art that speaks to our day's burning controversies and humanitarian issues. My pursuit of an MFA degree focused on dimensional art represents an extension of my artistic journey into a three-dimensional universe, giving my all to my creations as a sculptor. Having taught Art for 23 years in a private school, I also look forward to qualifying to teach in the public school system since I thrive on new challenges and am increasingly drawn to the public arena. Now middle-aged, I find that the older I get, the more I become aware of and concerned with social justice issues, and I feel very strongly that this will occupy a prominent place in the art I hope to create in the future. A figurative artist with a burgeoning sense of social consciousness and concern with issues of equality, fairness, economic justice, the travails of migration, and the emerging threat against mother earth already wreaking havoc in many places such as Australia. That devastation concerns me increasingly. I worry for my children, their children, and life itself. I shall channel hope amid the storm in my art. I want to observe climate change in as many dimensions as I can. It is the human saga that interests me the most. Throughout my career as an artist for over two decades, I have worked as an illustrator for the game industry, editorial illustration, comic development, set painting, etc., and I am currently creating prototypes for the toy industry. I have been studying stone carving under XXXX, an adjunct professor at XXXX College, and mastering digital tools, including Z Brush, in the creation of advanced armatures for complex, challenging poses, allowing for greater freedom than with the standard, more intrusive armature that often blocks the view of the model by the artist. I work primarily from life and imagination, drawing upon many years as an anatomy and figure drawing instructor. My keen desire to increasingly work towards incorporating my civic consciousness into my art is underscored by the profound love that I have for my home state of California. My family came to California searching for work, seeking to build a new life along with so many other migrants fleeing the barren dust bowl for new promise during the Great Depression of the 1930s, working as migrant farmworkers and sharecroppers, fresh off the cotton farms of west Texas. This is one reason I find myself drawn to the thorny issues surrounding the politics of migration to California these days, especially when it comes to migrant workers who pick the produce in the same fields my family once toiled. We prospered in California along with the state itself. Now, as an educator and an artist, I want to increasingly give something back to the people and the future of our state by helping to advance the cause of Art Education and to do so as part of the public education system, helping to fan the fires of human experience as expressed through figurative art. I was born at Booth Memorial Hospital in the LA neighborhood of Lincoln Heights, and graduating in 1996, I went straight to work as a professional illustrator and artist and have stayed heavily engaged with my industry n for over 25 years. My clients have included Lucasarts Entertainment Company, Hasbro, Dog Town Skateboards, Dub House Records, Freewill Press, and Sega Japan. Awards include the New York Society of Illustrators Student Scholarship Winner in 1996 and the Best of Show Film Roman 1st Annual Competition in 1999; best Children's Book in 2004 awarded by the SF BAY Guardian; and numerous merit awards in Communication. It was a great honor to share the Hispanic Literacy Award with XXXX for the children’s book. It has also been a great honor to have my work featured in group and solo shows at galleries such as the New York Society of Illustrators Annual Show, 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco, Rico Gallery in Venice, and Circle Gallery Petaluma. I find myself inspired by creative dimensional art forms that speak to the profound loss involved when one’s loved one has dementia and the redemption that accompanies the loss. After earning my BFA Degree focusing on illustration at the Academy Art University, graduating in 1996, I went straight to work as a professional illustrator and artist and have stayed heavily engaged with my industry now for over 25 years. Finally, I appreciate the interdisciplinary nature of your doctoral program in Health Administration at __U and that you have a long and distinguished history as an academic institution. Earning my doctorate will enable me to make my maximum contribution to society, empowering me to fill leadership roles in healthcare management to reduce healthcare costs without compromising patient outcomes. I see debates in the USA over health care costs and the need for reform to be most engaging. I am well informed concerning the wide variety of proposals in this area that accompany the current race for the US presidency. I feel privileged to live in exciting times for healthcare management and contribute to its advancement in the USA. I keenly look forward to learning all that I can about health administration, regulation, and how policymaking in this arena affects the community. I appreciate that I am part of fast-moving developments. I long to be part of the ongoing systemic improvements that enable the US healthcare systems to adapt and streamline while America retains its status as a world leader in healthcare management systems. My particular focus will continue to be on controlling the cost of pharmaceutical products, contributing to the study and implementation of ideas and policies that help assure that prescription drugs and medications can be obtained by those who need them. I see supply chains or channels as the area where I hope to make my most singular mark professionally, as I see this area as holding especially great promise in terms of cost reduction. My professional future will be in drug regulation. One ideal position for me would be working for the FDA as regulatory personnel and investigative scientist. Given my interest in contributing to cost reductions, I pay incredibly close attention to the FDA’s accelerated process for approving generic drugs, which I see as having enormous potential in the future for making drugs available to those who need them. Having a share in bringing down the cost of pharmaceutical products and that of life-saving or prolonging drugs, is the noblest work and the most significant contribution that I might be able to my community as a very hard-working professional. I have extensive research and regulatory experience to help me hit the ground running in your program and excel. For an entire year, 2014, I had the enormous privilege of serving as a Research Assistant at the Lenfest Center for Sustainable Energy at Columbia University in New York. My research experience in the retail side of drugs will help me better understand the cost structure of US healthcare systems compared to those of other countries. I look forward to extensive exploration into this area as a doctoral student in Health Administration at U. Since January 2015, I have been a manager with XXXX Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in XXXX, CA. I very much enjoy my work conceptualizing and forming strategies for our efforts in CMC (chemistry, manufacturing, and controls), developing and evaluating plans for new injectable and inhalation products, investigating technical feasibility issues, due diligence, and IP (intellectual property) landscaping clearance. I lead research projects on in vitro formulation, device development, and silicon computational simulation and modeling of new products at three manufacturing facilities and one research center. I especially enjoy preparing regulatory submission documents and corresponding with the FDA. I have now been in the USA for eight years and have made it my home after 21 years in my native China, the last three studying in Shanghai, where I finished my undergraduate studies in Chemical Engineering. Having spent one year in Houston, two years in New York City, and five years in Southern California, I have now fully adjusted to American culture and society, the English language, and could not feel more at home; looking forward to continuing to build my career here in America where I will be able to learn and serve on the cutting edge of research in the area of Health Administration, with a focus on pharmacy supply-chain issues. - DSW Social Worker Therapist Personal Purpose Statement
Since earning my MSW in 2016, I have been busy gaining experience in my field and researching and reflecting on how to best advance my social work practice by earning the terminal degree in my area, the DSW. Entirely dedicated to lifelong education and career advancement, I hope to further develop my clinical, analytical, and critical thinking skills as a DSW student at the University of XXXX. I have served in several different social work positions in Texas and New York and now hold my LMSW license in both states. I have been doing my current job for more than a year as a Social Worker Therapist with the Department of Psychiatry at The University of XXXX. With experience working in various professional settings before, during, and after my studies towards the MSW, I have developed increasing adaptability, flexibility, and sensitivity to others. As a quick learner, I have become adept at crisis intervention and incredibly knowledgeable in this area, helping clients work through suicidal and homicidal ideation. Learning to think on my feet, I have also become adept at problem-solving and rapid intervention at the micro/clinical, mezzo, and macro levels, meeting the needs of my clients with engagement and fidelity. I am a critical, solutions-focused thinker, especially fond of psychodynamic theories and approaches and evidence-based treatments such as the ACT, CBT, etc.; working with marginalized adults of all ages; the common factors are low income and homelessness accompanied by mental health/psychiatric diagnosis. Typically, the male clients I work with are diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder, PTSD, substance use disorder, and addiction issues. Many of my clients are HIV-positive and are also members of the LGBTQ community. A handful of my clients have been Asian or Asian-American. I seek a total immersion experience at UX, in the integration of theory, practice, and research skills, reflective analytic and clinical skills, and the articulation of one’s theoretical and reflective knowledge in a way that reflects one’s grasp of the importance of research in social work practice and the development of research for the advancement of the profession. The federally funded project I am working on is UTHealth’s Homeless Outpatient Mental Health Expansion Services Program (UTHealth HOMES). The program aims to deliver evidence-based psychotherapy and mental health treatment to adults experiencing homelessness with a diagnosis of severe mental illness and a co-occurring disorder. I am a lead clinician in the field providing psychotherapy, treatment planning, diagnosis, administering clinical assessments, and performing psychometric screenings. I also offer field instruction, supervise MSW student interns, Psychiatry and Public Health professors, and assist with data collection, data analysis procedures, and program evaluation. Through discussions with community partners, regional stakeholders, and UTHealth’s Psychiatry and Public Health professors, I have gained a deeper insight into the complexities of our affordable housing crisis. I am passionate about brainstorming innovative ways to tackle the growing homelessness epidemic. It has been a special honor to co-author our program's Patient Psychoeducation Workbook. It recently submitted and assisted abstracts of our work as a co-author to the American Psychiatry Association and the American Public Health Association. Advancing the social work profession, primarily through psychotherapy, I will be able to contribute to dismantling the stigma concerning mental health, particularly in Asian and other minority communities, building awareness as a foundation of social change. I look forward to continuing to study the criminalization of race, gender, and sexuality, implementing trauma-informed and culturally competent practices, and mental health treatment programs for adults experiencing homeliness or those who are at risk for homelessness. I seek to utilize the conceptual frameworks found in the literature of Neuroscience, Neurobiology, and Epigenetics to understand trauma better and help with treatment planning for Major Depressive Disorders, PTSD, etc. I look forward to exercising my leadership skills and helping to build awareness of mental health issues in the community, particularly the high rates of suicide among Asians/Asian- America Implementing culturally relevant interventions is incredibly close to my heart. I am passionate about designing mental health treatment for and contributing to the de-stigmatization of LGBTQ+ individuals/couples. I have a particular research interest in Asians and Asian-Americans, my ethnic group among these groups of persons with HIV. I have a specific research interest in Asians and Asian-Americans, my ethnic group among these groups. Employing systems perspectives and bio-psycho-social approaches, I will seek to describe the dynamics involved in the Fo forming Ramtin of a dyad and the influence of gender-determined roles and develop an enhanced awareness of the use of self in the application of interventions. I intend to pay special attention to those factors that impact on my clients due to discrimination, poverty, homophobia, and socially constructed barriers to the whole exercise of their freedoms. Along with Neuroscience and Epigenetics, I am well-versed in Polyvagal Theory, Mindfulness, Contemporary Psychodynamic Approaches, Couples Therapy and Sex Therapy, and Psychopharmacology. I seek to creatively access and describe ethical and legal dilemmas for the social worker in mental health. I see myself as an advocate and a practitioner of culturally competent mental health treatment – particularly concerning gender diversity and sexual orientation, with the development of my particular focus on Asians/Pacific Islanders and Asian-Americans. I often find myself reading about competency training for service providers and the role and potential contribution of theories of conflict resolution in the Social Work community. Transportation and urban planning about their effects on mental health and well-being concern me, especially relating to older adults with mental health issues, trauma healing for registered sex offenders, and re-entry programs for new life/work/housing opportunities arrearage are o most extensive engagements. Since coming back to Texas in 2018, I have become increasingly fascinated by comparing different regions of the USA in their regional attitudes, values, beliefs, and delivery systems of mental health services to vulnerable populations – especially on the South and East Coast. This includes the stigma surrounding mental health treatment and psychotropic medication, the criminalization of gender and sexuality, racial/ethnic disparities in accessing appropriate mental health services, particularly for older adults, persons identifying as LGBTQ+ and in need of HIV treatment, and the need to address these disparities through advocacy and provider/agency training in the areas of culturally competent treatment and trauma-informed care. I have faced many challenging situations as a social worker, particularly given that I have developed a particular interest in helping registered sex offenders find employment and housing. During the supervision of the interns, I sometimes faced challenges conveying the precise purpose of our agency meetings and keeping them on topic. It was sometimes difficult to avoid being pulled into cultural explorations that led us far afield from our more immediate concerns. I found it helpful to steer our focus to systems theory and attachment, using Gottman's model, amplifying and expanding its application. After beginning my MSW studies at the University of Texas at Austin, my family and I suffered several setbacks occurring simultaneously. We left me almost incapacitated in their severity, resulting in an unacceptable grade and my being placed on academic probation from Spring 2004 through Spring 2007. It was a struggle to deal with critical family issues at first. Still, in time, they turned into a rapid and profound period of personal growth. I felt like I was undergoing a metamorphosis into an extraordinarily successful professional who could not be more dedicated to her career. During this period, I learned my valid values, formed my mature, adult identity, and built up my integrity and determination, discovering the strength within me. I redeemed myself by attaining solid grades for the Fall 2006 and Spring 2007 semesters through challenging actual work and the power of positive change. I became more resilient, learning to persevere further when faced with adversity. Since then, I have learned how to leverage this resiliency and perseverance to meet new challenges, exemplified by my work, volunteer service, and educational experiences. I recently completed a non-degree, graduate-level Social Work course at Touro College, for which I earned an A, and have increased my volunteering, working up to 10 hours per week. My main priority is honoring my commitment to my education and passion for social work. I am confident that I will successfully meet challenges with enthusiasm and dedication. After resolving some complicated family issues that resulted in my mental health challenges, I am proud to have graduated from NYU's MSW program with a 3.56 GPA. I am proud of how I ultimately dealt most effectively with an abusive relationship and pleased that I was someone who benefitted greatly from the use of psychotropic medications for depression, anxiety, and panic attacks, going into periods that lasted for some time, during which I would upon occasion see my therapist twice a week instead of just once. This experience further solidified my understanding of and passion for the healing potential of counseling and other mental health solutions and resources. If I had been prescribed the medications earlier, I might have been able to have better handled the academic pressure during this especially turbulent period of my life. After responding successfully to these difficulties, I excelled in my new field placement during my last semester of graduate school. I remain in contact with and have a good relationship with that field supervisor, who is also one of my references, providing me with a letter of recommendation supporting my DSW application. I thank you for considering my application to the DSW Program at UXXX. Earning my MSW in 1991, I became a Social Work Officer in the US Army, serving as a clinical social work therapist, clinical director, domestic violence and child abuse treatment center administrator, and behavioral health instructor. In my final assignment, I served as an inpatient alcohol treatment substance abuse counselor until leaving the military in 2004. Subsequently, I was accepted at The Salvation Army College for Officer Training in Chicago, IL., with appointments as a pastor/Corps Officer, in Omaha, NE, completing an internship at the Adult Rehabilitation Center, Waukegan, IL, and finally serving as administrator for Harbor Light, St Louis, MO. I resigned from The Salvation Army in 2009. While serving as a part-time volunteer under the Chaplain's ministry program at the Missouri Eastern Correctional Center, I earned an MA in Conflict Management from Trinity College of the Bible and Theological Seminary, Evansville, IN. Completing my first year Social Work internship with the MS Society, Santa Clara, CA, my field practicum supervisor, and I conducted home visits with families and individuals with all stages of multiple sclerosis, most still young. Called the “young persons’ disease,” MS is especially devastating and traumatic for family members to lose loved one’s in the prime of life. In my second year, I interned at the Palo Alto VA Medical Center in an Inpatient Research Center for Schizophrenia and Other Mood Disorders. As a Social Work Officer in the US Army for five years, I worked with psychiatrists, psychologists, and paraprofessional counselors, providing counseling and mental health care for soldiers and their families, including group therapy for small groups of soldiers who had been involved in domestic violence incidents and were mandated to receive treatment by their commanders. Soldiers involved in incidents were usually ordinary people, part of young couples with children struggling to make ends meet, many on food stamps, and the soldier-parent absent for weeks to months. Few qualified to live on a military installation, and few had any stable support network or base. I often worked closely with military chaplains to provide battalion-wide seminars designed to equip young military spouses with the necessary interpersonal relationship skills and community resources for coping more effectively with the stressors of military life. Provided consultation to soldiers’ leaders to ensure their chain of command supported therapeutic efforts. Consulting with unit leadership was essential to ensuring that the soldier’s immediate and long-term mental and emotional health needs were effectively addressed. The risk of serious physical injury was always factored in during field training exercises. Whether deployed in field training exercises on the military installation or in combat environments, emergency medical assets and mental health providers were attached to these units to provide timely care for soldiers adversely affected by severe training accidents, sometimes resulting in death and others in need of mental health care. I participated in basic and advanced Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) training workshops that Dr. Jeffery Mitchell facilitated. During the early-mid 1990s, CISD training was essential to facilitate debriefings with soldiers and first responders following traumatic training accidents resulting in severe injuries and death to prevent or mitigate the potential of post-traumatic stress. Conducting CIS debriefings helped prepare me to respond to a mass casualty in Sinai, Egypt, providing CISD to soldiers and first responders who witnessed a bus flip over with many dead and injured. As Chief of Social Work Services at a central military installation, I provided supervision of administrative and clinical staff. Our primary mission: provide 24/7 emergency assessment and treatment of families affected by domestic violence, physical/sexual abuse, and neglect of children. I coordinated responses with emergency room health care providers and military and local law enforcement. I provided group therapy to perpetrators of domestic violence, holding weekly multidisciplinary committee meetings to address incidents of domestic violence and child abuse and neglect. I coordinated in-service training with local academic experts from local universities on domestic violence and clinical social workers and mental health staff. While serving as an instructor in the Department of Behavior Health at the U.S. Army Medical Department Center & School (AMEDD C&S) in San Antonio, Texas, I researched and developed classes on combat stress control, presenting two posters about U.S. forces deployed to Sinai, Egypt. I supported the American Red Cross mental health disaster response following the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake and the 1998 flood in south Texas. While in graduate school, I provided training support to Red Cross volunteers who assessed earthquake damage to homes and communities and first responders who extracted victims and survivors of the Cypress Bridge collapse in Oakland, CA. In 1998, I and several other mental health officers/instructors from the Academy of Health Sciences in San Antonio provided crisis counseling to survivors of the devastation of the La Victoria River that flooded a community in a border town adjacent to Mexico. Because I spoke Spanish, I could interact therapeutically with some flooding victims who suffered the death of loved ones. During my final two years on active duty in South Korea, I served as a substance abuse counselor at a six-week inpatient treatment facility for military service members. The counseling staff conducted individual and group treatment sessions with service members of all ranks and provided psychoeducation on various aspects of addiction. I learned a lot about alcoholism and the cycle of addiction. Forming relationships with these soldiers who were beginning their recovery helped bring closure to my father’s alcoholism during my formative and adolescent years. In 2004, after 24 years, I retired as an officer from the US Army and began my studies at The Salvation Army College for Officer Training, Chicago, IL. Following my ordination in 2006, I was assigned to North Omaha, Nebraska, where I served as a pastor, coordinating an adult feeding program and an afterschool recreation and feeding program for young children. The church and community had not recovered from riots that left burned and gutted-out grocery stores and abandoned businesses still standing after 40 years. At the time, North Omaha was among the most poverty-stricken communities in the United States. High School graduation was only 40%, and the Bloods and the Crips had frequent gun battles nearby. We collaborated with staff from the regional Salvation Army Headquarters to obtain funding from the Mutual of Omaha and other regional banks to transform the North Omaha Corps church and community center into state-of-the-art worship, educational, and recreational center complete with a cafeteria 2008-2009. I was assigned to the Harbor Light Center as an administrator of a 160-bed residential treatment center that provided individual and group addiction counseling, life skills to function in society, and training and job application assistance to gain employment after. The Harbor Light staff consisted of addiction counselors, food/kitchen services, security personnel, nursing, and physicians. Since resigning from the Salvation Army in July 2009, I began volunteering at the Missouri Eastern Correctional Center (MECC), where I served as a co-leader during worship services. I also taught state-mandated anger management classes. To say that I learned a lot about myself would be an understatement. While at MECC, I earned a second master's degree in Conflict Management. Military and former military and prison populations are my central focus. I am researching trauma's effects on military personnel and developing relationships with emotional support animal companions (dogs, horses, etc.) concerning their potential for psycho-emotional healing. There is little evidence-based research that has been done in this critical area. I look forward to working collaboratively with non-profit agencies that assist men being released from incarceration with their transition to their respective communities. I am interested in researching the impact of trauma before, during, and after their release from detention and the challenges they experience re-integrating with their families. Another research focus is the impact of trauma on families and the challenges they encounter. At the same time, their father/mother/husband/wife was incarcerated during the reintegration process, and how individual and familial ethnic and cultural factors influence the effects of trauma. - MA Higher Education, Student Affairs Personal Purpose
I hope to attend the full-time Master of Arts in Higher Education and Student Affairs Program at XXXX University. I have nine years of experience teaching English to international students. This international working experience, I believe, has exposed me to the various social, cultural, and academic challenges that young international students might face when they study at Western universities. My own experiences of quickly and pleasantly adjusting to various unfamiliar cultures have provided me with multiple insights that I believe equip me to assist others in doing the same. I was born in Ecuador and moved to the US when I was fourteen. I am fully fluent in Spanish and English, have achieved intermediate-level Portuguese fluency, and am progressing in Mandarin. I have lived and worked in several countries and visited twenty-five in total. I have happily worked, studied, and socialized with people of many social and cultural backgrounds. I consider myself exceptionally culturally aware, having observed various behaviors and attitudes, challenged preconceived assumptions, and learned to be sensitive to and understand others’ boundaries, cultural norms, and perspectives. I was on the corporate ladder and anticipating a predictable future and advancement in that working environment when I worked for Turner Broadcasting Systems in Atlanta. In February of 2007, however, I was involved in a minor car accident which caused me to re-examine my life and career goals; I decided to live a more fulfilling life now rather than putting it off until retirement. So, in December of that year, I traveled to Brazil and volunteered to teach English to high school and college-aged students at the local community center of a small fishing village northeast of the country. I worked there for around a month, thoroughly enjoying the experience, and feeling like I had discovered a vocational calling. I returned home to Atlanta and my job at Turner Broadcasting but felt restless and eager to return to teaching and living abroad. However, I did not immediately pursue this because of the 2008 economic recession. I waited for two more years. In June 2010, I accepted a post as an English teacher in Busan, South Korea, with the Wall Street English Institute, which has various international training centers. In Busan, I acquired a basic but solid foundation in various language teaching techniques and lesson planning, and my students ranged from high school students to corporate professionals. I immensely enjoyed the job and the opportunity to live in a new and fascinating culture. While there, I met a fellow American teacher who encouraged me to seek the Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) qualification. In the summer of 2011, I traveled to Chicago. I pursued a TEFL course during which I was exposed to various teaching theories, classroom management techniques, and hands-on teaching experience for international students at a local community center. After being professionally certified as a TEFL Instructor, I began teaching English at two private colleges in Guangzhou, China, where I taught first- and second-year English. Although the college provided materials, we were allowed some latitude in the choice of activities and materials, which enabled me to compare their relative usefulness. My current teaching position is teaching English Language Arts at a private international high school. I have been teaching ELA to high school students planning to study abroad for the past five years; through this class, students develop competency in English usage and mechanics and oral and written communication through classical and contemporary literature. Most importantly, I highly encourage my students to use analytical and critical thinking skills in all their assignments while examining the various literary forms we discuss in class. I am aware of various research findings into the problems encountered by Chinese students in America and those of their teachers. The researchers have identified various significant issues. Many arrive with a level of English language fluency that is insufficient for academic purposes, this is exacerbated by the fact that there are so many other Chinese students that they can have a full social life without engaging much with native English speakers. This is highly detrimental to their progress toward fluency. They have also noted a marked difference in how students are taught in China and the West. In China, students are expected to absorb the information given to them. By contrast, in Western universities, in many disciplines, the student is expected to develop and provide his own opinions and insights, backed by evidence, about the information provided to them. This contrast confuses Chinese students, who need to be taught to think critically and express opinions. US-based research into these and similar issues continues. My interest in this graduate program at the University of XXXX was further aroused when I came across a video news package on YouTube that CNN had produced in 2015 for their “Great American Stories” documentary series. The title of this news package was “From China to Iowa.” I used this video in one of my “American Culture” classes that I was teaching to Chinese high school seniors in Beijing that were planning to study abroad at different American universities. CNN highlighted the cultural and linguistic difficulties explicitly faced by the many Chinese students studying at the University of Iowa and the university’s attempts and programs to overcome them. My aim in joining the program is to acquire the skills and knowledge that will enable me to assist students from around the world to achieve their potential academically, participate in student affairs programs and events, interact with a diverse group of students, and be part of other appropriate and fulfilling extra-curricular activities that will aid them in maturing socially and to get hands-on-experience in leadership roles and to work as part of a team, skills that they will almost certainly utilize in their future careers. I am confident that the variety and length of my teaching experiences and the significant exposure to the cultures and challenges that students face, Thank you for considering my application. - MS Robotics, CS, EE, ME Personal Purpose Statement
I feel enormously privileged to devote myself to research in Robotics, especially given my passion for data-driven control theory and optimization problems for nonlinear dynamic models. For a variety of reasons, the University of XXXX is my first choice among master's degree programs in Applied Mathematics with a focus on Robotics; most of all, the sheer excellence of your program and its interdisciplinary, research-driven environment. I appreciate how XXXX serves as one of the world's principal centers of creativity in Robotics development. For me, Robotics represents the fullest interdisciplinary fruition and technological advancement in my three principal areas of study that stand as pillars of my academic background and springboard for my future success: Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. I see Applied Mathematics as the principal foundation of all of these areas. I appreciate how recent developments in computing power, machine learning techniques, and the exponential increase of data require increasingly advanced approaches to data management to take full advantage of the potential for Robotics, particularly concerning the data-driven control of dynamic systems. I entered college with a great interest in Robotics as a mechanical engineering major. By my third year of college, I took upper-level courses in mechanical engineering, such as Dynamics and Automatic Control. I became deeply immersed in and engaged with Control Theory. I came to better appreciate the foundational importance of advanced mathematics by taking classes in complex variables, dynamical systems, and numerical analysis. Thus, I increasingly came to see Mathematics as the key to future success in Robotics; I, therefore, changed my major from Mechanical Engineering to Mathematics. In the second semester of my junior year, I joined the team at the Mechatronics, Control, and Robotics Laboratory under the supervision of Professor XXXX. When I first joined the lab, I began learning about Robot Operating systems (ROS) to manipulate robotic arms and realized I had found my calling. Although I had taken an introductory programming class, it was the first time I gained hands-on experience in computer systems. Later, I started building humanoid robots from scratch alongside one of the doctoral candidates I met in the lab. One of my most important tasks was optimizing the Foot Pressure Sensor and Inertial Measurement Unit using the Kalman filter to neglect noise. When we finished building the physical model, we started making the control model using Linear Quadratic Regulator with a linearized inverted pendulum. Next, I began implementing the nonlinear Model Predictive Model method. Currently, I am collecting data from the real world and simulation to predict the falls of the robot while walking with computer vision. Underactuated robotics help us to understand the system better, leading to more energy-efficient control using the entire body dynamic. In Lie groups, dealing with rigid body motion in robotics is often represented in standard three-dimensional Euclidean space. Robots now have high degrees of freedom, the dimensions of such systems are exceedingly high, and a sparse nonlinear optimization technique is crucial to solving problems. My experience in the Robotics lab has convinced me that I have made the right decision, devoting my life to robotics research as it is in this area of study and technological advancement where I will be able to make my most total and most sustainable contribution to the global society and the many challenges that we face. As I learned increasingly about your program and became convinced that the University of XXXX would provide me with the first step toward pursuing my dreams and allow me to become most successful at learning. The research projects at The Movement Control Laboratory of Professor XXXX, such as the development of software MuJoCo and a wide range of research areas, including Professor XXXX’s dimensionality reduction and data analysis technique for complex systems, are most attractive. I do not doubt that the excellent faculties, laboratory facilities, and curriculum offered at the University of XXXX would provide me with a positive experience and become an effective synergist for pursuing my dreams. I am confident that I have the potential to excel. I look forward to attending a supportive institution that will provide me with an environment where I can fulfill my potential. Thank you for considering my application. MS Robotics, CS, EE, ME Personal Purpose Statement #applied #mathematics #robotics #computersciene #EE #ME #personalstatement #purpose
- Real Estate Development Masters Personal Purpose
It would be a special honor for me to attend the master's degree program in Real Estate Development at XXXX University. I will most definitely participate if selected for your distinguished and competitive program. It is not just the NYC location, with all the cultural, professional, and academic resources of the financial capital of the world, but the multidisciplinary character of your program, drawing upon art, business, and law, with global, holistic, and innovative perspectives on urban planning. I hope to become a successful, ‘human-centered’ leader with a vision for real estate development that results in the greater good of the community. Empathy and compassion for residents and developers need to translate into the creation of improved lifestyles, driving my keen interest in policymaking in real estate investment, particularly concerning China. I grew up witnessing the rapid and complex changes taking place over my life growing up in China amidst unprecedented development in real estate. My mother was a single mom and a successful real estate agent whose life was hard. As the minor child of an absent mom, I learned how healthy families require economic stability in China and a dignified home. As a real estate and finance professional, the loneliness of my childhood and the struggle that my mother had to endure has been transformed into a more general passion for urban planning in China that seeks to address the social and psychological needs of families. have been transformed into a broader force for urban planning in China that aims to address families' social and psychological needs Hundreds of millions of children in my country only see their parents briefly at Christmas time. Even if strides were made today to gradually restructure the economy and the development of cities and industry in such a way as to honor families – thereby keeping the future – this issue would still take multiple generations to resolve adequately. Since I hope to do extensive research on this issue as a graduate student, I feel that I am the best fit for the MRED program at Columbia, the program that I see not only as the most interdisciplinary but also the most global in perspective and mission, and the most humane in the sense of respect for fundamental human rights in the liberal tradition. Communication as a second major helped me better understand the strategies driving mass media and their effects on consumers producers, and approaches to understanding people’s needs more generally. In the US alone since I was fourteen, traveling back and forth from China, I have observed many different city planning strategies, especially in China. In my junior year, I attained a full-time internship with the City of Hartford Department of Development and Services in the planning and zoning division, engaging in multiple, large-scale projects such as Parkville Food Market, the Hartford Shared Electric Bike Project, Bartholomew Avenue Streetscape as well as the I-84 highway reconstruction grand plan. At XXXX, I want to design real estate that promotes family cohesion and the community's well-being in sustainable ways. - PHD EECS, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science
I was raised in a small village in India by parents who had not benefited from much education. Educating girls was not a priority in my culture, and it took great determination and hard work to achieve what I had. Early on, it was clear that I had a natural facility for dealing with numbers, which quickly developed into a passion for mathematics and, subsequently, computer science. I have never regretted choosing such a fascinating field where many rapid and exciting advances are made. I was awarded my bachelor's degree in I.T. at the prestigious Jaypee Institute of Information Technology. I was awarded an Indian Army ‘Bright Student Scholarship’, my father being an Indian Army veteran. I earned my master's in computer science at the University of Massachusetts, graduating with a creditable GPA of 3.77. My undergraduate studies centered on mathematics: Calculus, Applied Linear Algebra, Numerical Optimization, and Probability. In my senior year, I worked on developing a ‘Military Simulator’ as my ‘capstone project.’ This was prompted by an interest in military matters arising from my father’s career as a soldier. This project was designed in Unity 3D and involved data extraction from designed simulation systems. I also applied Data Mining techniques to predict the probable outcome of certain events and published two Journal Research papers at IJCA and IJCSIT. These experiences fired my interest in research, which I now passionately hope to pursue within the program. My internship was spent working under the supervision of Professor XXXX of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research. During this time, I explored the applications of Tropical Geometry and completed a project on the formation and simulation of phylogenetic trees using hamming distance. To gain practical experience, after my graduation in June 2014, I joined SAP Labs as a Software Engineer in the S/4HANA suite. I handled the development and deployment of a Product Lifestyle Management application. I then decided to enhance my skills and knowledge in Machine Learning by pursuing a relevant master's program, which led to my joining the Computer Science program at the University of Massachusetts. During my time at UMass, I focused on Data Science and enrolled in courses: Machine Learning, Algorithms for Data Science, Computer Vision, Neural Networks, etc. To explore my domain interest in Machine Learning, I initially decided to work on an NLP-based research project, ‘Concept/Theme Generation,’ under Professor Andrew McCallum’s supervision. After exploring NLP, I focused on computer vision research topics such as Capsule Networks, One-Shot Learning, and Video Summarization. My work on One-Shot Learning involved improving Siamese Networks Architecture embedding learning using Kernel Functions. It was accepted at NeurIPS’18 Workshop as Poster Presentation and will be published in Springer AISC’20 proceedings. At the same time, my work on Video Summarization using keyframe extraction methods has been widely appreciated on GitHub and was a trending paper on ax iv. I have also worked on the Multi-Arm Bandit problem besides computer vision under Professor XXXX's guidance. This involved designing an algorithm to find a Supremum (Lower upper bound) on an unknown data sample compared to the Central-Limit theorem. For my internship, I worked at Autodesk as a Machine Learning Intern and explored practical aspects of AI. I worked on Revit, modeling software for architects, and improved the recommendation algorithm by modeling a probabilistic graph that traverses using the Bayesian approach. This internship helped me understand one of the practical aspects of AI and the potentially significant effects and potential of machine learning on business success. Since being awarded my master's degree, I have acquired valuable and relevant experience. I worked for eight months as a Machine Learning Engineer on various vision-related projects. I have also worked under the guidance of Dr. XXXX at the Brain Injury Outcomes Lab at John Hopkins on a Brain Injury Segmentation project, during which I was exposed to applications relating to Computer Vision and Machine Learning in the healthcare domain. My interest in this field led me to work with Bayer on CTEPH classification cases using lung scans. I became aware of the limitations of AI in healthcare due to data constraints but decided to explore fields other than Computer Vision and initiated a project with UMass IESL on ‘Disease Progression Using Clinical Observations’ in which we experimented with time-series models to predict Sepsis progression using ECG data. I am the author of a book, ' Hands-on One-Shot Learning’, which is due for publication in February. The book summarizes the latest ‘one-shot’ learning methods in Deep Learning and Probability, and I am confident that it will be helpful to many in the field. My current goals are to acquire the considerable skills, knowledge, and experience that the program will provide to maximize my utility, undertake research related to solving practical problems that will benefit many, and pass on my passion to others. I feel privileged to work in a field that affects, and can improve, many aspects of people’s lives. However, I am also alive to the ethical considerations and dilemmas that may sometimes be faced in using AI. My research interests relate to Computer Vision and Machine Learning . I should be particularly interested in pursuing a project on training a machine to undertake computer vision tasks in a low-data regime with medical applications. I know this will not always be possible, and that classification has been well explored. Still, there is significant potential in object detection and segmentation. I am aware that successful research is born of original, critical, and creative thinking together with determination. I know these are unique characteristics, but I feel confident that my academic and practical background assures that I possess them and have the potential to develop and enhance them further within the program and in my future work. I am especially attracted to the EECS Ph.D. Program at XXXX because of its prestigious faculty, its success, reputation in the field, impressive research facilities, and assurance that I shall be among other equally enthused students in this area of study. I believe that my academic and practical background will provide a firm basis for me to excel rather than merely succeed in the program and my career beyond. If selected, I can assure the reader of committed, enthusiastic, and diligent participation in the program.
