Remarkably, this method had never been applied in our field before, making our findings both pioneering and invaluable.


Among the themes that emerged, the diseases applicants mentioned were of primary interest. Neurological disorders like stroke, epilepsy, and major conditions are prominently featured in their narratives. While this was expected, an amusing revelation surfaced: carpal tunnel, a condition commonly associated with neurology, was barely mentioned. This contrast highlighted students' preference for the more complex neurological disorders, underscoring their desire for intellectual challenges.


Beyond the diseases, applicants painted a multifaceted picture of their motivations. A remarkable fascination with research and the burgeoning advancements in neuroscience became evident. The potential for groundbreaking discoveries in the field appeared to captivate their imaginations and fuel their aspirations. Moreover, the empathetic nature of neurologists, who form deep connections with patients and prioritize their quality of life, resonated strongly with many applicants. Personal and family experiences with neurologic diseases also emerged as a potent driving force behind their interest in joining the field.


In their personal statements, certain influential figures captured the imagination of aspiring neurologists. Sherlock Holmes, the emblematic detective known for his deductive reasoning and mastery in solving diagnostic mysteries, featured prominently as an inspiring figure. This association exemplified students' attraction to the puzzle-solving aspect of neurology.


Notably, we observed distinct trends in the motivations of male and female applicants. While both groups shared interests in stroke and the intricacies of the brain, female applicants tended to emphasize the personal aspects of the field, often mentioning family and relatives affected by neurologic diseases. Conversely, male applicants exhibited a stronger inclination towards discussing technological aspects, such as EEG and imaging. While these differences may perpetuate some gender stereotypes, our commitment to data-driven research allows us to explore these nuances further.


One individual's name stood out significantly in the personal statements—Oliver Sacks. The enduring influence of this visionary neurologist became evident, inspiring a considerable number of applicants to choose a career in neurology. Oliver Sacks' legacy as a brilliant mind and a master storyteller undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the medical community and continues to ignite a passion for the field.


Our education research project has cast a revealing light on the diverse and compelling motivations that lead students to become neurologists.
