- Pediatric Medicine Residency Personal Statement
I was asthmatic from the age of five and was hospitalized several times. I observed the world and the adults in it as only a child can. I could see that some doctors and nurses did their job but no more, they cared for the other children and me, but other staff also clearly cared about me and my family. I decided early in life that I would be a doctor and, more importantly, that I would be the type of doctor who genuinely cares about his patients and their families. I was trained in nuclear medicine in my native China, but particularly enjoyed my rotation in Pediatrics. Because of my own childhood experiences, I found that I could relate easily to child patients and their families and have always enjoyed the company of children. When I moved to North America, I decided that I wanted a more ‘hands-on’ type of work than nuclear medicine and became a Public Health Inspector. I worked in this role for six years. I enjoyed my job, but several events during this time re-fired an interest in pediatrics as I became aware of the abuse, neglect, and healthcare problems of children living in remote and underserved communities. I had been called to investigate an overflow of garbage at a property. I stepped into a small bungalow in a remote community to a combined smell of mold and feces and the sound of children playing. I followed the voices to find a girl of about five and a boy of about two playing with toys next to a pile of dog feces; their mother lay incapacitated on a nearby dingy couch. The children’s pale faces showed signs of malnutrition. This was a formative event in my life, and I decided that I would seek to help such children as these by qualifying as a pediatrician. My experiences have fired my passion for proactive, preventative intervention in child welfare and healthcare and for becoming an effective advocate for community health, especially children. I hope to eventually become a pediatrician working in a remote and underserved community. I feel strongly that my background in health inspection work has given me an excellent basis to be effective in such a role. I know that a sick, dependent, and vulnerable little patient with parents wearing anxiety-filled faces provides a uniquely heart-rending scene and calls for unique characteristics in a physician. I also know that not everyone can handle the substantial emotional component of treating sick children. I have considered these extraordinary demands carefully. Having done so, I am sure I can be an influential pediatrician, and I cannot see a better way to live my life than doing so. I hope to be able to assist in research and believe that I have the determination, focus, and intellectual curiosity to enable me to do so effectively. I would be particularly interested in research on the adverse psychological effects on children of long-term ill-health/hospitalization and ways of alleviating such effects. I am aware that cultural sensitivity is essential in medicine. I have happily studied and worked with people of many cultural and social backgrounds. I look forward to extending these experiences in the program. I also possess a well-developed sense of humor and a sense of fun that appeals to children. I know that this specialty attracts many well-qualified applicants. However, I am an exceptional candidate. I have diverse experience that will enable me to contribute to the program; I enjoy teamwork and passing on my knowledge and skills to others; my main recommendation is a genuine and deeply held desire to acquire the additional skills and expertise to treat children expertly and to advance child healthcare, ultimately as a pediatrician in underserved communities. - Family Medicine Residency Personal Statement
I was born in Pakistan, where human misery is evident even to a small child, and I found myself affected by the suffering I saw around me. I was determined at an early age, therefore, to spend my life helping those who suffer. I regard my decision to be a physician to be a vocation rather than a mere career choice. I achieved the highest scores in Pediatrics and Obstetrics in my year and regard these achievements as relevant to my application. A positive family environment is the foundation of healthy children, and this effect is cumulative over generations. Consequently, I have decided to maximize my effectiveness as a physician by pursuing Family Medicine. I have become even more convinced of this choice since the birth of my child three years ago. I have carefully considered the characteristics required of an excellent Family Medicine practitioner, and I possess them. I understand that a ‘holistic’ approach is needed, being sensitive to emotional and physical symptoms and calling for a genuine interest in the patient’s family background and social and work environments with high-order diagnostic skills. The specialty also demands a high degree of sensitivity, patience, cultural awareness, and empathy that I possess. I am also extremely interested in preventative and proactive interventions to promote good health. I have become susceptible to non-verbal signals during consultations and see this as particularly important in Family Medicine. I am widely traveled and have been exposed to people of many cultural and social backgrounds and can relate easily with them. I also possess a highly developed sense of humor. I am extremely interested in assisting with research, and my particular interest is in the prevention and treatment of pediatric diabetes. I have the traits of determination and curiosity that will enable me to succeed in research. I know there will be many well-qualified applicants for this famous specialty, but I am an exceptional candidate. I have an excellent academic record; I am multi-lingual; I have the necessary personal traits for this specialty, but my main recommendation is my passionate determination to become a highly effective Family Medicine practitioner. I am an Iraqi doctor born in the Czech Republic and raised in Iraq and Yemen. I completed medical school in Yemen. Now 30 years old, I live in Salt Lake City, Utah. My friends and co-workers compliment me on my loving disposition and demeanor. I am a caring and sympathetic physician and would like to be considered for your residency program in internal medicine. I look forward to contributing to the diversity of your highly esteemed healthcare institution. I am especially interested in doing research in the areas of both cancer and infectious diseases, particularly AIDS/HIV. I want to continue to devote my professional life to practicing and perfecting my capacity as a physician in Internal Medicine. My long-term goal is not only to practice internal medicine but also to have the privilege of contributing to research in this area. I have more than three years of training in hospitals, in addition to fulfilling a one-year internship. My experience has been with a highly diverse community of patients. Throughout my professional experience, I have worked hard to excel and constantly improve my communication skills, performing comprehensive physical examinations and diagnostic tests. I work well under stress and feel at my best when handling acute emergencies, especially in pediatrics, surgery, and Ob/Gyn. While I profoundly appreciate all my rotations, I especially enjoyed the opportunity to complete courses in Intensive Care and Coronary Care. Since the beginning of 2008, I have been living in Salt Lake City, Utah, and working diligently to gain more considerable experience in medicine and public health. At the same time, I have labored to perfect my English and bring it up to the point that I am now completely comfortable with fully practicing medicine in English. I particularly enjoyed working on behalf of refugees as a Health Navigator at the XXXX Clinic from May through October 2010. I was responsible for scheduling medical appointments and coordinating between the clinic and resettlement agencies. I especially enjoyed following up with the refugees and the agencies that sponsored them, referring patients to specialists, serving as a translator for speakers of Arabic, and helping patients to understand their medication and how it will help them. At XXXX Home, from October 2009 until today, I have been employed as a Case Manager. I help homeless people to find assistance: housing programs, food stamps, Medicaid, Social Security Disability, etc. From February to June of 2009, I served as a case manager for Catholic Community Services. In this position, I helped to resettle more than ten refugee cases per month, helping with everything from school registration to seeking assistance through the Department of Workforce Services. These professional and volunteer activities in Utah have brought me into contact with many doctors in several areas, most prominently Internal Medicine. Most of these doctors treated the refugees I work with on a volunteer basis, and I have been most favorably impressed with their generosity and devotion. I feel like I have a great deal to offer to a residency program that wants to include an Internist that is fluent in Arabic and trained in dealing with Arabic-speaking patients. I look forward to helping patients of all ages, children, young people, and the elderly. Being selected for your residency program in internal medicine will enable me to fulfill my longstanding dream of practicing medicine in the United States and becoming the most influential physician possible. It is a true joy for me to manage the care of Arabic speakers in their native language since many have difficulty communicating their health concerns in English. - MBA Healthcare Personal Statement
Business Administration at XXXX University (XXU) has everything I am looking for in an MBA program, especially a thorough treatment of healthcare as an integral part of the curriculum. I have what the university is looking for in an incoming graduate student, am well prepared to embark upon a rigorous program of study. I am highly motivated with career goals that are a good match for what the university offers. I am finishing my BS in Biological Sciences in preparation for a healthcare career at XXU, and I could not be happier and more comfortable with my academic community. It is at FAU where I could best excel as a graduate student. I entered college thinking of a healthcare career, unsure of what area I wanted to pursue. My Minor in Health Administration helped me better understand the direction of my professional calling and the contribution I want to make. By my third year of studies, I had fallen in love with everything about administration, which I attribute to having been gifted with a tidy, well-managed mind coupled with diligent research related to healthcare. I was frankly quite shocked by the level of passion that I found myself developing quite rapidly for health care administration. I had not expected to see a calling in which I felt so fulfilled, with a growing sense of mission, further fortifying my confidence and capacity. What I find most exciting about becoming a healthcare administration professional is the idea of making regular and significant contributions to healthcare on a systemic level instead of working one-on-one with patients as I would in another area. Having grown up in the world of machine learning, I think in terms of systems, and it is also on this level, as an administrator and communicator, that I seek to make effective use of the expertise in communication and medical technology that I have developed over the last several years. At the same time, I also crave hands-on contact with patients, getting to know them to understand them better. My volunteer experience at Splash Pals further confirmed my passion for leadership and administrative roles in healthcare. As a devoted member of the team for the past two years, I have not only been at the forefront of working with children with developmental disabilities but also interned with this organization as an administrator and outreach coordinator. While I admit that sometimes studying for my classes felt like challenging work, Splash Pals has been a sheer joy; the children, swimming, playing, teaching, and learning – a total immersion experience for all parties involved, most of all me. Working as Dr. XXXX’s research assistant at XXU’s Simulation Center was a particular highlight of my undergraduate period. My primary responsibility was collecting data and comparing results in various simulated programs; this experience will help me excel in the research that awaits me in the MBA Program. I am currently working with Reed Edelman, OD, in his optometric clinic, I am in my senior year at XXXX University; I also serve as a supplemental instructor of Genetics. Operating in a clinical setting and working as a facility administrator has helped me better understand a patient-centered environment's administrative nuts and bolts. Central to my ambition to serve in leadership roles in the future is the fact that America in general, and American healthcare systems in particular, have seen a great deal of diversification in the professional labor force, with more and more faces of color among doctors, nurses, and across the board, reflecting the way that America has become such a diverse place over the last few decades. My parents are from India, and I am a native speaker of two Indian languages and English. Furthermore, long in love with Southeast Asia, I decided three years ago to adopt a country in that region to make it my own, visiting with frequency in the future, perhaps while I also see our native India. While I have not yet had the opportunity to visit Seoul, I keenly look forward to doing so frequently in the future, especially since I now have the essential communicative ability in Korean. This helps me contribute to appreciating diversity in the American healthcare system. Thank you for considering my application. MBA Healthcare Personal Statement
- Art Education for Children Personal Purpose Statement
I see XXXX University’s master's degree Program in Art Education as the most creative and dynamic program of its kind in the world, where I will be fully immersed in the latest discovery of art education techniques and strategies for empowerment, fully immersed in the celebration of artistic accomplishment worldwide. I plan to give the entire balance of my professional life to the education of children and our future society. I seek to deepen my appreciation of Western Art and broaden my horizons to include global themes and in-depth comparative exploration of the Art of the Orient. As a veteran with decades of civil servant experience and diverse educational experiences, I have something valuable to contribute to the academic community as a graduate student at XU. Although I earned an associate degree many years ago, I only recently finished my BA in Liberal Arts at XXXX University. As an older adult seeking primarily ongoing personal enrichment, I hope to continue this rapid internal growth experience in the master's program at XU focused on Art Education for children. In my youth, I was a soldier stationed at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California. In those days, in the 1970s, I often felt like I was living a double life since I told no one in the counterculture that surrounded me that I worked for the US military. Liking and loving hippies and soldiers characterized my early adulthood alike, which was sometimes a tricky tightrope to walk. I refused to talk to anyone about my military life and ensuing employment at the Defense Language Institute and Naval Postgraduate School, which continued for fourteen more years after discharge. I worked in English as a secretary in the Greek, Romanian, Spanish and Russian Departments. As a covert counterculture person at the time, I now realize that only recently have I been able to fully value and appreciate all that I learned at the Institute over the years. Over these last few years at XU, I have come home , fully immersed in the world that I most love, classes in Western Art, Greek culture, the art of William Morris, and the Pre-Raphaelites of the 19th century, etc. saturating my senses. The MA in Art Education is the way for me to continue to explore culture and history as well as Art and Education, enriching my creativity and understanding of the world around me. Studying Liberal Arts has allowed me to delve deeper into the meaning and possibilities of art. Most of my relevant studies have focused primarily on Western art; my professors also introduced my classmates and me to many Eastern artists, however, and their methods of expression, which helped open my mind to the vastness of the art world and its immense potential . My university education and professional experiences thus far have provided me with a solid foundation for graduate-level study of the evolution and impact of art throughout the globe and its relevance to Art Education. I have most enjoyed the experience of organizing every aspect of an exhibition, inviting guests, designing posters, preparing the presentation, and arranging the opening and closing – for a class project using state-of-the-art software. At the Senior Council, I assisted with a Spanish/English bilingual program for migrant workers' children, including art classes and community art. This experience in the US ¨Salad Bowl¨ set me well on my way to becoming a world citizen and plays a deciding factor in my decision to pursue further studies in Art Education. Thank you for considering my application for graduate study in Art Education at XXXX University. Art Education for Children Personal Purpose Statement
- JD Law, Juris Doctor, Immigration and Public Interest
XXXX School of Law is my first choice among Juris Doctor programs for distinct reasons, especially my admiration of your integral focus on uplifting and protecting the least fortunate among us. This is especially true given my interests in the areas of Immigration and Public Interest Law. I see XXXX as the top choice in NYC. Immigration themes had radiated throughout my life, growing up with a mother from Honduras and an American Mormon father who made sure that I came to an adequate understanding of the early Mormon days when we, too, were migrants in the American West. Both parents taught me to be compassionate, cultivating a sense of civic responsibility that is rooted in the experience of immigration. Half Honduran, and a native speaker of Spanish, I want to put my identity and language skills to work on behalf of Spanish-speaking immigrant populations. I feel this calling, in part, because of the great need that exists in this area. I am drawn to this field of study because of the controversy surrounding immigration to America, particularly concerning our southern border. I look forward to full participation in the furious fray of passionate arguments surrounding the issue. Throughout my graduate and professional studies thus far, I have consistently focused on issues related to immigration law, with particular attention to the rights of undocumented immigrants. XXXX is the ideal location to earn my JD Degree so that I can take full advantage of the presence of the XXXX School of Law's Immigrant and Non-Citizen Rights Clinic (INRC) and participate in the Creating Law Enforcement Accountability & Responsibility (CLEAR) Program. Most specifically, I hope to make essential contributions in the future to explore pressing social justice issues related to the relationship between law and technology: equity and inclusion, privacy, free speech, electronic voting, and consumer rights. I am incredibly excited about the prospect of studying under Professor XXXX at the XXXX School of Law, particularly his course on Technology and Law. I daydream about helping to create and participate in public interest technology law clinics, exploring and developing emergent technologies in such a way as to harness them to the advancement of underrepresented groups. My experiences as a presenter, volunteer, student, teacher, and leader have provided me with the drive, curiosity, and dedication necessary to distinguish myself in a rigorous program such as the XXXX School of Law. Currently earning a certificate in Immigration Law, I have enjoyed learning to analyze immigration issues and assess legal status and options. My experiences have confirmed my longstanding belief in the importance of public service to the vulnerable members of one’s society. I seek to become an empathetic, socially aware champion through the dogged pursuit of a career in Immigration and Public Interest Law. Growing up in a household filled with stories of my mother's childhood in Honduras, many if not most stories of hardship, I could not escape the contrast to my own life. I will never forget the look in my mother’s eyes as she explained several times how it was a luxury to feed a pet as she grew up in Honduras. I always felt grateful for the stack of baleadas on the dinner table, with a 2-foot white statue of Jesus Christ watching from the corner of the room. On my father’s side, my identity was grounded in the Rocky Mountains, where I grew up, close to God, in Utah. I thrived on stories of the Mormon community and history, tales of immigration, poverty, hardship, oppression, and violence. Complicated stories of love of country mixed with tragedy and triumph have always surrounded me. My Mormon origins help me better understand the complexity of diversity and adversity, justice and injustice, and the importance of service within my community. As an undergraduate majoring in International Studies, I was thrilled to explore a variety of new cultures and their religions and learn to think comparatively, as a social scientist, to better understand the world around me as a product of human history. I have supported myself throughout my education by working in IT, for Apple. I parted ways with Apple looking to, in the words of the late great Steve Jobs, find my way to "ding the universe." I plan to use what I have learned in IT, especially artificial intelligence, to help immigrants learn about their legal issues and how to resolve them best, educate them about their rights, and work towards overcoming their legal challenges. I have volunteered at many advocacy and support organizations dedicated to everything from equal access and high-quality education to bail reform. However, I feel I have come home professionally at XXXX Citizenship Now! a citizenship immigration law service. As an application assistant, I sit with legal permanent residents and aid them in filling out their applications for naturalization. We talk about their lives, and I listen to their stories. When they are hesitant to open up to a stranger, I mention that I am the son of an immigrant and that my mother is Honduran. Without fail, they look at me in disbelief that this white, six-foot, blonde, blue-eyed man has a Honduran mother. I show them a family picture, and they always smile. The only thing missing is a stack of baleadas . Thank you for considering my application to XXXX Law.
- Fellowship Clinical Nutrition Personal Statement
Born and raised in Baghdad, Iraq, where I also completed medical school, I am thankful that I could spend an extended time growing up in Libya and the UAE, enhancing my appreciation for diversity. Now a US citizen and a faculty at LAC-USC Medical Center, working on the front lines of the battle against COVID-19, I appreciate how nutrition plays a vital role in boosting our immunity. The most common health problems arise from a root cause of obesity, which goes back to unhealthy food choices. As a healthcare professional, I find myself responsible and committed to learning evidence-based approaches to accelerate the improvement in the health of our patients. I look forward to joining your fellowship program in clinical nutrition to acquire the unique knowledge and skills I can incorporate into my future practice. Increasingly, throughout my career, I have had a particular interest in treating my patients holistically, and clinical nutrition is central to the practice of holistic medicine. I consider the amount of time spent covering the subject of food in medical school to be insufficient; I hope to contribute in the future to giving nutrition information more prominent in medical school and residency programs. Thus, I look forward to developing my advanced awareness of the importance of nutrition to maintain optimal health. I want to become a leader in this field in the future, providing exemplary teaching guidance to new generations of students. Serving as a teaching faculty for the past five years has enabled me to gain additional skills and expertise in teaching. What I hope to learn in your fellowship program in Clinical Nutrition will complement what I have already learned, enable, and inspire me in my quest for excellence as a teacher, and incorporate vital information about clinical nutrition into our medical school curriculums. I have served as a lead hospitalist in patient safety and a transplant hepatology fellow. This has taught me how to work exceptionally well as a multidisciplinary team member and allowed me to develop my leadership skills, navigating effectively between team members. This skill will enable me to deal with the complexity of caring for patients in obesity medicine with its numerous related comorbidities. My goal during my fellowship is to learn and teach nutrition-centered patient care to help uplift our patients mentally and emotionally. Thank you for considering my application to your competitive fellowship program in clinical nutrition at UX. Fellowship Clinical Nutrition Personal Statement
- MPH Global Public Health Personal Statement
Why MPH: Coming to the USA as a recipient of the USAID scholarship (1990-1994), I earned a BS in Computer Engineering at Penn State University. Being awarded the Brush Fellowship (1994-1995) enabled me to earn the MS at the same institution. I did my Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2002 at the University of Maryland, College Park, and then accepted a position as a senior research scientist in Jersey City, New Jersey. I enjoyed innovative research on facial recognition, working at a leading biometrics company. Riding high on the perks of New York City, I spent hours gazing at my postcard-like view of the Manhattan skyline. Since that time, my concern for social issues, and especially public health has grown. I now want to put my solid foundation in Big Data to work on behalf of the needs of global health campaigns oriented toward helping people and systems in the Developing World. During my graduate study, I served as a teaching assistant for four semesters, discovering that I had a knack for explaining complex concepts in plain language and receiving positive feedback from students. Thus, I decided to become a teacher and a researcher. My first academic position was at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, not long after finishing my Ph.D. Over the next 17 years, I would teach in 5 additional countries, in the Middle East and North Africa. The Covid-19 pandemic is the primary motor of my adoption of the cause of global health as my own, making it the center of my professional identity. During the first few weeks of the first lockdown, I recall being still under the naïve impression that this was all temporary and that we would all go back to our everyday lives soon; after all, we thought, science had progressed so much, and we surely must be able to contain this ‘flu-like’ disease quickly. The next few months would build up into a gradual ‘aha’ realization of how vulnerable we really are. I have an excellent foundation for my efforts on a global scale. The single scariest aspect of this is the way that the emergence of viruses is exacerbated by climate change. I pay special attention to the worst-case scenarios generated by statistical models. Why Global Health Concentration: While I have always felt very strongly about issues of social justice and equality, as I enter middle age, I find myself increasingly motivated by moral concerns, contemplating fundamental questions as to why there is so much poverty and suffering in the world, with an ever-widening gap between the haves and have nots. I am particularly concerned with how this gap is being exacerbated further by the pandemic. After two decades of working to advance communication technology, I now seek to focus my abilities on global health, where I am convinced that I will be able to do the greatest good for the balance of my professional life. I now want to focus on the skills I have developed that are most relevant to international healthcare development and awareness. With more than 20 years of experience in applying machine learning (or what is now more generally called data science ) methods to various problems, I have an excellent foundation for my efforts in Global Public Health. The lives of many, if not most of us, will never be quite the same again after Covid-19. I now realize the complex ways it will take us years to recover from this pandemic's economic, social, and mental health fallout. Just as data has been front and center in many innovative solutions for combatting Covid-19, there is enormous potential for solving many global health problems using data science and AI. I want to be at the forefront of these efforts. I am particularly interested in using data science to study the role of human factors in global health systems – how cultural norms, human behavior, and human action/intervention (or lack thereof) impact the overall quality of community health. A career in international development has been my life-long dream for as long as I can remember. My interest in global health has now come to the forefront of my intellectual world. No one is born racist; racism is learned behavior with racist attitudes creeping into our subconscious from an incredibly early age. In Tunisia, where I grew up, although the population is ethnically homogeneous, systematic racism exists against the less than 1% Black African minority. This is reflected by the fact that the word for a Black or dark-skin person in the Tunisian dialect means “slave.” Preference for light-skinned people is ingrained in white culture. As a child, I never really questioned these social norms. However, being brought up as a Muslim also meant that I was exposed to one of the fundamental premises of Islam which is that all human beings are equal. This helped to serve as a counterbalance to racism, for which I am thankful. As a high school student, I was already quite conscious and curious about equity, social justice, and human rights. Having lived in the US for many years, I have come to embrace the causes of the least fortunate among us, especially the civil rights movement and the black-lives-matter movement. I have read countless books, attended lectures, went to demonstrations to make sense of it all. Some of my favorite books are “Makes Me Wanna Holler” and “Man Child in the Promised Land,” which provided many answers about the Black experience in the US. Indeed, racism can be seen as a public health crisis simply because there can be no health equity if people of different racial/ethnic backgrounds do not have equal access to (opportunities for) quality education, housing, employment, and health care. I am excited that my MPH training at UXX will arm me with the skills and tools to design and implement programs that promote equitable quality health. Why UXX: My first choice among MPH programs is the University of XXXX for several reasons, the humanitarian mission, the emphasis on global perspectives, diversity, and so many extraordinarily talented students from all over the world. I see UNC as the perfect launching pad for my most outstanding, significant professional effort to date, helping to bring the power of b ig data analytics and AI tools to bear on today’s urgent health crises. A well-published professor of Computer Science originally from Tunisia, I have taught in several countries, increasingly focusing on data and its applications. I have also collaborated extensively with the private as well as public sectors. While I have enjoyed my work very much, especially in communication, the COVID-19 pandemic has provoked a thoroughgoing re-evaluation of my professional direction. As a result, I have now decided that I wish to devote my energy to causes related to the advancement of global public health. I want to earn the MPH at UXX so that I can contribute to the prevention of death, working night and day to help my species and our planetary home survive despite enormous challenges. I have the willpower, vision, maturity, and skillset to become a successful global health practitioner, making essential and sustainable contributions to advancing and protecting international human health. I seek to harness the power of my background in data science to the development of a better understanding of the social/behavioral/cultural determinants of health in underserved communities around the world, as this is a key to improving healthcare and health equity and helping policymakers and healthcare providers to make more fully informed decisions. I hope to serve as an international development specialist/consultant working with global organizations and non-profits, such as the UN, World Bank, and Gates Foundation, on global health, food security, and conflict resolution problems . Having grown up in a developing country (Tunisia) and lived in several other developing countries, I have experienced healthcare issues firsthand in the Developing World. I have authored more than twenty research articles published in peer-reviewed publications. I am adept at explaining/presenting complex concepts/information. In addition to lecturing, I have served as a mentor to countless student projects (capstone projects, master's thesis projects) related to data science. In addition to my first (Arabic) and second (English) languages, I am also fluent in French and nearing an intermediate level in Spanish. A long-distance runner, when I am not working, I am running. Thank you for considering my application to Global Public Health at UX. MPH Global Public Health Personal Statement
- LOR, Letter of Recommendation from Professor for MPH
To Whom It May Concern, My name is XXXX, Ph.D., and I am currently employed as an Economist II at Amazon Headquarters, Seattle, Washington (June 2018 - Present). Previously, I served as an Assistant Professor at the Tunis Business School, Tunis, Tunisia (2016 – 2018 I have been a good friend and close colleague of XXXX for several years since our time together as faculty and friends at the same university, she was on the Computer Science faculty as was my brother; I was in Economics. I could not be more convinced that XXXX has much to give to Global Public Health and the distinguished MPH program at XXU, particularly given her love for NYC. I could not recommend XXXX more highly, based on her diligence and most impressive grasp of all things having to do with data and its foundational importance to research – and how thoroughly she is dedicated to creative innovation. I first got to know XXXX regularly in the bi-weekly seminars at my Economics research lab devoted to advanced statistical modeling and analysis at the University of Tunis . XXXX seemed especially interested in our talk series on cross-disciplinary applications of statistics and data science to economics, especially in measuring economic and social inequality and its relevance for issues in distributive justice. Economists tackle poverty in developing countries, how to address the lack of data in Tunisia and other developing nations using advanced data science techniques, etc. Since I was pursuing a degree in Public Law when we became friends, XXXX and I had lengthy discussions about the intersection between law, economics, and data. I was fascinated by her passionate explanations about data science applications in numerous fields, in law enforcement, for example, predictive policing, solving crimes, and measuring the impact of regulation. XXXX’s ambition to achieve a fast-paced career in global health is unrelenting. Given her quantitative background coupled with conscientiousness and curious mind, I am confident that she will represent an essential contribution to your program. I recommend her to you without reservation. If you have any further questions about her background or qualifications, please do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely, LOR, Letter of Recommendation from Professor for MPH
- Student Visa Personal Statement for Canada
To the Visa Officer High Commission of Canada Dear Sir/Madam, My name is XXXX, and I am an Indian citizen applying for a student visa to pursue a master's degree in Canada. I completed my bachelor's degree in business in 2011. I hope to earn my master's in business management and international Business at XXXX College. Toward this end, I sat for the IELTS exam on the 4th of December 2018, earning an overall score of 7.0 (Listening - 6.5, Reading - 6, Writing - 7, Speaking - 8). Born into a Christian family and raised in the south of India, my mother was a schoolteacher who prioritized education. Although she passed away in 2001 in a traffic accident, her spirit will always continue to drive me forward in my quest for excellence in Education. After she left us, I made a vow that I would do everything I could to honor her dreams, hard work, and legacy by going to graduate school and earning an advanced degree in my field, International Business. I see international business collaboration across borders as our best hope for global peace and sustainable development, successfully meeting the many profound challenges humankind faces today. Several years after finishing my undergraduate studies, I am professionally and economically established and can afford to pay for my higher studies. Several years after completing my undergraduate studies, I am professionally and professionally and economically established installed, and I also have the full support of my family. I am thus extremely excited about getting started with my whole immersion experience in finance, business setups, and operations. My father, who I also lost tragically in 2019, was a businessperson, and he will always be my foremost role model, of his sense of responsibility and dedication to innovation. Going on to lose an uncle the following year, 2020, impressed upon me still further the unique character of life and enhanced my drive to go as far as possible, professionally speaking. After finishing my undergraduate studies, I moved to Abu Dhabi (UAE) to work as an accountant between 2012 and 2013. In 2014, I was promoted to ¨Senior Accountant¨. I now have eight looking for constant improvement in my skills, knowledge, and standard of living. - PHD Public Health Personal Purpose in Epidemiology & Biostatistics, Jamaican
Central to my career aspirations is becoming a distinguished epidemiologist, recognized for my hard work and dedication, and making significant contributions to the field of Public Health. Since high school, I excelled in science and math; I decided to earn my bachelor's degree in applied Statistics at the University of Technology in my home country of Jamaica. As an undergraduate student, I spent most of my time analyzing research data, even assisting some Ph.D. students with analysis and the interpretation of findings. For one study that I worked on, for example, by using bivariate analyses and multivariate logistic regression techniques, we examined the extent to which selected independent variables influenced GED outcomes (Pass/Fail) in the USA. Since my graduation, I have assisted more than one hundred graduate and doctoral students with analysis for their research in more than ten countries. Because of my work ethic, critical thinking ability, and research experience, I was also awarded a contract with the government of Jamaica to carry out data analysis on information gathered by Jamaica’s National Family Planning Board. I was hired as a Statistical Analyst and tasked with analyzing national datasets to provide a comprehensive report designed to assist the government in reviewing HIV policy and the area of sexual and reproductive public health. While completing the MPH Program at XXXX College in New York, I felt incredibly honored to be employed as a graduate and research assistant, helping not only with research projects but also assisting students with the statistics needed for their theses, everything from questionnaire design, through data collection, data entry, coding, and analysis. While helping individuals determine the proper methodology for their studies, I developed a passion for research and a keen desire to earn a Ph.D. in my chosen field, Epidemiology, using data to produce actionable results. As a Lead Epidemiologist, I oversee the implementation of evidence-based programs to effectively combat substance use among children 9 to 20 years old; I develop surveillance systems to track substance use trends and plan and direct studies to investigate preventive methods and treatments for diseases. As a team player working with the health department, industry personnel, physicians, and others, I enjoy designing, administering, and evaluating health safety standards and programs to improve public health in Jamaica. I enjoy researching and developing methodologies, instrumentation, and procedures for assessing community health initiatives. I especially hope to study at the University of XXXX in the area of Epidemiology & Biostatistics because I feel that I am the best fit for your program given my interests in health equity, HIV policy and prevention, infectious disease epidemiology, maternal and child health, violence, and addiction, with a particular focus on child health and the social determinants of health. I received a favorable response from Professor XXXX when I contacted her requesting her expertise in working with me during my Ph.D. studies; she was unable to accept but stated that she is willing to serve on the committee when I begin my dissertation process. I look forward to researching asthma and allergy symptoms in children and how these clusters vary based on socio-demographic and environmental characteristics to develop more accurately targeted interventions for handling asthma-related multi-morbidity. Upon completing my Ph.D. studies, I plan to teach and contribute to research and development in Jamaica, focusing on reducing hospitalization rates for childhood asthma. It would be a special honor to gain classroom experience as a Teaching Assistant. Thank you for considering my application to the University of XXXX. PHD Public Health Personal Purpose
- MSc Biostatistics Personal Purpose, Chinese Immigrant to Canada
I imagine myself working as a member of a medical research team in the future as a biostatistician. Most inspired by my readings of several alumni stories in the Biostatistics Program and other departments at the XXXX School of Public Health at the University of XXXX, I realize that I, too, crave this kind of passion, excitement, confidence, and commitment. The joy and expectation that I see in the smiles of the graduates. Hence, I am now applying to study for the MSc Degree in Biostatistics at the XXXX School at the University of XXXX, my first choice for continuing my education. Born and raised in China and coming to Canada at 17, I have been here in Toronto for five years, two years of high school, and three years of university. I am a fourth-year student at the University of Toronto, majoring in Statistics with a minor in mathematics. I will be graduating and obtaining my Honours BS in June of 2021. Throughout the course of my undergraduate studies, I have increasingly become increasingly devoted to my analysis of Statistics. I began reading about it even in my free time. I could not be more dedicated to building a career in applied statistics because I see our field as unlocking the vast potential for a host of other areas. I consider the particularly rigorous and distinguished MSc program at the University of XXXX to be the best jumping-off place to launch my career. Nothing excites me as much as the prospect of collaboration with other medical investigators to address and correct life-threatening issues in Public Health. Designing clinical trials and conducting medical experiments in the lab, I look forward to decades of giving my all to Biostatistics, analyzing data from all perspectives, and unlocking mysteries so that we can better fight the disease in question. Increasingly, I have fallen in love with the subject of statistics throughout my undergraduate studies. I enjoy using data to understand better, especially when iI how things are interconnected. I love it when the data confirms my thinking and especially appreciate it when it corrects it, steering me in the right direction on the right avenue of inquiry. In preparation for graduate school, I took upper-level statistics courses, learning advanced statistical models, including Generalized Linear Model, the Generalized Linear Mixed Model, and Generalized Mixed Additive Model. I completed numerous projects in these courses, which helped me better understand the principal theoretical models driving statistics today. I could not be happier analyzing accurate, recent data and using models taught in class to find interesting results that help me understand the problem accurately, which is close to my intellectual interests. It may be a study of whether a certain kind of group is more likely to get a particular disease than others, for example, eventually using case-control studies, a study of a social problem in a specific demographical area, or a study of factors that affect an event, such, etc. Besides Frequentist methods, I also learned how to do Bayesian analysis using the NLA methodology. I appreciate theoretical statistics as the foundation of applied statistics. Some of the senior academic courses I took include STA347: Probability Theory, STA355: Theory of Statistical Practice, STA447: Stochastic Process, and STA452: Mathematical Statistics. Increasingly, such courses have given me a broad understanding of probability theory and statistics. I feel especially delighted when I see connections between different distributions and how to get one from the other. I learned R and Python mostly on my own, along with SQL, Excel, Tableau, Stata, and SAS. A certified advanced SAS programmer, I also completed an internship in the summer of 2019, fu. I was immersed in SQL for the first several weeks, then watched Tableau lectures and read textbooks about machine learning and statistics. As a certified advanced SAS programmer, I also completed an internship in the summer of 2019, fully immersed in SQL for the first several weeks, then watched Tableau lectures and read One of the textbooks I studied, An Introduction to Statistical Learning with Applications in R, gave me my first extensive taste of classification algorithm algorithms when due to like Linear Discriminant Analysis, K-Nearest Neighbors, and Logistic Regression, increasing my understanding of machine learning and where its fullest potential lies. Most recently, I have been reading a book on Biostatistics named Fundamentals of Biostatistics by Bernard Rosner. I ask for the opportunity to give my life to science for the good of us all in trying times when every soldier is needed on the front lines to keep death at bay and our loved ones safe from disease. I look forward to beginning as an entry-level researcher upon completing your program and spending the balance of my professional life in the laboratory. Your time and consideration are appreciated, and I eagerly await a decision. MSc Biostatistics Personal Purpose
