    A very hard-working Saudi Arabian dentist, I have learned to artfully balance my full-time devotion to dentistry with my family life, thus making the most of both, with my family inspiring and supporting me to excel in dentistry. An expert in time management and multitasking, I am a young woman whose professional goals all involve contributing to an improvement of the health of my community, primarily because of awareness-raising and public education.     My first choice for earning a Ph.D. in Linguistics in America is XXXX University, both for its sheer excellence and the surrounding area's vast intellectual and cultural resources. I look forward to contributing to the diversity of the student body as an Arab woman with a keen, long term-interest in Arabic, its varieties, origins, and relationships with other languages. A Saudi Arabian woman very dedicated to Linguistics, my father took immense pride in his exceptional gift with languages, especially English, passing it on to me while I was growing up. He was my teacher and best friend, spending all the time we could working in various languages. My father’s influence on my choice of Linguistics as a career was foundational, going far beyond English. He also taught me to appreciate the Indigenous languages of our part of the world and study them in-depth, especially Najdi Arabic and the Mehri language, which is my first or native language, alongside Arabic. My central career objective is to conduct linguistic research on Naida Arabic and Mehri languages, especially in phonology. At the same time, I look forward to a professional lifetime of service in academia, training students interested in these areas. I am convinced that the theoretical orientation of the Linguistics Program at XXXX University will provide me with the rigorous training I need to meet my goals. My dad passed away in my senior year, and I was a wreck with grief. Fortunately, I prevented my grades from suffering that much since my studies became my major escape from my sorrow. I am proud to say that I have never received a grade below ‘A’ for any of my classes in Linguistics. My passion and talent in English were noted, and I began teaching English at the university where I studied within two months of graduation, serving as a Junior Lecturer. I taught English skills, introduction to Linguistics, and Phonology. I also won the best translation project prize at Salman bin Abdul-Aziz University. I am earning an MA in English, focusing on Linguistics at XXXX University. I will graduate this coming May 2019 and hope to begin my Ph.D. Program at XXXX University shortly after that. Curious by nature, linguistics is like a puzzle, and I never tire of seeking solutions to mysteries to which I set my mind. Towards the end of my undergraduate studies, I worked on translating a book with a commentary on the translation. Facing up to this challenge was one of my most incredible learning experiences, helping me appreciate the profound depth of the differences between languages and hence the significant challenges involved in an accurate translation. I learned a great deal during this project about the syntax of Arabic and English. I am a native speaker of an endangered language, at least an endangered dialect, the Aljahmi dialect of the Mehri language, in Saudi Arabia. A Semitic language, it is central to my personal or individual mission since my grandfather was determined that we acquire this language to save it. Even though I feel like I am starting to lose it due to lack of practice, I want to reclaim and analyze it syntactically and phonologically. Interestingly, the Megrim language has different words for both instead of having prefixes to determine masculinity and femininity. For example, seven is /bit/ for masculine and /hob/ for feminine. No one has paid attention to the phonological and syntactical analysis of the Mehri language. The Linguistics program at X University will sharpen my research skills and help me learn more about linguistics concerning analyzing a variety of Arabic dialects, most specifically the Aljahmi dialect of the Mehri language, phonologically and syntactically. I need the guidance and the knowledge that I am sure I can only get at XXXX University, especially concerning phonological research. Another research area I have given a lot of energy to is the origin and constitution of the pidgin language. I look forward to studying this issue intensively at XXXX University.     I hope to earn a Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy and devote myself to a professional lifetime searching for, studying, enhancing, and empowering Occupational Therapy interventions and programs. I was inspired to go into Occupational Therapy after seeing how horticulture and organic agriculture can be used to facilitate Occupational Therapy interventions. Agriculture can be a great deal of fun, and individuals enjoy working in nature and engaging in something so basic as food production. I look forward to learning about your OT program's many engaging, fun, meaningful, and practical activities. I find great satisfaction in working with special-needs children, teenagers, and young adults, and I look forward to giving my all to this fields I have already devoted a great deal of time to studying Artificial intelligence, robotics, and automation, which are coming to healthcare and the field of Occupational Therapy. I served as the manager for the organization’s 1-acre urban farm, working with volunteers from the community to grow organic food. I have also volunteered at an alternative high school in Madison, WI. In 2014, I traveled to East Java, Indonesia, to volunteer at a non-profit organization called the Learning Farm for five months, doing organic agriculture and teaching business and life skills (English) to approximately 40 at-risk street youth from around the Indonesian Archipelago. I have a lot of professional experience that relates to occupational therapy. First, I worked as a full-time, live-in, direct care worker with two adult men with developmental disabilities for a year with Options in Community Living in Madison, WI. I helped them with all their activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, grooming, brushing teeth, meal preparation, medication delivery, and more. I also helped them participate in community events like going to a gardening club, bowling, holiday events, and more. I did this type of job a second time, years later, in Bozeman, MT, working in a group home with seven different individuals with developmental disabilities, assisting them with similar things. I also worked at a wilderness therapy program for at-risk teenagers in Hawaii for four years. This was a residential treatment facility for teenagers struggling with mental illness. Students I worked with struggled with depression, anxiety, suicide ideation, self-harm, eating disorders, ADD, autism, etc. This program was unique because it focused partly on using Horticulture Therapy as a treatment option. My role at this organization was first as a direct care staff and then as a supervisor of natural care staff, as well as working 1:1 with students and supporting them in adopting healthy life skills. And I taught them how to grow their own/cook healthy food, work through difficult emotions, communicate effectively, practice vulnerability with their peers, etc. I also helped them practice basic things like brushing their teeth, eating three meals, drinking enough water, and taking medication. Coworkers and supervisors have told me that I am hard-working, patient, humble, calm, easy-going, and easy to have a good relationship with.     Born in Tijuana and spent my childhood there, I came to the USA as a teenager. Now twenty-five and a US citizen, my family is established in the Chula Vista area of Southern California, which has a substantial Spanish-speaking community that I look forward to serving as an Occupational Therapy professional. I hope to be accepted to a Master’s Program in Occupational Therapy at XXXX University to become licensed as an OT in California and give my all every day to helping my community, especially children with various challenges who can benefit significantly from occupational therapy. A firm believer in the great value of OT for children with learning and developmental disabilities, I see this as the best way for me to make the most significant and sustainable contribution possible to my community over the long term - one child in need at a time, most little Latinos, I will communicate in both languages. I assisted with therapeutic activities such as transporting LiteGait, providing patient equipment, and tossing balls during therapeutic exercises. I observed transferring techniques during ADLs and helped stabilize wheelchairs for patient safety. I have also volunteered at OT-ETC, a pediatric rehab home providing physical, occupational, and speech therapy. I came to the US from Mexico when I was 16 years old and obtained citizenship through my father, who became a US citizen after many years as a farmworker in California.     I could not be happier with my choice of career, Occupational Therapy , which I find enormously fulfilling. Each day, I am anxious to get to work to be with the clients and other caregivers, always appreciating their diligence and resiliency. I enjoy the interdisciplinary aspects of OT with careful coordination between speech pathologists, physical therapists/assistants, and OT assistants. I also love the great diversity among our clients. As a student in your program and later as a certified OT professional, I look forward to learning and practicing new and developing approaches to OT, especially aquatic therapy, and equine-inspired approaches. After completing your program and earning my master's degree in OT , I hope to find a position with an organization that encourages and supports ongoing training and the cultivation of further specialization within my field. I have not yet had the opportunity to travel as much as I would like, and I hope to find ways to do so as an OT professional; completing positions overseas in the Developing World is on my agenda. I have two years of experience working with adults, including senior clients, in inpatient and outpatient facilities, utilizing group and individual therapy. I've also worked at a pediatric outpatient facility. I would mostly keep the clients on task, completing fine motor activities such as twisting screws for better skill and cognitive activities like remembering which playing cards go in what suit and putting them in order. I have also volunteered at a skilled nursing facility. My responsibilities included evaluating the person’s home for safety after discharge, recommending adaptive equipment, and teaching patients to use that equipment. I assisted our discharged patients with typical activities, from cooking to driving, as they progressed through recovery. I am actively involved with the Meals on Wheels Program, distributing food to the elderly in their homes. We package, deliver, and sit with them for a few minutes to chat after giving them their food. Finally, I have been a Sunday school teacher at my church for the last three years. I look forward to continuing to improve the Spanish that I first began learning as a high school student, in preparation for the chance to help vulnerable little Latinos struggling to communicate in two languages, often in a foreign culture, with parents for whom putting bread on the table is an arduous, daily struggle.
