- PHD Linguistics Personal Purpose, Speakers of Arabic
As a language learner and a language teacher, I always find myself thinking about the process of second language acquisition in a social context. Since my research interests center on socio- and Applied Linguistics, I hope to be accepted into your especially distinguished Ph.D. program in General Linguistics at XXXX University. Your program is my first choice because of its sheer excellence, and I am a good fit, given my academic and research interests. After earning my Master's Degree in Linguistic s , I accepted an offer to serve as a lecturer in Linguistics at XXXX University. I was awarded a full scholarship to pursue a Ph.D. Degree in Linguistics at XXXX University. My central professional goal is to serve as a Linguistics professor in my country, Saudi Arabia, and devote myself to a lifetime of investigation into SLA for native speakers of Arabic. Earning a Ph.D. will help me further improve my language teaching and learning skills. Another reason that makes XXXX my first choice is that it has an Arabic department and offers Arabic as second language classes, which will significantly benefit me in collecting data for my investigations. Finally, after getting to know several Ph.D. students in your program, I found the overall environment of the department to be amicable, encouraging, and highly supportive. I share the research interests of several faculty members, and I am confident that my passion, curiosity, research experience, and enthusiasm will help me excel in your program. I am particularly interested in research done by Dr. XXXX in sociolinguistics. It would be a special honor for me to contribute to studying one of her areas of expertise, second L2 dialect acquisition. I look forward to a whole immersion experience in L2 dialect acquisition among adult learners studying abroad. These L2 learners learned English in the UK, for example, and then moved to the USA to seek an advanced degree? To what extent do their L2 accents change? Does L2 dialect acquisition happen primarily inside or outside the classroom? To what extent is it a conscious process? And what is the social meaning attached to accents in L2? I am also most interested in investigating how and to what extent explicit and implicit feedback benefits L2 learners and how the proficiency level of adult learners affects the effectiveness of corrective feedback. I am engaged with how giving phonological instruction affects perception and production among adult L2 learners and what types of cues L2 speakers use to facilitate verbal comprehension. Extremely high on my list of priorities is an in-depth analysis of how semantic, morphological, and syntactic cues help map the meaning of phonologically ambiguous words. I received comprehensive training in linguistics theory during my graduate study at XXXX University. I gained extensive research in SLA learning and teaching and a wide variety of sub-areas related to linguistics. The program was heavily geared towards research, vastly sharpening my research skills. For example, I analyzed the phonology of Saudi Pidgin and found that SLA theories helped explain the phonological processes in Saudi Pidgin Arabic. I also studied the syntax of Saudi Pidgin Arabic in Professor XXXX’s class. My research suggests that Saudi Pidgin Arabic emerged due to natural second language acquisition and did not represent a true pidgin. I will present my research this January at the Saudi Society of Linguistics Conference. I have also investigated the New Najdi dialect, a term I use to describe the phonological and syntactic changes that occur in the Najdi dialect; for example, I analyzed The Negative Polarity item in Najdi Arabic in Professor Sylvia XXXX’s class. I argue that the noun our, which means 'age,' has been used recently as a negation if preceded or followed by the negative particle ma, which is ungrammatical in Standard Arabic. Previous studies argue that 'our' is an adverb. I say it is a negative polarity item, however, supported by the fact that adverbs cannot be attached with a pronominal suffix in Arabic. During my enrollment in the TESL certificate program, I worked on designing a curriculum under the supervision of Professor XXXX, teaching language to mixed-level classes. I found what I learned before helpful when teaching English in an orphanage in Saudi Arabia. The lack of financial support from the government resulted in a chronic shortage of ESL teachers at the school, so the mixed classes were necessary; since then, I have read widely about teaching mix-level classes in undeveloped countries and refugee camps around the world, etc. I also had the opportunity to lead a TESL class in the EFL program at XXXX University under the supervision of Professor XXXX. I was teaching Arabic for one semester at XXXX University. I learned from teaching Arabic and English as a second language that facial expressions and hand movements help improve students' phonological perception of marked L2 sounds — for example, raising the hand when pronouncing a word with a long vowel. I also aspire to contribute to and enrich the existing literature on Arabic as a second language. I am the first female among my relatives in a vast family with more than one hundred women who have earned a graduate degree and the first among males and females to study abroad earning a Ph.D. The degree will be a profound honor for all of us and an extraordinary honor for me to serve as a role model to others. Thank you for considering my application for Ph.D. studies at XXXX University. - Master of Higher Education Personal Purpose
The Master of Higher Education Program at the University of XXXX is my dream program because of my love for Norway and admiration for its culture and higher education system. A broad-minded young Chinese person with liberal values and a cultivated appreciation for diversity. I have professional experience in higher education in Oceania, North America, and Asia. Raised in Beijing until 16, we moved to New Zealand, where I lived until 22, doing wonders for my English. I will always proudly speak English with a trace of New Zealand. I have also spent considerable time in Japan and am making steady progress in this language, working towards an intermediate level. It has been an extraordinary pleasure to know several parts of the USA. Finishing my undergraduate studies in Marketing and Advertising in 2007, I have more than ten years of working experience in experiential learning programs for graduate as well as high school students and have become incredibly adept at organizing students’ experiential learning field trips, taking students to many rural areas as well as many developed cities in China and other parts of SE Asia. I look forward to the finest graduate education available in research methodology and pedagogy, deepening my understanding of the complex ways that education policy affects the development of specific geographic areas. Spending several summer vacations as a teacher for students of Chinese ethnic minorities in rural areas has been central to developing my professional passion. At my best in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment, I feel most at home at the college where I am currently employed, XXXX College at XXXX University, with students from 49 different countries. I see the Education Program at the University of XXXX as the flagship program, leading the way in innovation in Education for all of Europe and the world. I especially look forward to helping to develop and implement effective policies for accelerating economic development in rural areas of developing countries, most of all China. I am concerned with the many millions of Chinese families separated due to economic factors; the parents working in the city are forced to leave their children behind with the grandparents, lucky to see the family once a year for a short vacation. I see this as cruel, destructive, and unsustainable for Chinese society. I am most pleased to serve as co-leader of two experiential learning programs in my current professional position at XXXX University. In the future, I look forward to assuming more significant levels of responsibility and vastly enhancing the contribution that I can make to my society and the world, especially by assisting NGOs or UN agencies targeting poverty. I look forward to promoting inclusive environments and making recommendations for advancing international study programs. My ideal job would be with UNESCO, OECD, or APEC. I am incredibly excited by the Action Plan of the APEC Education Strategy announced in 2017, whose vision I very much share. It would be a special honor for me to have an opportunity to get involved in the execution of this Action Plan as a university professor, helping to bring about progressive change, and generating new, creative ideas in a constant search for pedagogical innovation. Thank you for considering my application. Master of Higher Education Personal Purpose #master #highereducation #personalstatement #purpose #editing #professional #samples

- MS Statistics Personal Purpose Statement Examples
I was a curious child and electronic engineering came to occupy the center of my world incredibly early on, taking old electronic devices apart and putting them back together again, exploring. Electronics was also my central passion in early adulthood, earning my BS Degree in this area. Even though I majored in Electronic Engineering as an undergraduate student, I have excelled in Math and Physics and long cultivated a particular passion for these areas of study. Gradually and for some time now, despite earning my degree in Engineering, I have come to believe that my professional calling lies in Statistics. The bridge between electronic engineering and statistics was my close relationship with my computers, which gradually assumed a leading role in my life, becoming integral to my professional mindset and spheres of interest. A good student highly motivated to achieve excellence in education, the MS in Statistics Program at XXXX University is my first choice for graduate school for several reasons, most of all the sheer excellence of your program and its location. I keenly look forward to giving my all to Statistical Learning and Optimization. I very much admire the thoroughly interdisciplinary nature of the program at XXXX, with the flexibility of choosing electives from a wide range of domains, including engineering and I am also keenly excited about the prospect of learning from and contributing to the consulting services offered by the Statistics Department. Statistics for Good is also an initiative by Stanford that I admire since volunteer work has been close to my heart since my days as a volunteer teacher in Varanasi, here in India, where I was born and raised. I deeply respect and would love to participate in Statistics for Good in any way possible. If accepted to Statistics at XXXX, I will most definitely attend the program. I see myself in the future as a member of an industrial research and development team working on developing statistical learning and optimization algorithms to solve problems in engineering. As I see it, earning an MS degree in Statistics is the logical culmination of my passion for statistics and optimization. I hope to be accepted to Stanford because of its world-class reputation and research atmosphere, the best faculty, exceptional peers, excellent infrastructure, and the optimal location for exploring my potential. A high achiever since my high school days, in 2012, I was awarded the Best Student in the City of Mumbai Award for high academic achievement and distinguished extracurricular activities. Similarly, I was awarded the most coveted Director's Gold Medal for outstanding all-around achievement and leadership among some nine hundred B. Tech graduates of the 2018 batch. Along with my Engineering courses, as an undergraduate student, I also studied Math, Probability, and Statistics, with the latter stealing my heart. In my sophomore year, I served as an undergraduate researcher in the Sensors and Systems Lab at IIT BHU. I worked as an undergraduate researcher on the classification of gases using the response data generated by the gas sensor array. This represented my first significant exposure to data preprocessing, machine learning, and swarm intelligence. I took the much-vaunted online course Machine Learning by Dr. Andrew Ng to quickly get familiar with the basic concepts. In the end, I developed a CNN model from scratch. I trained it with PSO to get a faster convergence, reducing the data dimension using PCA to tackle the highly correlated sensor responses. Learning a great deal about statistical learning and optimization, I was also given a glimpse of how core engineering problems might be solved due to the discovery of hidden patterns in data. I now have a solid academic foundation for further optimization and statistics studies, especially digital signal processing, forecasting, and Time Series Analysis. My courses in quantitative methods, information and distribution theory, and wireless communications have been balanced with studies involving a lot of programming, mathematical modeling, and simulation. I also have a solid grasp of artificial intelligence and parallel algorithms. Linear programming, solving PDEs, Bayesian learning, Riemann Integrals, queuing theory, MDPs, game theory, neural networks, fuzzy logic, and pdf, to name several, are all integral parts of my professional toolkit. Having Dr. XXXX, an Assistant Professor at BHU, as my advisor was a special honor. He was perfect for helping me develop my focus on learning and optimization and the Beam Selection problem in massive MIMO systems for 5G communications. We explored traditional techniques like Markov Decision Processes and maximum weight matching. We found Matching Theory, a concept used in Economics, uniquely suited for the research. We modeled the problem into an externalities game and devised a novel heuristic algorithm to get a stable result. Then we created a novel linear precoder based on QR decomposition of the channel matrix, further improving the outcomes significantly better than the state-of-the-art algorithms, resulting in publication in IEEE Access. It was also a special honor to serve as a Teaching Assistant for the course Probabilistic Graphical Models', which involved tutoring students after class, answering their questions, helping them formulate solutions to assignments and grading papers. Dr. XXXX, currently working at Ericsson Canada, has played a significant role in my decision to pursue a career as a statistician. I still work with him on finding DNN-based approaches to solve problems in 5G communications. I have been affiliated with NVIDIA as a summer intern in my senior year and as a full-time engineer after graduation. I form part of a team that develops a tool that projects upcoming chips' power and performance numbers using statistical techniques. In the past year, I have also worked on product binning analysis, a convex optimization program that allows significant variances in the performance of the finished chips to be optimally condensed into a smaller number of marketed designations. I also develop non-linear regression models to project next-generation GPUs' leakage power and clock numbers. The remarkable thing is that the tool assists higher management in making crucial business decisions. I have seen instances at NVIDIA where decisions with millions of dollars hanging in the balance have been primarily made based on the data generated by this tool. For me, this underscores the incredible potential impact of statistics. Thank you for considering my application to Statistics at XXXX. - MSC Finance Personal Purpose Statement Example, London
XXXX University is my first choice for graduate school in Finance for several reasons, including London's vast intellectual and multicultural resources. Most of all, I crave the rigorous education that stands behind your world-class reputation. It would be a special honor for me to become a student of Professor XXXX, who I listened to with great interest when he spoke at Tsinghua University in China this past April of 2017. I could not have been more favorably impressed with the sophistication of his articulation of equilibrium theory and its relationship to product complexity and financial markets, areas to which I look forward to devoting a great deal of attention. Born and raised in Beijing, China, I could not be more highly motivated to achieve excellence in Finance. This field has been making critically essential advances over the last decade in China, alongside and supporting the Chinese economy. I see myself preparing for a lifetime of service to my country of origin in support of its complex economic relationships with the rest of the world. I have already studied in London for a year and a half, earning my first master's degree, the MSc in Computer Science. Since then, I returned to China, where I have been engaged in innovative technological advancement in the areas most relevant to Finance. I now hope to earn my second master's degree in the same marvelous city with so much to offer the student searching for the finest and most international education in Finance available on the planet. From 2014 through 2018, I worked for a patent agency, dealing with clients operating in financial services technology. Since then, I have worked as an industry analyst at XXXX University, focusing on FinTech. I investigated industry trends, analyzed the market, and spent a lot of time listening to people in this industry, ideas, and opinions. Heavily engaged in Fintech industrial research, I am keenly interested in fixed-income-related challenges and issues. Becoming a fixed-income analyst and trader is one of the career options I am exploring, taking advantage of my background in Mathematics, notably Computer Science. I enjoy my full engagement in equity research, investigating the financial industry as well as individual companies. I worked as an industry analyst at XXXX University, focusing on FinTech. I investigated industry trends, analyzed the market, and spent a lot of time listening to people in this industry, ideas, and opinions. Heavily engaged in Fintech industrial research, I am keenly interested in fixed-income-related challenges and issues. Becoming a financial analyst and trader is one of the career options I am exploring, taking advantage of my background in Mathematics and Computer Science. I plan to distinguish myself as a graduate student in Finance at XXU. After graduation, as I am interested in fixed-income-related financial initiatives, I plan to gain further experience serving as an analyst in a retail bank or an asset management firm. I see myself eventually serving in a senior role in the corporate hierarchy, gradually climbing up the ladder of increasing responsibility in the company. I particularly look forward to serving as a portfolio manager, helping my clients think strategically for the long term, and putting everything I have learned as a graduate student and beyond to work on their behalf. At some point, I might work as a freelance financial analyst or consultant, depending on the circumstances and the opportunities. I particularly appreciate how Finance is a fast-developing industry that plays a significant role in preserving and advancing local and global society, serving the critical function of resource allocation. The rapid growth of the Chinese economy and marketplace has been stimulating, just like these moments of slowdown increase firms' strength characterize the present time. For me, the Finance industry is about serving people, businesses, organizations, institutions, and individuals, helping them make wise investment decisions. I see this as contributing to my country and planetary society, more generally speaking, to economic growth and maintenance. Advancing cultural ties on an international level and commerce increases and, by extension, the economies in which those firms do business and make investments. The celebration of diversity and the cultivation of international solidarity between Asian countries has been central to my intellectual and academic interests for some time now, and this is why I make an enormous investment of time and energy in learning Japanese and improving it to the level where I already meet the language requirement for most programs of advanced study in Japan. Still, XXU is my first choice. Being accepted to your innovative program would be the crowning honor of my academic life so far, and I will most definitely attend if selected. I have embraced diversity and cultivated my multicultural understanding in a variety of places besides China and England, including Italy and Greece, Thailand, Hong Kong, Russia, Taiwan, and Japan. I am especially fond of Japanese drama and music. Thank you for considering my application to study toward the MSc Degree in Finance at XXXX University. - Osteopathic Medicine, Medical School, Immigrant from India
An Indian American man who immigrated to America at the age of twelve, the ideals of my culture have directed me to study science and place an extremely high priority on education and serving one’s fellow man and community. I hope to practice medicine back home in India and in America, volunteering my time back home as much as possible as my medical career progresses. My focus in India will be exclusively on the underserved, and this is one of the reasons that I am applying to study at an Osteopathic Medical School since I feel strongly that hands-on manipulation techniques have particularly great value when one sees large numbers of patients, perhaps only once, doing what one can for them generally on the same day. It has also been clear that my central goal is to help members of my community here in New York City, primarily Indian immigrants from Punjab. I am pleased that I spent enough time in India to learn our native language, Punjabi, reading, speaking, and writing it on a level of excellence. This will enable me to relate to and better serve Punjabi speakers here in New York City. Throughout my adolescence and early adult life, I have paid close attention to the medically underserved in my community, Queens, NY, many of whom do not adequately attend to their health care needs for a variety of reasons, most of which have something to do with being a first-generation immigrant from India. Thus, I look forward to helping the underserved members of my community here in NYC. My developing appreciation of how chemistry is the foundation of all life led me to choose it as an undergraduate major. I excelled and earned my bachelor's degree at XXXX this past January 2017. My most enjoyable moments as an undergraduate student were spent doing bench research for two years in an organic synthesis lab. My dedication to my studies and research was rewarded by earning a scholarship award and the privilege of giving several symposium presentations. I hope to establish my clinic to advance my practice and service to the community where I live; I also look forward to having a family. Coming from a middle-class family and overcoming numerous obstacles and roadblocks to get where we are today, I have learned to appreciate the vital importance of family on many levels, especially health issues. Being a responsible family member is also central to my goals in life. I appreciate how my parents have struggled throughout their lives so that I would have educational and professional opportunities as an adult. I fully intend to do the same for the children I hope to have in the future. Volunteer service is a fundamental cornerstone value for my family and culture. I shall always remain active on behalf of organizations concerned with providing health care for those in the greatest need. I started volunteering with the American Red Cross in 2016, and I am still a continually active member. I volunteer for the ARC’s HFPC (Home Fire Preparedness Campaign). With this program, we go to people’s homes and install free smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, educating them on fire safety and what to do in a fire. I have volunteered in a hospital for about two years, performing various duties, from organizing and maintaining medical files to helping the nurses. I especially enjoy bringing the patients their meals and the pleasant interactions. I have long hoped to be selected for your distinguished program in Osteopathic Medicine so that I can become a holistic medicine practitioner, doing everything in my power to help my patients recover and heal. I like to think that everything that I have done so far has prepared me in one way or another to give my all 24/7 to your program in Osteopathic Medicine, including the jobs that I have had so far along the way. As a summer intern (2013), I learned a great deal while serving in my state senator's office, helping form community liaisons. This would often include preparing flyers about upcoming events hosted by the senator’s office and then going out in the field to communicate this information to the people. I have often worked dealing with immigration policy, job fairs, etc. After that summer of 2013, I began a retail sales position where I continued for the next two years, cultivating my people skills, and learning a lot about human nature and America and its many cultures. Thank you for considering my application to devote my professional life to Osteopathic Medicine. #osteopathic #medicalschool #DO #personalstatement #samples #examples #writing #editing
- MPH Oral Public Health Personal Purpose Statement
Since I graduated first in my high school class with a GPA of 99.7%, many career paths have been open to me. However, my plan since childhood had been to become a dentist and then an orthodontist. I pursued the continuity of my dreams and now serve as a Demonstrator in the Department of Orthodontics at King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia, where I completed dental school. However, throughout the last several years, as my career in dentistry has progressed, I have become increasingly engaged with global oral health issues, especially concerning Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. My independent research into oral public health in Saudi Arabia has resulted in my thinking increasingly in statistical terms about oral health on a national and local level in assessing oral health care issues. It is my sincere hope to be accepted to your distinguished Master’s Degree Program in Public Health so that I can make professional progress in this area and become an advocate for improved oral health care access, structures, and outcomes in Saudi Arabia - making dental care more affordable and focusing primarily on measures that prevent oral health decay from occurring in the first place. Completing your MPH program will empower and inspire me to a lifetime of public service and contribution to my community as a public health professional and advocate, especially in terms of providing oral health care service for Saudi Arabia’s underserved, many of whom are guest workers that often neglect oral health care, particularly on a preventive level. After finishing dental school second in my class at King Abdulaziz University, I enjoyed the diversity and intensity of the following internships. I am very loyal to and passionate about the university where I have been educated and where I now serve. Earning the MPH Degree will enable me to maximize my contribution to my university as well as the surrounding community as a dedicated researcher, a kind and caring teacher who makes herself available to her students, and a role model, particularly for other female dentists in my country who seek broader participation in oral health care policy decisions and their implementation. I have lived, studied, and worked only in Saudi Arabia but have traveled as a tourist in Europe and the Middle East. I enjoy being exposed to new cultures and sharing insights into the rich heritage of the societies I am fortunate enough to know. I am most pleased with how English serves as an international language for oral health care professionals as our global communication vehicle. As a team player, I always stay conscious of the common goals I share with those I work with. Some of my fondest activities include volunteering to serve on our mobile clinic, educating the community about oral health, and attending to children in our university hospital. Thank you for considering my application. MPH Oral Public Health Personal Purpose Statement #mph #publichealth #master #oralhealth #personalstatement #writing #editing #examples #help
- PHD Epidemiology, Public Health Personal Purpose
A medical doctor from Cameroon who could not be more passionate about Public Health, I hope to earn a Ph.D. Degree in Epidemiology to be able to make my entire contribution to the advancement of public health worldwide, especially in Africa and Cameroon. After completing medical school with distinction in my country in 2013, I earned my master's degree in public health, focusing on Epidemiology, at the University of XXXX this past August of 2018. At the University of XXXX, I joined the CHI-UAB team (Cameroon Health Initiative- University of XXXX), where I assisted with the planning and execution of research projects aimed at gathering evidence and developing methods geared toward improving patient care in my country. The project that consumed the most of my time was dedicated to improving birth outcomes among women in labor. I am in the process of publishing in this area as the first author. I currently work as a research assistant at the UAB 1917 HIV clinic, where I review electronic medical records and quality assurance. I also have experience as a research assistant for the Neurology Department at UX. My experience practicing medicine in Cameroon will also help me excel as a doctoral student in Public Health Epidemiology. During my service at the Goul fey District Hospital in the extreme north of Cameroon, I soon discovered that minor ailments—some with fatal consequences—could have been prevented. Many lives could have been saved if it were not for the fact that those affected believed that they were ill because of a curse by ‘Allah.’ I saw children and older adults dying because they were unaware that having a clean environment, using mosquito nets, or even taking simple anti-malaria medicine could have prevented and cured their ailments. I soon found that many diseases, such as meningitis, measles, and tetanus, to name a few, could be curbed by education, simply informing a community of the need for vaccinations. This was the primary driving force that led me to pursue graduate school in Public Health. I have extensive experience within Cameroonian hospitals and providing health care services in the public and private sectors. Upon graduation, I was appointed by the Minister of Public health to serve as a Physician in the Goul fey District, Extreme North Region of Cameroon. This rural district is quite challenging to access due to the poor road network, with over 80,000 inhabitants. I acted as the malaria and HIV/AIDS project focal point with donors and project stakeholders (communities and civil society). I oversaw and supported the development and implementation of projects in close collaboration with local partners and actively supervised and coordinated local activities related to Donor (WHO, MSF) funded projects in the Goul fey district. My duties revolved around implementing our National Immunization Campaign and fighting against cholera, tuberculosis, malaria, and HIV/AIDS. We carried out these activities under extreme conditions of insecurity, with constant threats from one of the world’s most deadly terrorist groups, Boko Haram. By 2014, violence escalated dramatically with repeated bomb blasts and kidnappings, and all health care workers were forced to leave the area. I accepted the position of Medical Director for the XXXX Medical Foundation in Douala. I participated in meetings geared toward planning and executing Public Health Projects. Cameroon needs public health care professionals capable of initiating and implementing health policies that potentially will have far-reaching, positive effects on the health of ordinary people, especially outside of the major cities. Having learned a great deal about the devastating impact of Infectious diseases such as TB, malaria, and HIV/AIDS on the population of Cameroon, my experience battling these diseases and caring for the stricken will help me as I continue to struggle to contribute to the solution. I am especially looking forward to devising strategies for the surveillance of adverse effects following vaccination which are seldom adequately reported in this area – alongside the planning and execution of various Public Health projects. Thank you for considering my application for the Ph.D. in Public Health Epidemiology at XXXX University. - Research Fellowship Personal Purpose Sample
I hold a Ph.D. Degree in Music and Anthropology from the University of XXXX. Given that the area of my research interests dovetails nicely with the focus of your research project, I hope very much to be considered favorably for your Research Fellowship in support of the project ‘Social cohesion and resilience through intercultural music engagement.’ My interdisciplinary research and teaching experience draws upon ethnomusicological theory, sociology, psychology, and soundscape ecological theory. I am passionate about these areas of inquiry, particularly as they relate to intercultural musical movement and engagement. I feel I could make valuable contributions if chosen to assist with your project. My Ph.D. research focused on the music and musicians of a transnational Mongol ethnic minority both at home and in Australia, exploring some of the ways that musicians creatively negotiate representations of themselves; in this case, as members of a minority ethnic group and a transnational Mongol community seeking to engage. I have spent countless hours investigating the music of Mongolian migrants to Australia, the source of the music on various levels, as an expression of diasporic identity, solidarity, and a quest for emotional well-being in their community. My extensive experience with studying musical audiences in their cultural context, alongside my transnational fieldwork and migration experience, has helped me achieve an increasingly sophisticated grasp of a whole host of issues as they relate to questions or controversies surrounding cultural diversity. Having spent years studying multicultural Australian communities, my work with the Mongolian community has been incredibly intense, based on relationships as collaborative research initiatives enduring over time. Now a published investigator, I have worked hard to develop strong quantitative and qualitative research skills over the last decade. Having independently analyzed more than three hundred historical recordings and conducted over eighty interviews with musicians and scholars at an international level, I could not be more pleased with how analysis of musical performance and supporting fieldwork data now stand at the center of my world. I also enjoy my current focus on nomadic society with its creative use of visual and zoological metaphors. Before earning my Ph.D., I earned a master's degree at the same institution in Music Education. I began my intensive study of multiculturalism in the psychological literature during this period, preparing myself for further investigation into the relationship between human behavior and mental processes on the one hand and music performance in its diverse cultural manifestations on the other. I examined how the same music expresses both a sense of longing and nostalgia for the homeland; and, at the same time, an intense desire to enter modernity fully. Through an analysis of historical recordings, I examined why performers tended to experience specific emotional reactions at certain stages of their singing; and how their emotions played out in apparent, especially prominent aesthetic features of their performance. My publication profile is growing and now includes two books of which I am the single author – one in my two languages (English and Mandarin) and various articles in prestigious academic journals. I have been teaching as a guest lecturer at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music since 2018, and I have also spoken at various international conferences, enhancing my public-speaking skills. Years of tutoring piano students have helped me better understand human nature and cultivate my interpersonal and multicultural communication skills. Contributing to the direction of the Musical Channel for China Central Television has helped me master my organizational skills further and heightened my confidence, particularly when organizing conferences and networking with collaborators. I could not be more excited by the prospect of being part of the ‘Social cohesion and resilience through intercultural music engagement’ project at The University of Melbourne and working with your department to further intercultural musical knowledge and appreciation through research and engagement with collaborators in the community. I appreciate your consideration of my application, and I would be incredibly grateful for the opportunity to further discuss the position with you. I hope to hear from you. - JD Labor Law and Human Rights Personal Statement
Born in England and raised in Brazil, I am a multicultural and multilingual Brazilian woman with a great passion for social justice. Before I immigrated to the USA and made Miami my home, I became an attorney with special training in Labor Law and Human Rights in Brazil. I also acquired both volunteer and research experience in Labor Law. Now a US citizen, I am entering my final year of study t the LLM Degree at the University of XXXX and have been working as a paralegal for the past several years. In addition to my native Portuguese, I am fluent in Spanish and could not feel more at home in XXXX, mainly because my four-year-old son is Cuban. For this reason, especially considering its sheer excellence, the University of XXXX is my first choice to continue my studies toward the JD Degree required by the State of Florida to sit for the Bar. Increasingly, as my career in Law progresses, I want to think and act increasingly on an international level, and the respect commanded worldwide by the University of XXXX Law School is best suited for realizing my lofty ambitions. I look forward to laboring at the service of non-profit organizations dedicated to the furthering of humanitarian causes that I embrace. For some time now, I have seen immigration law and civil/human rights cases as the center of my career interests. It would be a special honor to give my all to an organization dedicated to helping immigrant victims from war zones find asylum in a safe place where they would have an opportunity to rebuild their lives. Most recently, I have been engaging in my spare time with environmental law. I look forward to in-depth study in this area as a student in your JD Program at XXXX University. Engaging on a variety of volunteer levels with non-profits whose work has interested me, I found one organization to be incredibly inspiring: Women for Women International, working with women who are victims of war and other marginalized, victimized, and exploited women, most mothers with children. I have found it quite disturbing to watch small children imprisoned in wire cages along our southern border, many thousands separated from their parents and hundreds lost. I am especially keen to begin my study of Environmental Law at the University of XXXX because I just watched nearly one-third of South America’s rainforest burn with little to nothing being done about it. As the major US city most vulnerable to climate change, Miami has much to lose due to greed and irresponsibility in Brazil. This gives me hope that I might be able to make significant contributions to Environmental Law and Human Rights, particularly by exploring the intimate ways in which they are intertwined. Thank you for considering my application to the JD Program at the University of XXXX.
