Petroleum Engineering Personal Purpose Statement

Updated: Apr 8

The Master of Petroleum Engineering at XXXX University is my first choice for graduate school because of the program's location and sheer excellence. I graduated from the University of XXXX College of Engineering with a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering on 19 December 2014. I could not be more dedicated to lifelong education in my field; thus, not long after earning my degree, I registered for a prep course to sit the NCEES Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) examination and become a registered professional engineer in the State of Texas. I am currently a certified Engineer-in-Training (TX).

I have also enjoyed taking courses offered by the Society of Petroleum Engineers and attending conferences and exhibitions held throughout the year. I have recently invested a lot of energy researching drilling optimization in the literature, especially managed pressure drilling (MPD). I also have a longstanding interest and look forward to additional research into well completions in unconventional plays. The most significant professional contribution I can envision making to Petroleum Engineering is becoming a good role model, leading by example, being socially responsible, and mentoring those professionals who come after me. Very much an internationalist, I look forward to helping to bring about economic stability for developing countries where hydrocarbons have been discovered. The development of a vast infrastructure that enables the exploration, drilling, production, testing, transport, refining, and sale of petroleum products can sustain a society by creating jobs and new services. At the same time, I also hope to distinguish myself as a student and beyond by careful attention to the need to protect our natural environment and its wildlife. I also spend much of my free time reading about reducing harmful emissions.

My long-term goal is to contribute to the innovative education of future generations of petroleum engineers, helping develop and take advantage of the latest in innovative technologies to improve operations, making them cleaner and more efficient. Thus far, I have worked in entry-level consulting for litigation support (in oil and gas/energy), production, and drilling. I would like to have the opportunity to learn more about well completions and reservoir engineering, increasingly immersing myself in the minute details. I would like to be a consultant for companies that engage in the acquisition, exploration, and production of oil and natural gas, helping them meet the challenges in their endeavors. Learning more about the geology and lithology of various oil and gas-producing regions is central to my professional plans, operating conditions downhole one site from another. My ideal job will allow me to contribute to creating and maintaining safe working conditions as an integral and necessary part of all solutions developed to meet unique challenges for oil and gas operations. I look forward to balancing my time providing consulting services and working alongside teams of experienced professionals devoted to incredibly challenging operations. The opportunity to teach or mentor younger professionals is also an integral part of how I see myself in the future. Worker safety and protection of the environment are the cornerstones of my worldview.

My work ethic will enable me to excel at Texas A&M. I long to become part of the generations of hard-working men and women graduating from your institution over its rich history. I very much admire the passion and drive of the distinguished graduate Erasmo Trevino "E.T." Guerrero ('49), the first Ph.D. recipient in petroleum engineering at Texas A&M. I like to think that I have become incredibly adept at working most effectively in multidisciplinary teams in the never-ending search for solutions to real-world problems affecting our industry. I am keenly interested in the broad spectrum of disciplines within petroleum engineering, both upstream and downstream, especially reservoir, drilling, completions, and production.

Mexico was my home for the first six years; since then, I have lived in the USA, a recipient of DACA since I was brought here as a child. Now 30 and married to a US citizen, I am finally becoming nationalized after these many years, and I am most grateful. As an undergraduate student, I frequently volunteered at the University of Houston as a volunteer with two student chapters, the Society of Petroleum Engineers, and the American Association of Drilling Engineers. Upon graduation, I was thrilled to accept an offer from my good drilling and completion course professor of a position with his consulting firm. I worked for one year providing technical support for litigation involving energy and energy services companies.

After one year, I moved on to the challenges of working in marginally producing oil and gas wells in Central Texas, just on the edge of the Permian Basin to the East. There, I worked on optimizing production and finding areas for operational improvement. We began working on developing enhanced oil recovery (EOR) projects using steam injection, contributing to the initial stages of implementation by the time I left after one year and nine months. I am now working for an international drilling contractor in the Easter Area. I provide operational support for a fleet of 26 drilling rigs in the states of Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. I closely follow Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and suggest areas for improvement. I also assist rig managers (Toolpushers) with modifications and operational changes to their rigs. As a district, we meet quarterly with our customers to ensure that we meet their needs and inquire about how we can improve. I have been in my present position for nine months.

I thank you for considering my application to Petroleum Engineering at XXXX.
