In my service with the National Youth Service Corps Program in Nigeria, I soon discovered that minor ailments—some with fatal consequences—could have been prevented and many lives saved if it were not for the fact that those effected believed that they resulted from a curse by God. I was especially struck by the sight of a child with severe burns resulting from the superstitious belief that meningitis was caused by evil spirits that could only be driven away by exposure to fire. I saw children and old people alike dying because they were unaware that having a clean environment, using mosquito nets, or even taking simple anti-malaria medicine could have prevented and/or cured their ailments. I soon learned that many diseases, such as meningitis, measles, tetanus, to name a few, could be prevented by education, simply informing a community of the need for vaccinations. My pursuit of a medical degree in Nigeria and now a master's in public health in America, are based on these early experiences with the Service Corps. Since I graduated from medical school and practiced medicine in my country of origin, I am well prepared for graduate studies in epidemiology. While America is now my permanent home, my professional aspirations are all geared towards returning to Africa for long, working visits to my homeland so that I can help my people in their struggle to develop an adequate health care system, especially in terms of education and the creation of social infrastructures for the implementation of programs in preventive medicine. Science is my right hand, my spiritual expression, and the focal point of my professional and humanitarian curiosity: the investigation and critical analysis of public health issues in especially vulnerable populations. I want very much to attend your highly esteemed graduate program in public health with a concentration in epidemiology so that I will be well prepared to make the maximum contribution possible to the amelioration of the profound suffering that results from the absence of adequate preventive medicine and health care education programs both in America, and throughout the struggling African continent—especially Nigeria where I am uniquely well suited to making major contributions towards the advancement of health care systems. Even prior to attending medical school, Public Health was my first fascination, what has long been central to my heart, at least ever since my undergraduate studies and volunteer work in my community with orphanages, old people’s homes, public waste disposal systems, prisons, elementary schools, high schools, and farms, numerous sites that I investigated as a community health researcher, studying the environmental foundations of disease transmission and the complex ways that it is also spread as a result of the simplest of life-style choices, generally grounded in the complex union of ignorance and poverty. Finding information, listening to the peculiarities of each group, collecting, and evaluating data, summarizing findings and drawing conclusions in a search for viable solutions is my life. Public Health was my central preoccupation throughout my undergraduate studies, medical school, and rotations as a practicing physician in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Pediatrics. My dedication to Public Health continued in my service as a medical officer in the Amen Healthcare and Empowerment Foundation and my collaboration with the Nigerian Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization. I desperately need the special expertise that I will gain in your program to help my people. On behalf of Nigeria, I thank you sincerely for your consideration of my application to your program. - MPA Statement of Purpose Example Canada
Born in Poland and a dual citizen of Poland and the USA, I have been back to visit my family in Europe every couple of years. I also make an extended visit each couple of years to my husband’s family in Malaysia. Having close family spread around the globe from Europe to Asia has helped me to cultivate a sense of identity as a global citizen with a planetary mentality, someone who is most keen on the celebration of diversity and well-read concerning diversity issues, especially in the workplace. Furthermore, I have an affinity with language. Growing up bilingual Polish/English, I also studied Mandarin Chinese intensively for a full year in Taiwan and continue to maintain this ability in addition to learning French. I am convinced that all the above will help me to excel in your MPA Program at the University of Victoria. I have been working as a Chartered Professional Accountant, CPA, CMA, since 2009 and a Certified Fraud Examiner since 2011. For the past four years serving as a Tax Auditor with the Yukon Territorial Government, I have enjoyed my career in accounting and auditing. Now, however, I crave additional professional advancement and the opportunity to attain greater levels of organizational responsibility - exercising my leadership potential. I have also been extremely inspired over the course of the last several years by my volunteer service, helping new immigrants to adjust to life in Canada with the Immigrant Services Society of British Columbia (2010-12); as well as serving as Chairperson of the Board of Directors with the Pacific Post Partum Support Society from 2009 through 2013, where I worked to increase the society’s profile within the province and developed stable funding sources that ushered in a period of growth and development for our organization. I am troubled by what I see as a very unfair distribution of health care resources both within Canada and especially worldwide; and I keenly look forward to studying some of the principles obstacles to progress that are involved in this area. It is in health care where I hope to distinguish myself as a public administrator and. I am convinced that I am the best fit with your rigorous master's degree Program in Public Administration at the University of XXXX because of my elevated level of motivation and discipline and my determination to excel professionally. I also very much look forward to studying issues and engaging in discussions with peers at the University of Victoria about ways to improve our society and to safeguard the gains that we have already made in terms of diversity and inclusivity. The election of Donald Trump in the USA has me frightened and worried, along with many others, concerned with the fragility of and seeking to safeguard our liberal democracy. I am also concerned by recent backlashes against immigrants and refugees not only in Europe and the USA, but Canada as well. Protecting and assisting the Indigenous people of Canada has been one of my longstanding passions that I hope to pursue further in the future, as an MPA student at the University of XXXX and beyond. The First Nations have been the subject of my personal research focus for many years, and I hope to have an ongoing, lifetime interaction with the rights and interests of First Nations peoples in Canada. After earning the MPA Degree at the University of XXXX, I plan to serve as the director of a non-profit organization devoted to the public interest, fighting corruption, the protection of our natural resources and the rights of Indigenous peoples in Canada, etc. It would also be the fulfillment of a professional dream or me to work for or collaborate with the United Nations at some point in my career, especially in immigration or with refugees in Canada. The decade of my life and youth that I gave to Canada’s Naval Reserve Division from 1996 through 2006 will always be with me. The training and experience that I received in this period is also of foundational importance for whatever else I have accomplished so far or will go on to accomplish in the future. As a Leading Seaman, Cook serving on the HMCS Discovery, I was responsible for the ongoing development and training of junior food services personnel, reinforcing trade skills, developing, and giving theory-based lectures on topics such as menu planning, cost accounting, and workplace health and safety. I coordinated the general provision of food services for 50 to 150 personnel during military training exercises including equipment and staffing requirements. Particularly as the ship’s Unit Training Coordinator and Workplace Relations Advisor as well as a member of the Ship’s Welfare Committee, I learned a wide range of basic skill sets that are at least indirectly related to public administration that will enable me to excel at the University of XXXX, everything from communications and human relations to supply chain and human nutrition. Last year, I had the pleasure of taking a class with one of the faculty in your program at the University of XXXX, Dr. XXXX. The class, "The Art n' Craft of Public Policy" was sponsored by my employer. This further inspired me to apply to your program. I particularly appreciated how Dr. Vakil was able to deal with such extraordinarily complex policy issues in a way that was both accessible and intellectually rigorous. Finally, I appreciate the fact that your program is online - so that I can continue to work and apply what I am learning. The University of XXXX is especially well regarded in my workplace and it would be a great honor to study at such a well-respected institution of higher learning. Thank you for considering my application. MPA Canada Statement of Purpose Example #MPA #Canada #StatementofPurpose # Example
- MPA Statement of Purpose California State Government
The UXX XXXX School is the only graduate program to which I am applying for three reasons: its location a few blocks from the California State Capital, the policy outreach opportunities that are an integral part of your program, and the fact that the XXXX School is recognized consistently as being near the top of the rankings. Your program represents the optimal springboard upon which to continue building my career as a professional servant of the State of California. I have enjoyed increasing levels of professional responsibility for the last several years providing me with invaluable opportunities in management. I hope to continue to assume greater levels of responsibility corresponding to the ongoing development of my expertise in change management. I like to think of myself as on the forefront of change since I am the IT man in the organization who oversees the development of our information and communication systems. My extensive experience as an IT manager for the State of California is the single-strongest aspect of my application to your competitive program. Given the ever-more-prominent role that IT communications and data management play in political organization and policy development, I am pleased to find myself at the center of action with respect to change management. At least one member of every generation of my family has served in the United States military since before the Civil War. This fact alone had an enormous impact on the formation of my identity. (I will always have a military haircut.) My world came to a grinding halt, however, when I was rejected for military service for a minor illness which, while it has no impact at all on my performance as a civilian employee, barring me from military service. I adjusted to this unwelcome news little by little and channeled my energies into public service and administration, going on to complete my undergraduate studies in History with a minor in Political Science and jumping straight into California State Politics with an internship in 2004. Following my internship, I worked as a Campaign Consultant and finally a Legislative Aid, first for Assemblymember XXXX (AD-07) and then for Senator XXXX (SD-02). For the past two years, I have been working for the California State Board of Equalization. I look forward to a long and highly productive lifetime of service to the State of California and by extension my country. I have spent many years cultivating the foremost military virtues involved in civic service, and I am confident that my passion to serve will enable me to excel in your distinguished MPA Program at UXX Sacramento. My long-term goal is to one day serve as the Executive Director of a State Agency or as a Chief of Staff for a political campaign. My desire to serve the public began when I was a child, instilled in me by my parents and grandparents who taught me to envision doing something that would have a positive impact. Thus, I seek to harness the energy that my heritage has endowed me with in my growth professionally as a civil servant in California. One of my grandfathers was a freedom fighter recognized by the Indian Government for his selfless contributions during the liberation of India and then his work in improving the lives of Indian people in general. My father was the principal of a high school in California until he retired; at which point he devoted the balance of his life starting and running five rural schools in India to provide an enhanced learning environment to children and adults in villages, something like his own Indian Head Start Program. As I grew up, I was an eager apprentice, working hard to arm myself with fundamental knowledge in public and governance affairs. I participated in boot camps and volunteer programs providing community services to local neighborhood organizations where I grew up in California. In 1983, when I graduated from college, I won a National Urban Administration Support scholarship from the Indian Government and had a chance to study Political Science for one academic year at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. This experience early on taught me the importance of celebrating diversity, something which could hardly be more important in today’s California. I also learned a great deal about how the Indian government works and its systematic approach to addressing the needs of the public. I always labored as a student to stay engaged with numerous community services and I continued to do so during my internship in India at Swami Vivekanand Jankalyan Sansthan. I am especially proud to have been part of the team that created the Ranchi Self-help Clean Water Distribution Project, which offers an example of what a dedicated community of people can accomplish with a clear focus and an ardent desire to improve their lives. Over the course of the last 2 decades, I have volunteered my time to organizations as an IT development expert because of the spiritual fulfillment that accompanies social service, and a concern for the welfare of the neediest among us, especially in California but also throughout the world, peace, children, the environment, etc. My interests in the environment and sustainable development encouraged me to seek out community projects with great promise but few financial resources. I have volunteered my services to community organizations in Afghanistan, Armenia, Bangladesh, Canada, France, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Kenya, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, UAE, UK, and US. People tend to be limited not so much by their ability as they are by their vision. I have a vision for the future of continuing to help many more community organizations in emerging countries, especially those that have been torn by conflict and face the inevitable post-conflict challenges as they rebuild their communities. From 2006-2010, I served as a Legislative Aide to State Senator XXXX. In that capacity, I became a Project Advocate for the XXXX project and went on to manage communications for one of the largest Information Technology projects in the State of California, the Centralized Revenue Opportunity System, a $279 million dollar project current being undertaken by the California State Board of Equalization to modernize the technology that supports the collection and administration of sales and use-tax and other tax-and-fee programs throughout the state. I would go on to spend the next several years working directly for the California State Board of XXXX where I remain until today. My current position is Regional Outreach Manager. The advance of my own communication skills has been enhanced by my professional position, interacting with internal staff, California State agencies, elected officials, legislative committees, taxpayers, labor unions, etc. I especially look forward to studying under Professor XXXX since I admire his research a great deal and I am most keenly interested in questions of both passion and purpose in public administration. I have now spent the last three years in state service at the CA State Board of XXXX, the Outreach Services Division, and the XXXX project. I have learned over the course of the last three years to think critically and creatively about my work, and I have a lot to share with the academic community at the XXXX School because of my experiences and the challenges that I have faced. As I see it, there is a distinct need in California, particularly in state government, for people to develop new skills for public management and the proper implementation of the innovative techniques that we must employ to ensure success in a new, globally competitive environment fed by IT. The XXXX School can provide me with what I need the most at this time, an in-depth understanding of Public Administration, particularly in terms of systematic knowledge. Completing your program will enhance my theoretical understanding and grasp of empirical approaches, empowering me to make creative and sustainable administrative decisions. Thank you for your consideration of my application. MPA Statement of Purpose California State Government #MPA #StatementofPurpose

Coming to America from Liberia in 1980 was critically important for my family's survival. Liberia had an attempted coup, resulting in the deaths of government officials by firing squad, and my family were personally involved. My paternal great-grandfather, the vice president James E. Smith of the Republic of Liberia, resigned shortly after President Roye was shot and killed by the opposition. While my father had come from a political family, Liberia's decades of corruption hindered his success. My father's death when I was sixteen left me with nowhere to turn; I became a child bride to an abusive man, the father of my two children. Leaving Liberia with my husband for the States meant I was to fend for my own future, my children, and that of my baby sister. In America, I heard my grandmother's words saying that education was the key to a better future and her stories of the doctors and lawyers our family produced, people that I had known and respected. I worked my way through college and graduate school always with my daughter's voice, encouraging me to go as far as I could, never letting me forget my life's dreams. I did not learn time management skills from a book; I learned about it going to school, raising my family, and working full-time. While my employer, Ernst & Young, paid for my graduate education, the funding was cut off when I was made redundant. One more hurdle, but nothing compared to surviving civil war, poverty, abuse, and death threat back home. Escape was well worth the challenges and prejudice I experienced working in America in the 1980s as an African woman. I take to heart Nelson Mandela's counsel that as a person of color many may seek to sabotage your future, so it is more important to make your enemies your friends, to work with them, rather than feeling bitter. I too, have developed a 'toughness' over many years of being an African woman professional in a male-dominated world. While I have spent most of my adult life in the US, I divided my time between New York, Liberia, and South Africa, with professional responsibilities in each place. Having traveled throughout Africa, Europe, and the US, I have seen these places within the context of my purpose, building upon my extensive education in business, bringing clarity to my understanding of creative ways that we might seek to address global economic relationships with Africa. With every step in these fantastic places, despite the dizzying array of their individual histories, I have found my path with increasing clarity. Liberia did not begin, of course, with the repatriation of enslaved Americans. There were already well-established Indigenous groups in the area with their own talents and experiences. Relationships had to be built between these newly repatriated brothers and sisters and the dream of a new African country for all. This very same spirit of diversity is echoed through the words of Gregory of Nyssa, who spoke of unity in diversity with distinctions between persons not impairing the oneness of our nature. I embody this sense of diversity, which I will bring to future academic projects, working to instill this celebration of diversity in all with whom I work. The DBA program at XXXX, focusing on strategy, is more than simply a logical progression for my academic career. While I have maintained a conceptual continuity in my academics, with each degree leading to the next, the DBA program will enable me to conduct research into organization at the highest educational level possible. Given your program's unsurpassed access to the most relevant information, facilities, and extra-university connections, I will have extensive opportunities to apply research to contemporary issues, including those faced by Liberia. I bring with me to the study of organizational behavior rich and diverse professional experiences from working in law firms, a city government, private consultancy firms, leading information technology initiatives, as well as having written on health care policy analysis for my master's thesis. There is a firm connection between my future and that of Liberia. Africa has been called the next global economic frontier. To be successful on that frontier, I will need to educate myself to the highest level possible, conducting intensive research into the topics that will have the most significant relevance to my career plans and directions. In time, I hope to develop an institute to generate global business strategies in connection with Africa. I envision this organization as headquartered in South Africa or Nigeria. I hope to flesh out the structure of this institute by developing ongoing alliances with Africa. I hope to embark on doctoral research that will help me to chart a course that is successful at obtaining creative sources of funding, as well as strategies for dealing with political challenges. In the last eighteen months, I have completed a great deal of work that has built a foundation of experience from which to proceed with my long-term plans. While my consulting firm is now entering its fourth year of operation, business only remains successful as long as I secure projects from NGOs, USAID, EU, and UNDP. Without working within the security of these relationships, I fear the firm would face difficulties getting projects from the Liberian government, especially given that I refuse to participate in corrupt practices. My firm now operates in Liberia, as well, after I secured a 20-year lease from the Catholic Diocese of a two-acre beachfront Vatican Embassy property to build a 30-50 room boutique and hotel for domestic and international accommodation. Most importantly, the project will create much-needed jobs for the local Liberians. While my hotel project faces ongoing challenges in finding sufficient financial backing, ironically, a community development project I began in Liberia with my own money has flourished. I am genuinely proud of my efforts and feel that I have made significant contributions to the revitalization of my community. Liberians need to be led out of poverty to viable, sustainable futures and instilled with the spirit of entrepreneurship, thus creating the conditions for genuine economic independence, and becoming a model for other African countries. I want to be a credible leader for Liberia with a proven record. In this way, I hope to help to lead Liberia away from its corrupt past, working to create a more compassionate, law-abiding, transparent nation. I plan to work extremely hard to ensure the continuation of creative thought and action. I hope to have a distinguished career in the classroom as a lecturer, or professor, staying abreast of the most exciting, real-world experiences. I look forward to publishing my research on the future of creative curriculum development and guiding research projects that will bring the most significant benefit to progressive causes. I am attracted to the diversity of your program, seeing it as a reflection of the same spirit of diversity Gregory of Nyssa spoke of centuries before, united in its mission for the progress of individuals who will go on to be change agents. I look forward to the opportunity to develop myself as a creative leader for Africa's future. Your time and consideration are appreciated, and I eagerly await a personal interview. - Social Work & Women's Studies Personal Purpose Statement
I am a young woman from Tokyo who has lived in Michigan for the last 13 years, after having lived and studied in Japan for four years, with one in Brazil and five in Texas. I am writing this letter on behalf of my application to the MSW/Women's Studies Dual Degree Program at XXXX University. Now twenty-three, I love learning and exploring new things. I graduated from the University of XXXX in April of 2007 with my first dual degree, my B.A. in Psychology in addition to Women's Studies. Being a woman is foremost in my life, and I think women's issues should stand at the center of social work reform and direct how this should transpire along theoretical and political lines that are favorable to women and children. I look forward to becoming ever-more creative in contributing to the debate from a womanist perspective. Therefore, my first choice for graduate study is XXXX University MSW & MA in Women's Studies Dual Degree Program. I am most passionate about social issues and social work in the context of gender and ethnicity. Our society is oppressive to people that are not white, male, hetero, and rich. I want to spend my life struggling against this oppression as a social work professional who takes it upon herself to care for the weaker members of society who have little power and little voice, inspiring and empowering them to assert their rights and protect and advance their interests. My long-term goal is to someday create my own non-profit organization to empower women from all backgrounds, helping them to feel safe and appreciated, and learn the kinds of modern-day survival skills that can enhance their quality of life and reinforce their inner strength, especially women of color who have historically had less access to economic power than men. I want to become a professional therapist with excellent preparation in the core materials, theories, and methodologies. I have always wanted to belong to an area that embraced women and believed that assisting them in bringing new life into this world would be one of the most satisfying jobs I could be involved with. Although my passion for saving lives and assisting clients has not diminished, it gradually became apparent that I was not suited for a career as a nurse. While I have tremendous respect and admiration for people who choose to devote their lives as nurses, I realized that working in a hospital setting would be too impersonal for my disposition and gifts. I am convinced that the more in-depth psychological interaction that characterizes the social work experience is a better fit for my personality and individual skills. This is why I transferred from the nursing program after a year and a half of college and ventured into psychology and women's studies. The more educated I became about discrimination, such as sexism, racism, homophobia, etc., the more involved I became in these issues, and the greater my desire to contribute to these areas. At this point, I discovered the Social Work option to harness my abilities to the professional goals of supporting women and serving as an ally in the struggle for progressive social change, therapeutic recovery, and the healing that can result from counseling. I have been active for the last couple of years with various social organizations that address my concerns in the pursuit of my dream, including SafeHouse, SAPAC, and the XXXX Office. My goal in life is to help others and make this world a better place for future generations. Participating in this struggle is the best way to live and it makes life enormously rewarding. I want to touch the lives of people in need daily. Whether that involves smiling at a stranger on the street or having a deep and intimate conversation with a friend recovering from an abusive relationship, I will always aspire to influence the lives of people around me positively. I want to have the privilege of reaching out to women who are struggling to survive the trauma of a sexual assault. I want to be able to reach out to a man that others have taunted because of his sexual orientation. I want to reach out to children who are underprivileged and starving for love and affection. And because of my education in psychology and women's studies, along with my involvement with numerous organizations throughout the community, I am a strong applicant for your MSW program, mainly because of my vast determination to make my goal a reality. The dual degree program in Social Work and Women's Studies at XXXX University is the best place to prepare myself for reaching my professional goals. Thank you for considering my application. - MSW Social Work Personal Purpose Hispanic Military
I am a woman of Hispanic heritage, born in the Dominican Republic and resident in the United States since the age of ten. I speak English and Spanish. I hold a BS degree in Industrial Engineering Technology and a BA degree in Modern Languages (Spanish) with a minor in Business Management. I am the first person in my family to graduate from college and am proud to have done so and to have taken advantage of the opportunities that have been available to me. I have never formally studied Social Work and it may be unusual for someone with my academic and professional background to apply for this program. My interest in Social Work was initially fired by my experiences in the Army. During my service, which included time in Kosovo, I witnessed distress among soldiers arising from post-traumatic stress, anxiety, and depression. Two military colleagues required help whilst we served in Kosovo, both suffered bereavements of close relatives whilst far from home and suffered depression and stress as a result. I witnessed successful interventions in these cases to provide these soldiers with ways of coping and regaining their former confidence and joy in living. It was then that I became aware of the work of specialist Social Workers dedicated to helping soldiers and their families and it occurred to me then that this was a wonderful way to spend a working life. The seed was planted. When I left the army, I decided that I would help others, if not professionally, then as a volunteer. I resumed my career but have spent a significant amount of my spare time in volunteer activities. I have worked in a Women’s Shelter, helping in practical ways, with listening and with doing anything that was useful for the clients. I have worked in a homeless shelter providing general help to residents. Currently I act as a volunteer with an organization that represents the interests of abused and neglected children in court. I have been trained by a non-profit organization called CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) to act as an advocate for children in the courts. The children concerned have suffered abuse or neglect and the courts seek to have them safely and permanently homed. I act as a friend to the child and as a factfinder reporting directly to the judge. I am required to thoroughly research the child’s background, to speak for the child in court and to assist the court and child towards a swift and appropriate conclusion. My voluntary work has been another, and incredibly significant, formative experience in my life and has provided me with great satisfaction, indeed joy. A successful outcome is life-changing for an underprivileged and deserving child. The other successes in my life have been dwarfed by those obtained in doing this work that positively changes the lives of others. The children have acted as examples of resilience, patience, and humor in the face of always difficult, and sometimes extremely distressing, situations that have been inspirational to me. I have interacted with Social Workers during this work and have acquired an understanding of their role. It has also demonstrated to me how different providers and organizations interact efficiently to reach early and desirable conclusions. My volunteer activity compounded my passion for becoming a professional Social Worker. I am aware of how situations calling for professional intervention are often complex and that the complexities may not be immediately apparent, that careful and sensitive investigation is required to define a problem and identify viable solutions. I believe that my military service, voluntary work, and my recent management experience has provided me with opportunities to develop a balanced view of social work and its challenges. I know that along with a mature, genuinely caring, and positive attitude, it is also necessary to be realistic in one's goals and the goals that we set for our clients in the world of Social Work. I possess these characteristics and long to become a professional, highly effective Social Worker. I have five years of management experience and related training which will also help me to excel in social work. Successful management calls for maturity, a realistic attitude towards people, good planning skills, kindness shown to staff people and taking a genuine interest in their personal welfare and professional progress. Being a manager also requires good observational skills and the ability to recognize the potential for problems before they arise. I hope to work with soldiers and their families as a Social Worker. I am personally aware of the pressures arising from separation from families, the need to regularly re-adjust to new localities and people, exposure to physical danger, the eventual need to successfully re-integrate into civilian life and the many other unusual demands of military life. I can relate directly to the problems suffered by soldiers and their families and will be able to draw upon my own, similar, experiences in assisting them. Military life also teaches and requires successful teamwork. I was regarded as a good ‘team player’ with a readiness to share and to assist. I regard this too as relevant to success in an MSW program. In addition to my experience of being initially raised in another cultural environment and subsequently adjusting to a new one, I have worked with people of many diverse backgrounds and cultures in the Army and in subsequent employment. I have also travelled widely in Europe and in the Caribbean. I have no difficulty in relating well to others whatever their heritage or background. My own background was financially modest, and I would hope to be an example to others who share this background of what can be achieved in the course of my future work. It is my intention, having completed the program, to apply the skills acquired by returning to the Army Reserve and serve as a Social Work Officer. It is clear to me that the Army does an excellent job of turning civilians into effective soldiers, but I am yet to be convinced that they are as good at turning soldiers into successful civilians and it is my hope to assist in identifying and implementing ways of doing so. I intend to specialize in working with soldiers returning from active deployment as I am aware that they often suffer ‘hidden wounds’ which may not be manifested until sometime after the return to a more normal environment. My ultimate ambition is to head a Social Work Department in a VA hospital or other military facility. I would hope to undertake research during the program within a military environment and specifically in the areas of Post Traumatic Stress and particularly as it affects female soldiers. As I understand Social Work, it is ‘all about people’ and involves forming positive relationships with people as an advisor, advocate, counselor, or listener with the end of helping them to live their lives more successfully and by helping them to find practical and successful solutions to their problems. I also understand that reaching successful resolutions often involves interaction with families, friends and other relevant parties and organizations. I believe that I have the personal qualities required of an effective Social Worker. My voluntary work, military background and management training and experience enable me to bring relevant skills and knowledge to the master's program and I look forward to sharing these with my class. Most importantly, I would bring a genuine and deeply felt desire to help others by obtaining the necessary training and knowledge to do so. I know that I can benefit from the program and share those benefits with others in my future career as a Social Worker. Thank you for considering my application for the master's program in Social Work. MSW Social Work Personal Purpose Hispanic Military
- I/O Industrial Organizational Psychology PHD Purpose
As a 32-year-old, highly motivated, self-starting organizational coach who is soon to be graduating with honors with an M.A. in Management from the University of XXXX. I am an ideal candidate for the Industrial-Organizational Psychology PhD program at your school. Understanding the intricate patterns of human motivation in the workplace has been the focus of my coaching business and has given me a burning desire to conduct further research to contribute to the profession of organizational development and to the scholarly literature in this field. As I realized my need to continue my education and began searching for a PhD program that would help me to reach my personal and professional goals, I became convinced that XXXX University, because of its excellent reputation and practical format, is my first choice for continued graduate study. The convenience of studying in Los Angeles, where I already live and own my business, will allow me to become fully immersed and make an active contribution to the many facets of XXXX's academic and professional network. My intense interest in this field goes back to my first job after college as a marketing associate in a bank. As a young executive, I was initially thrilled by the prospect of wearing a suit to work every day but Friday, driving my jet-black sports coupe and playing the role of Charlie Sheen from Wall Street. I felt like I was on top of the world and had become everything I ever thought I wanted to be, but I hated my job. I soon became disenchanted and left to work in something much less glamorous but more fulfilling, as an automobile claims adjuster. I genuinely enjoyed this job. I worked hard at negotiating settlements with attorneys, writing estimates at body shops and traveling to locations in Alabama that I appreciated getting to know. I had a company issued laptop, Jeep and cell phone and my coworkers were great. Once again, I was on top of the world! However, one day when my stockbroker friend asked me about my future career plans, I realized that I had never given it much thought. For the next few months, I explored the possibility of becoming a manager. In fact, my manager and the regional manager had expressed their interest in expanding my leadership role on the team. As I looked at the necessary managerial and supervisory responsibilities, I realized that there was little opportunity for growth in this very structured, task-oriented position. It was then that I began to seriously take stock of myself. I started asking myself what it was that I really enjoyed about my job. What was it that got me out of bed in the morning and into the office? I soon realized that the most fulfilling part of my job was applying my knowledge and ability in the training of new hires. Most of these new employees were younger than me and fresh out of college. I loved learning why they took this job, hearing about what they had studied and asking them what their real career goals were. I enjoyed discovering with them the various alternatives that they could explore to do what they really wanted to do in the future. Often, I was able to encourage these new hires to leave this job and pursue their dream while they were still young and mobile, or to stay and develop into top notch adjusters. The greatest reward for me was understanding something clearly at last in their eyes when they finally got it! Throughout this time, I became fascinated by one theme that pervaded each organization for which I had worked: a lack of genuine motivation. It seemed that the leadership of the organizations that I had worked for, including XXXX company, expected that employees were to be self-motivated. But most employees were there for the paycheck and little else. I remember thinking to myself that it would not be that difficult to make the employees happy; all they really asked for was a little respect, to be kept in the loop and to feel appreciated. When I left the auto claims position to run my father's successful real estate appraisal business, I realized that I missed working with individuals to help them to identify their motivators and their definition of success and I missed helping them to go on to achieve that success. I realized that I genuinely enjoyed coaching and understanding employee motivation. This was my first foray into the field of organizational psychology. I had begun to feel the need for further education and specialization. After my tentative entrance into the undergraduate university scene, I was surprised at this new desire growing within me to acquire more knowledge to be able to help employees and organizations become more successful. After high school, I was not sure that I even wanted to go to college. I initially enrolled because I love to learn, if only for the sake of learning, and at that time it was better than getting a job. After starting out in a community college, I later transferred to a four-year school and started all over again. Yet, I still lacked motivation to really do my best I was busy enjoying my job as a bartender at a nice restaurant with an excellent manager and great coworkers. Then, one night as I was watching my coworkers it dawned on me that they were all already in their late 20's and were still waiting tables, still needing to have a roommate to live in an average apartment in a very average part of town. Suddenly I had found my motivation! At this point, I decided to enroll for the first time in the summer quarter at my school, XXXX University Los Angeles, taking a full-time load. I did astonishingly well, earning a 4.0 GPA! I was excited and felt that I was ready to move on with the rest of my life. I went on to earn my degree in Business Administration with a concentration in marketing. I chose my MA program because of its focus on group dynamics, leadership, and organizational communication instead of the traditional hard business skills of finance and accounting. I have flourished in this program and plan to graduate in May 2008 with a GPA of over 3.8. It has been my desire to become more involved in organizational communication and training. After reading articles by Marshall Goldsmith and others in the publication Leadership Excellence, I began to formulate a plan whereby I would focus on working with individuals whom, I consider, are the basic building blocks of every organization. I decided to become a coach. I enrolled in a coach training program and have begun to quickly realize my potential in this field. Since beginning my own business, I have coached a wide range of individuals from unfulfilled stay-at-home mothers to corporate level managers within large organizations such as XXXX. I am beginning to expand my reach into small-to-medium sized businesses. My own research has led me to believe that many small business executives would welcome a low-cost forum in which they could meet with other small businesspeople to share challenges and successes. To this end, I am currently working on writing a series of workshops that will be available over the Internet as seamless multi-media presentations. Over time, I hope to create several leadership and communication programs that I can package and sell over my website. As I develop these skills, my desire is to offer these workshops as a public speaker. I am at a point in my life where it is necessary to hone my academic skills through scholarly research in the areas of industrial-organizational psychology that are of greatest interest to me. Eventually, I would like to become a published author and scholarly authority on employee motivation, making a significant contribution to society through my writings on this subject. One of the areas of my research interest is that of organizational communication since it can be said that a lack of communication is often a driving force behind negative workplace attitudes and behaviors. When employees feel that they are not in the loop they will usually draft their own internal stories, leading to misunderstandings and discontent. For example, policy changes may require changes in organizational structure that may alter job descriptions and expectations. However, if the reasons for these changes are not effectively communicated, employees will begin to speculate on the causes which can have a negative effect on morale or make employees feel unappreciated. It has been estimated that employees spend more than 50% of their time communicating, either face-to-face, over the phone or through email (Hollingworth, 2007). Some of the key elements of communication are clarity, honesty, and timeliness since timely, honest, and open communication, rooted in good leadership, will make the difference between high and low employee morale (Traboulay, 2008). Leadership obviously has a massive impact upon organizational communication and motivation. Great organizations have great leadership that facilitates solid communication, thereby motivating employees as they understand and believe in the vision. Thus, leadership development is crucial so that organizations can turn managers into effective leaders who cultivate solid communication skills and build up high employee morale. Although I have developed a successful coaching practice, I am now ready to take it to the next level. This implies acquiring specialized skills and knowledge in research methods and statistics, a deeper understanding of organizational theory and a broader gamut of organizational consulting interventions through a program such as the Industrial-Organizational Psychology doctoral program at XXXX University's XXXX School of Management. I am impressed by XXXX's solid reputation in the field as evidenced by a high success rate and as expressed to me by people that attended and graduated from the XXXX School of Professional Psychology in the past and have gone on to rewarding careers. I am particularly interested in the fact that the coursework is tailored to include both practical field experience as well as providing a solid academic foundation. Although I would like to expand upon my experience in organizational consulting, I am also seeking a PhD because of the research component that will allow me to focus on my interest in what makes people tick, principally their attitudes and behaviors in the workplace. A PhD in Industrial-Organizational Psychology will allow me to expand upon my studies in group dynamics and communication. XXXX University's unique emphasis on applied work in the field with a strong academic grounding, its reputation in the field of Organizational Psychology and its many other positive characteristics, such as boasting some of the most diverse campuses in the country, make XXXX School of Management my choice for continued graduate studies. Despite a slow start to my career and personal growth, I am certain that I am well on my way to success. My ardent desire to learn, complemented by strong graduate showing, will prove me worthy of candidacy in the PhD of Industrial-Organizational Psychology at XXXX University. - SLP Personal Purpose Statement, Saudi
Throughout my four years of study, subsequent clinical internship, and current job as a Teaching Assistant in the Speech Therapy and Audiology Department at King Saud Bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KSAU-HS) in Saudi Arabia, I have taken advantage of every opportunity to increase my knowledge base, further develop my clinical skills, and gain exposure to a broad variety of interesting cases and patient conditions. I enjoy pathologist-patient interaction enormously as well as the problem-solving challenges that present themselves in our profession. I am convinced that my experience, dedication, elevated level of motivation, and refined work ethic will enable me to hit the ground running in your program and distinguish myself as a zealous and engaging graduate student. There is a chronic lack of awareness in Saudi Arabia of the need to help people, especially children, with speech and language difficulties, how best to help them, what treatments are most effective and why, etc. The great need that exists in my country is the single greatest driving force leading me to make this choice for a vocation. If accepted and given the opportunity to complete your program, I will be able to utilize the skills and knowledge gained during my studies towards the master's degree in SLP to raise awareness of the important challenges that we face in Saudi Arabia and to help as many of those who suffer as possible. There is nothing that I love more than a challenge and I have been drawn to the field of SLP because it is highly demanding, requiring the design of a development management pathway for each patient and carefully observing and recording improvements in their quality of life. I have been able to help my patients express themselves better and communicate more successfully with those around them, which is an extremely rewarding experience because it is the greatest gift that one can bestow upon another. I have observed the impact of communication disorders on social and academic skills, but also seen the improvement that can be achieved when these are managed appropriately. I enjoy working with children because of the life-long positive effects that are gained because of the successful management of childhood communication-related issues, and the creativity I so much enjoy exercising in the development of their treatment plans. To further improve my communication and interactive skills with children, I have taken opportunities to volunteer as a teaching assistant in an international school in London, UK, as well as locally here in a school in Jeddah, KSA. I have had the intense privilege of interacting with children of varied cultural backgrounds and at various stages of development, developing my problem-solving skills because of managing the behavior of large groups and adapting to challenging situations. I have acquired additional invaluable experience in the clinical setting through my internship at King Abdullah Medical City’s Hospital, King Abdulaziz Medical City’s Hospital, and in my current role as a part-time speech-language pathologist at the KSAU-HS associated National Guard Hospital (NGH). Being involved in the process of screening, assessing, and treating cases of communication disorders has strengthened my skills and abilities in many ways and in all aspects of practice, including documentation. Being fully fluent in English has been one of my strong points. Being exposed to a broad variety of cases such as swallowing, voice and articulation disorders, stuttering, language delay, speech and language issues related to cleft lip and palate, tracheostomies-related issues, and auditory verbal training has helped me to better develop my own interpersonal and communication skills, dealing not only with clients but also their families, specialists, professors, etc. My sense of responsibility has been heightened and I am now more professional, committed, and likely to take the initiative. I am eager to be at the forefront of research and development in SLP, particularly with respect to the context of the Arabic-speaking world to make a solid contribution in this area to my people and culture, especially in the case of our children. I have been proactive in keeping up to date with the latest research and developments in my field, attending conventions and workshops in addition to staying up late reading the literature most of the time. I have also taken several highly relevant online courses. In my current role as a Teaching Assistant at KSAU-HS, I am helping with two research projects in my field, Auditory Verbal Training and Cochlear Implantation, and Pediatric Swallowing. I look forward to very much improving my research skills as a graduate student in your program and to someday turning out my own highly significant research publications in the field. This is imperative to becoming a very competent SPL professional. I am also focused on my personal growth and development and have always been active as a volunteer in several different areas. For example, I am currently the chairperson of a Saudi book club that holds monthly meetings and discussions. Also, I was involved in the Saudi Entrepreneurs’ Program in 2011, serving as the production manager for my team. The project was successful, and my team won the award for “The Most Creative Idea”. These roles have improved my leadership as well as my communication skills. Having traveled to the USA and Europe several times, I am familiar with the diversity of cultures outside the Middle East and look forward to meeting new people and learning more about other cultures and societies during my graduate education. I feel this will enhance both my general life skills as well as my professional interpersonal skills. By earning my master's degree, I will be able to attain the position of lecturer at KSAU-HS and a speech-language pathologist at NGH. Thank you for considering my application. - MPH Epidemiology Personal Purpose Statement
My central professional dream in life is to become the finest and most distinguished interventional cardiologist—and a tireless advocate for public health advancement--in my city, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. I want to become recognized as a mover and shaker in medicine who helps to implement changes in our health care service delivery system that serve to reduce the ravages of heart disease in sustainable ways, primarily through public health education. Your especially distinguished MPH Program at XXXX University will serve me well as a springboard for a lifetime of achievements safeguarding and prolonging the lives of the inhabitants of Jeddah, and not just Saudi citizens, but our international resident population and guest workers as well. I am pleased to report that the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission fully sponsors me. Since April of 2014, I have been serving as an Associate Consultant in the Department of Internal Medicine at the XXXX Medical Complex in Jeddah. I was recently appointed to a supervisory position with respect to our clinics for government employees; this has entailed a thorough review and overhaul of our policy guidelines. I am also serving as Chair of our XXXX Committee resulting in additional administrative responsibility for which I am thankful as it provides me with extra experience in dealing with employees and patients, helping to make our work go smoothly in an environment that is as friendly as it is professional. The highlights of my career so far have included participation in our Rheumatology International Day in 2010 to educate people about Rheumatology disease and providing free screenings and consultations. I also participated in our Nephrology International Day in 2011. Jeddah is the KSA’s most international city, and home to large populations of foreigners from all over the world. I especially look forward to being trained at XXXX University because of your diverse student population from all over the world, learning from my peers as well as your distinguished faculty, from their examples and testimonies about the public health struggles that they face as well in their home countries. I look forward to exchanging ideas about our public health challenges on a global level, so that we can learn together; networking and collaborating, building ties that will last for a lifetime, sharing creative ideas for progressive evolution in the health care sectors in which we work. I have decided to give my life to public health in cardiology and interventional cardiology because I crave the challenge entailed in the struggle to drastically reduce the extremely high rates of heart disease and death suffered by Saudi Arabians. On one of the most memorable days of my life so far, I witnessed a patient who had an unsuccessful thrombolysis and was in severe pain and his life in great danger--just before the interventionist opened his blocked vessel. This is the kind of life-saving engagement that I crave and hope to someday make available to all patients in Saudi Arabia who need this treatment, irrespective of their migratory or economic status; in addition to keeping as many of our residents as I can from ending up in this position to begin with. I have cultivated an advanced understanding of biostatistics that enables me to evaluate the strength of the studies and to critique them creatively, especially with respect to epidemiology and its relationship to other risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Completing your program will help me to build tremendously on what I have learned so far, preparing me to make important contributions down the road to the practice of cardiology in the KSA in a way that enhances the efficacy of our public health structures. After earning my MPH Degree, I intend to apply for a residency program in Internal Medicine and then to also complete a fellowship in cardiology and interventional cardiology in the USA. Earning the MPH at XXXX University will guide me always in my approach and devotion to cardiology insofar as I learn to think as a scientist and policy designer about medical issues, as well as a cardiologist. I have a strict commitment and dedication to my work and a profound respect for my colleagues irrespective of their nationality, race, gender or religious beliefs and I want to personally build bridges between my country and the rest of the world as members of the global medical community. Jeddah city which is a portal city which receives people from all over the world, many of them heading for pilgrimage, and this has made me able to understand and deal with a vast variety of people with all diverse types of cultural customs, practices, and mentalities. After finishing medical school (2007), I spent 18 months in cardiology as a service resident at a large, state-of-the-art cardiology center with over 1500 Cath and three thousand Echo studies a year in addition to the electrophysiology lab. I had the privilege of working in the CCU for over 6 months where I was exposed to countless cardiac emergencies and learned how to manage the critically ill in a highly effective manner. Next, I was accepted to a residency program at the KFSH & RC, the ultimate state of the art tertiary care hospital in the Kingdom, where I have been treating a broad variety of diseases and a great diversity of patients. I was elected as Chief Resident for the final year of this residency providing me with the additional privilege of enhancing my teaching and leadership skills. I passed my final internal medicine board exam with honors, in third place nationwide (one of only ten honorary degree holders in the kingdom in 2013). I thank you for considering my application to your distinguished program. MPH Epidemiology Personal Purpose Statement #mph #epidemiology #personalstatement #purpose #examples #editing
- SLP Masters Personal Purpose Statement Sample, Audiology
I am a young Italian American woman who has grown up in New York City. The Education Department of the City of New York currently employs me. I earned my BA in Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology at Brooklyn College and hope to earn my master's degree in the same field devoting my life to the profession of Speech/Language Pathology. I am particularly dedicated to the study of neuro-motor communication and swallowing disorders, especially Parkinson ’s disease. My family has kept up their abilities in the Italian language despite generations here in the USA and like most of my family I am fluent in Italian. Now, I am taking full advantage of how similar Spanish is and working towards fluency in Spanish as well, motivated by the vast numbers of Spanish speakers in NYC. I am making rapid progress because my boyfriend is Puerto Rican, and my sister is married to a man from the Dominican Republic - the four of us spend a lot of time together speaking mostly Spanish. I work as a paraprofessional or teaching assistant for students with intellectual and physical disabilities, in NYC’s District XX, in a high school in a low-income neighborhood of Brooklyn called Sunset Park. My mostly Hispanic students, range across the Autism spectrum, some have Down’s syndrome, others are bipolar, and a few have been diagnosed with schizophrenia. Many of my students receive services like physical and speech therapy and I get to witness these services being provided firsthand. Among the professionals with whom I interact, the SLP strikes me as the one making the most salient contribution, given the fundamental importance of speech and communication for human interaction. Thus, this is the career that I also look forward to for the balance of my professional lifetime, helping people, especially children, in the most fundamental and sustainable way possible, learning to communicate effectively despite their limitations. I look forward to educating parents of children with communication issues, to harness their full support in the most effective ways. During my undergraduate work at Brooklyn College, I was fortunate to sit in on several speech evaluations. You could see the frustration and sadness behind these parents’ eyes as they looked on, their child innocently playing in the corner. The way that they spoke to the Speech Pathologist, with so much appreciation and gratefulness helped to convince me that this is what I want to spend my life doing, being able to look at a parent and tell them things will get better. Knowing that you are making a difference in someone’s life fills me up with so much purpose. The Speech Pathologist offers more than therapy, a shoulder to cry on and a listening ear, providing education and moral support to families. My younger sister Jessica, who I am especially close to, has been a major inspiration in my career choice. Throughout her life she has struggled with learning disabilities and speech delays. My mother noticed that something was amiss when she was only two years old. She went for many screenings and tests, resulting in a diagnosis of a language delay. My sister did not speak well until the age of five and did not begin reading until she was in the third grade. Now, Jessica is seventeen, starting her senior year of High School, and part of an early college program. When she graduates, she will not only have a High School diploma but an associate degree. She wants to pursue an education in nursing, working with premature babies in the NICU. Once, when I heard someone ask her why she wants to become a nurse specializing in the care of premature infants, she quickly replied, “Just because you are weak and sick now, doesn’t mean you can’t grow up strong, you just need help and people who believe in you.” Jessica is a shining example of what Early Intervention and Speech Therapy can do for a child. Her big sister would like to think that she has played a positive role in helping Jessica to grow and thrive. I have learned many things from Jessica’s struggle that will be of immense value to me in my chosen career and course of study. I am certain that I will be remembering and revisiting many of our issues as a graduate student and I look forward to sharing some of our experiences with my colleagues in your program. Thank you for considering my application. SLP Masters Personal Purpose Statement Sample #slp #mastersdegree #personalstatement #purpose #examples #editing
- MPH Personal Purpose Statement Examples, Indian Doctor
A very hard-working woman doctor from India, since 2015 I have been making a new home for myself in the USA and working hard to restart my career in health here in the USA. While I adore the practice of medicine, for a variety of reasons, I feel that my first career advancement should take place in Public Health. Thus, I hope to earn the MPH Degree in your especially distinguished program at XXXX University. Public health issues in my native India intrigued me even before I went to medical school and especially after the first year or two of my studies. A compassionate person, I have long grieved for the limitations that exist in India in our public health systems, the impoverished extent to which we are able to offer affordable care to the vast major of our people with the fewest resources. As a medical student, I was dismayed to realize how extraordinarily little was invested in India in Public Health Education, with little to no academic focus in this area at all except for brief mention as part of medical school curriculums. I moved with my Family to the USA in 2015 and I have worked alongside numerous physicians in both outpatient and inpatient settings. My work experience in the United States has broadened my horizons and helped me get oriented to the American healthcare system. Presentation of patients, charting and SOAP notes, electronic medical records, and extensive communication with medical and allied health staff have me ready to hit the ground running in your program with fresh experience to draw from. I have done extensive research in the past 6 months. one of my projects in my current position on the Rapid Response Team at my hospital is a quality improvement project. A physician with experience treating patients of extremely diverse backgrounds, I have also spent countless hours observing in a variety of clinics since I came to the USA in 2015. My goal is to serve as part of a core team in hospital management dedicated to bringing about endless improvements in the delivery of healthcare. My past 6 months have been especially enriching serving as an assistant and working alongside my mentor, Dr XXXX at St Francis Hospital, a renowned cardiologist, and esteemed academician. Our team has so far worked on two major research projects dealing with quality improvement. Projects. With each passing day I better understand the connection between research and practice, bringing it all together to improve global human health. I find myself extremely highly motivated as a result to give my utmost to the fullest possible immersion experience in the study of Public Health. - DrPH Public Health Personal Purpose Statement, African
A medical doctor from Nigeria and a naturalized American citizen since 2013, I completed my Master of Public Health Degree last year, 2015, with a GPA of 3.82. Now, I very much hope to be awarded the privilege of earning the DrPH Degree. I have always been a good student, which resulted in my receiving a full scholarship to medical school that covered all tuition and living expenses, awarded to only a handful. I have worked as a medical doctor for 17 years and a researcher for the past 2 years. I earned my MPH online and very much enjoy online learning; thus, I hope to earn my doctoral degree online as well. Since April of this year, 2016, I have been serving as a Postdoctoral Research Trainee at the XXXX in Jacksonville, Florida. Previously, I completed an internship here at Mayo in clinical research, from June through December of 2015. This recent, research-intensive experience will help me to hit the ground running and distinguish myself in your doctoral program. I could not be happier than I am at the XXXX Clinic, fully immersed in literature search methods, application for IRB approval, development of software for online surveys, data collection and export along with analysis of research data for developing a better understanding of clinical processes and health outcomes. Attending research project meetings is a special delight, as well as departmental journal club meetings where relevant medical journals in our different medical specialties are reviewed and discussed. My experience at the XXXX Clinic has included intensive training in clinical research presentation and publication, especially working with data from patients’ electronic records. Much of my time at one point, for example, was devoted to the development and maintenance of research databases for a project using Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) software, working alongside the biostatistician in the analysis of the data. While serving in the Obstetrics and gynecologic department as a resident doctor at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital in Nigeria, I developed a special passion for caring for people living with HIV/AIDS. This motivated me to serve as a volunteer coordinator for the activities of the United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief in my area. I provided health care services and anti-retroviral drug treatment to people living with HIV/AIDS including pregnant women, to try and prevent mother to child transmission of HIV. I especially enjoyed providing care to people living with HIV/AIDS because I was helping them to regain productive lives and a sense of purpose despite being HIV positive. Here at the XXXX Clinic Hospital, I have served as a volunteer with our Health Disparity Group providing outreach services to local communities, including diagnosis and nonsurgical treatment of diseases for adult patients. We refer patients to hospitals for management of complex conditions and advise them on diet, physical activity, hygiene, and disease prevention. Since I graduated from medical school in 1999 and began practicing medicine in 2000, I have learned a great deal from my professional engagement. I have contributed to society by providing public health services for the past 16 years of my life, including monitoring the health status of patients in order to identify and solve community health problems, diagnosing health problems in the community, and informing, educating, and empowering people with respect to health issues, providing them with the health education they need. I migrated to the United States after completing my residency training in Nigeria to join my wife who had already immigrated to the US. I enrolled in the MPH Program at the University of XXXX where I graduated with distinction in 2015. My training in the MPH Program has helped me to excel at the XXXX, especially as a volunteer with our Health Disparity Group since we are constantly engaged in a search for new, especially creative insights and innovative strategies to address health care issues, particularly – but not exclusively - as concerns underserved communities. If given the opportunity to study towards the Doctor of Public Health Degree (DrPH), I will be able to acquire a most comprehensive body of knowledge in the field of public health and develop the competencies that are necessary to optimally perform essential public health services. I hope to work as a public health leader here in the USA in an urban setting, providing direction for the improvement of public health services at the state or federal government level. It would be a special honor and the realization of my central professional dream to be selected at some point for service with an international organization such as the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or the World Health Organization (WHO). I am especially excited about the prospect of engaging in doctoral level research in maternal and infant mortality as it correlates with health disparity because I have witnessed a lot of health disparity resulting in maternal and infant mortality not only in Africa but also here in the United States. Thus, I want very much to contribute all that I can to reducing maternal and infant mortality both in the American inner city and internationally, with an eye towards eventual service in Africa. I am also keenly anxious to return to research in HIV/AIDS and STD prevention – also with an eye towards Africa, the continent of my birth which remains the epicenter of this disease. I take immense pride in being internet savvy which helps me to excel at online study. With over 15 years of experience in public health practice, I am very committed to finishing your program and moving into a leadership position in public health. There is a special need for black professionals as role models in medicine, particularly for young Black males in our inner city raised in at-risk neighborhoods. As a Black African man and a doctor, I am quite comfortable in the ‘hood’ and I have access that not all health professionals have. As a member of the Health Disparity Group at XXXX Hospital, I have increasingly had the opportunity to reach out for greater levels of responsibility and assume leadership roles on projects geared towards a reduction of disparities. Thus, I am confident that I will have success as a leader in public health practice. I have now finely honed my communication skills in American English, written as well as spoken, and have become an accomplished researcher in my MPH Program along with my ongoing experience with the XXXX Clinic. Thank you for considering my application to study for the Doctorate Degree in Public Health.
