As I write this, thousands of miles from my homeland of Nigeria, I think on the path that led me to Public Health. I often wonder when people talk of healthcare disparities, if they can ever truly grasp what it means, what crushing poverty entails, and even what an underdeveloped nation looks like. I was born and raised in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, a place where most people are suffering from one disease or another, conditions that are either unknown in the US, or are highly preventable. I never wondered who would help or raise awareness; I was that someone. To my mind, Public Health is the most important aspect of Medicine. It can help prevent and bring solutions to health issues like no other field. In the Niger delta region of Nigeria, multinational oil companies have polluted the rivers and stream used by ordinary people for their livelihood. The situation is dire. People cannot fish because of the omnipresent oil polluting the water, choking oxygen and sunlight from sustaining ecosystems. Compounding the problems are elevated illiteracy rates, and a general lack of preventative medicine and education results in rampant preventable diseases. The health system needs serious reform and the right management. Policy makers have failed to think long term and properly. My people are suffering from neglect in all spheres of their existence as humans, especially in the health sector. The outside world thinks of the ongoing plague of HIV/AIDS, but this is only one part of our massive set of issues. Nigeria currently has one of the highest infection rates of HIV/AIDS infection in the world and the trend continues. This is a result of poor policy and short-sightedness. I am adamant that change must come. My studies in public health will go a very long way to helping me grasp the proper concepts and tools needed to work with the government to bring sustainable solutions to problems besieging the Niger Delta. I have lived in Russia for over five years studying medicine but that has not undermined my love for public health, Diseases like Malaria, microfilaria infection and other preventable diseases affect many people in this region. Through my active volunteerism, distributing mosquito nets and repellant in Warri South, I have seen tangible success from even these humble efforts. Change can come, and it need not be with an astronomical “price tag”. Public health issues touch almost every family in my homeland, and sadly, my family is not an exception. I come from a large family of 10 children and my eldest sister is dead today due to HIV/AIDS. I know that if the health sector was better funded, better equipped and better managed with clear and effective policies, this kind of suffering could be avoided. I have observed numerous diagnostic and treatment sessions in both English and Spanish and I was active in my student Speech and Hearing Society while completing my BA in Speech Language Pathology at Brooklyn College, graduating September 2015. Having been born and raised in a tiny rural village in the backwoods of Haiti, I am aware of hardship, which has made a dedicated and compassionate professional. At 39, I want very much to finally complete my dream of graduate school so that I can help my people, first those who have made it to New York and later those who remain on our tragic island. The recent earthquake, now aggravated by flooding, has played a major role in my desire to advance my education to be able to help. One of fourteen brothers and sisters, two of whom died in childhood due to unhygienic health conditions, my parents were literally dirt-poor tenant farmers. While my father finished the eighth grade; my mother was illiterate and could barely scrawl her name. I grew up in grinding, barefoot poverty in a commonplace shack with a tin roof. The broiling tropical sun made it swelter inside. The torrential rains poured through our leaky roofs and the streets outside became a sea of mud in the rainy season. Since we frequently did not have enough to eat, I learned firsthand what it is to experience the wrenching pangs of hunger. These challenging circumstances helped to forge my character and make me a stronger person, as well as one who can genuinely empathize with the suffering of others. When I was fifteen, my father obtained a green card and we immigrated to the United States and moved into the tenement slums of “little Haiti” in upper Manhattan. I entered high school not knowing a word of English. The school was infested with gangs and a far cry from the homey environment of my village in Haiti. Through much struggle and effort, I was able to master English, although I did not graduate from high school until I was twenty. After finishing high school, I enrolled in and completed a home health aide training program. I took the fall semester of 1990 off and worked full time to save for college tuition. I first enrolled in XXXX College and then transferred to XXXX Community College where I earned an AAS in dental hygiene. After that, I entered XXXX University, obtaining a BS in biology. I have known all along that I wanted to become a health care professional, and, thus, chose to study in these fields, ultimately preparing me for graduate study. Seven thousand, two hundred sixty-two miles I traveled as an 18-year-old international student from Kuwait to pursue a career in speech-language pathology in the United States of America. A young Arab woman from a traditional home in Kuwait, since my arrival, I have learned to celebrate diversity with great relish. Kuwait is small and big in its values, I always utilized opportunities to help people. The desire to help others was one of the reasons that led me to choosing this major, to build a career supporting people to better their lives, especially children. From a young age, I have loved children’s existence in my life and around me. I enjoy playing, interacting, and taking care of them. I feel like the entire world is smiling when I am with them. They love me because I am playful and give them their share in the conversation to express their opinions and ideas. Because I like children and I want to help others, I wanted to become a doctor, perhaps a pediatrician, to help people heal and get better. But I did not see this field as a good field for two reasons. From my perspective, doctors treat people until they are medically stable, and their treatment is fixed more than sustained. For example, a doctor could treat a child’s adenoids surgically, but this alone will not rehabilitate the child’s speaking abilities. I see SLP as a bridge between medical etiologies and rehabilitation services and that is what makes this field so uniquely exciting and so special. In 1990, Kuwait was invaded by the Iraqi Army. Overnight, they invaded the entire country. They burned many oil fields and houses. It was said that the people who will be impacted are those of the future generation. Twenty-seven years later, there are more and more children and adults being diagnosed with genetic and neurological disorders such as Down Syndrome. This tragedy impacted the development of my country and thus today there are many adults and children who need SLP services. Unfortunately, however, because of the shortage of professionals that are eligible to provide these services, those adults and children do not receive adequate attention. The awareness of these services is growing as much as the need to receive services is growing. In Kuwait, people used to believe that a child/adult who stutters is born like that and that there is nothing they can do to help the child/adult. But after graduating and coming back to Kuwait and working in a rehabilitation clinic, I have seen families in and outside of the clinic taking about stuttering and how it is a condition that can be treated through rehabilitation services. One of the best sides of this profession is it has a positive impact on the life of a person with a communication disorder. From the past and until this moment, I have the desire to change someone’s life for the better and observe the happiness and comfort results. Loving life led me to want to become a doctor at first, but I found myself better in a different role making similar impact: providing speech-language therapies where I give birth to a positive change that lighten the life of an individual to have a better quality of life. As more people are being educated about the speech and language disorders and therapy services, more and more people are being referred to speech-language therapy clinics. In Kuwait, and because of the lack of trained and qualified speech-language professionals, eligible speech-language therapy services are limited. Working in Kuwait as a pediatric speech-language pathology assistant gave me an insight in the needs of my community. The population we serve at the clinic is so diverse. We lack standardized resources that are tested on Arabic speakers with diverse backgrounds. Because of the lack of standardized testing, no diagnoses can be official. Observing the need of my community further encouraged me to pursue a graduate degree in speech-language pathology. I choose to complete my studies in the United States for many reasons. One of them being that US has a diverse population: refugees, immigrants, and others. Therefore, I would benefit from getting externships where I can interact with diverse populations. It is like a ripple effect where the positive change in the life of someone continues to spread to an enormous result of improving the life of the community of that individual. Due to the shortage of services in speech-language pathology in Kuwait, information about the field is hard to come by. As I researched and studied more about communication disorders and the impact on people’s lives, my interest and passion continued to bloom. I grew up believing that I would find my greatest success by helping others; thus, this area of speech-language pathology will help me thrive with passion and compassion. I dedicated my time to expand my horizon of knowledge by utilizing a variety of opportunities beyond academia to gain relevant experiences in the field of speech-language pathology. To highlight a few, I actively volunteered with the school’s National Student Speech Language and Hearing Association (NSSLHA) chapter. Through this experience, I have worked with school-aged children with Autism as well as adults with Parkinson’s disease. I have encountered situations where I tailored my communication to meet the individual’s level of communication. For instance, when working with a child with autism who is hard of hearing, I used my proficiency in American Sign Language to communicate with him. Applying this skill with the knowledge learned about total communication provided a supportive environment for the child to communicate. Also, I worked as a research assistant during my undergraduate studies which allowed me to work one-on-one with infants that are at risk for autism spectrum disorders (ASD). This opportunity strengthened my clinical skills in recognizing potential signs of ASD. It also strengthened my research abilities specifically in research process and data collection. I currently work as a pediatric speech-language pathology assistant at Children’s Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center (CERC) which is supporting my readiness for the clinical practicum in graduate school. Being able to lead supervised sessions from A to Z gave me an insight of the regular routine of a clinician, built up my confidence in treating certain deficits such as deficits in pragmatic skills and improved my understanding of different disorders such as Williams Syndrome. I learned how to adapt the session materials, communicate and interact in a culturally appropriate way. I learned how to collaborate with other professionals (e.g., physiotherapist and psychologist) to provide effective therapy in a joined session. This skill is helpful for graduate school because it will prepare me to work effectively with clients from different cultures and ethnicity backgrounds as well as other health care providers (i.e., physicians, doctors) during my externships. Therefore, these opportunities equipped me with the necessary skills to become a dedicated practitioner, reflective scholar and responsible citizen. They helped me to become exceptionally motivated for graduate work. I enjoy playing basketball, swimming, running, and dancing. My hobbies and interest in being active is helpful during graduate school, because they will help me deliver therapy that consists of activities that are active. Because of the experiences that I had, I have continued to develop my interest in working with the pediatric population, treating children with neurological and genetic disorders, especially children on the Autism Spectrum. After completing my master’s, I would like to work with children in a medical setting and seek opportunities to deliver international speech-language services to children in under developing countries. Following that, I plan to attain a clinical doctorate degree to expand my clinical expertise in developing diverse therapy approaches that accommodate children’s needs globally I hope my services to be fruitful for the people I serve as I expect them to be for me. I started on this journey with the simple desire to help children with communication disorders. That desire, however, has now become my life’s passion. I hold a bachelor's degree in criminology and anticipate graduation from the MA program in Human Services with a specialization in Marriage and Family in March 2011. My father was a servicemember who fought in Vietnam. He came home suffering from ‘flashbacks’, anger, and a heavy drinking problem. He never sought any kind of counseling or other treatment which was not, at that time, routinely available anyway. Eventually our family life disintegrated. My purpose in applying to join this program is to learn how to help prevent this from happening to other military families like ours through trained interventions. I am an active-duty military spouse and have personal experience with the special challenges faced by those who serve and their families. I chose Criminology as my undergraduate major because of a curiosity concerning what drives people to crime and a disregard for others. These studies were relevant to the volunteer work I was undertaking in a domestic shelter and later voluntary work with victims of violence and sexual assault in the military community, acting as an advocate for victims with whom I spent a substantial amount of time. I decided then that I wanted to be involved in early intervention to prevent these problems arising rather than reacting only after the event. To be involved in prevention rather than post-event cures, I took on the role of a Prevention and Education Specialist as part of the Counseling Service Team aboard the Marine Corps Base Camp at XXXX. This role enabled me to work towards prevention of domestic violence, sexual assault and suicide. I was also trained in combat operational stress awareness. I saw, in some cases, a close resemblance in symptoms demonstrated by soldiers returning from active duty to those of my own father. I have run several marathons during my life. This activity requires many hours of training and dedication to be successful. My life has been something like undertaking a series of marathons. Sometimes I have not prepared sufficiently, believing that things were more easily achieved than was the case. This was true of my studies for my bachelor's degree. Frankly my results were not ‘stellar’ however, following that experience, I decided that I must regard my studies for my master's degree as one more marathon and one that would be prepared for and undertaken with focus, dedication and diligence to get to my goal. My GPA now stands at 3.8, I have worked very hard to overcome an earlier lack of focus and dedication. I will give my studies in the program ‘everything I have’ as my objectives are wholeheartedly and passionately desired. I would particularly draw attention to the subject of the master's degree that I am now about to complete as I regard this as highly relevant to the MSW program. My objectives are to use the training provided by the master's program to work with those scarred by their experiences of war and their families to minimize the effect of the stresses and mental ‘wounds’ affecting soldiers and veterans. In short, to stop the war continuing in minds and in homes. I am sure that the program will go far in equipping me to do so. I am especially interested in undertaking research in combat operational stress and the impact of deployments on military families and into domestic violence among the military. I am convinced that I possess the personal qualities necessary to become an extremely effective social worker. I am genuinely sympathetic to those in distress without being unrealistic or sentimental. I am considered to have excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills. I am a good organizer and motivator. I am a confident public speaker and enjoy debating. I enjoy working within a team and like to share information and views with others. Not least, I know the value of a smile and I have a sense of humor. I have a mixed ethnicity and spend leisure and working time with people from many different cultural backgrounds and ethnicities. I relate well to others regardless of culture and positively enjoy the interesting contrasts that cultural diversity brings. I know that the demonstration of cultural awareness and sensitivity will be essential to my success in the program and as a social worker. I always hoped to be able to make direct and beneficial differences to the lives of others. I came to speech therapy because of problems suffered by a young relation, Elias. Because of his difficulties in obtaining an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment, I became aware of a shortage of speech therapy expertise in my country of Saudi Arabia. I decided to become part of the solution to the problem by acquiring a qualification and experience in the field. I have never regretted my decision. My goal is to become an expert practitioner, to undertake research and to share my passion by teaching. I have accrued clinical and research experience over the last two years, in my home country. It is an indication of my potential that I was also offered the opportunity to teach at such an early stage. My training has been supplemented by attendance at various symposia and conventions. I met XXXX, lecturer at Queen’s College, NY, on the flight to the ASHA 2015 convention. A lengthy conversation ended with her telling me that it was clear to her that I had made the right choice in life, this provided an enormous boost to my confidence. My fascination with language and communication stems from childhood experiences and observations. Our family had moved from Vietnam to Australia before I was born. As I grew up, I watched my mother struggle to acquire fluency in English. She succeeded but it was a long, hard journey complicated by the fact that Vietnamese is very different from English and other European languages in structure and the tonal basis of Vietnamese. My mother’s struggles led me to the study of linguistics and then to a decision to pursue a career in Speech Pathology. My experience to date has totally confirmed me in this decision. My work experience as a Junior Applied Behavior Analysis Therapist has exposed me to the day-to-day work of Speech Pathologists and I have learned a great deal. The most important lesson has been that it takes a very special type of person to treat speech disorders successfully; that empathy, determination and enormous patience, substantial technical knowledge and skills are called for to achieve optimum outcomes. I was responsible for conducting discrete trials, performing fluency instructions, evaluation and providing recommendations on the evaluations. The seeds for my academic and career paths were planted at a very tender age. Indeed, summer vacations found me wearing my school uniform, so reminiscent of a nurse’s uniform, and going to work with my mother, a district nurse. My mother’s example as a compassionate care provider instilled in me the value of contributing to society by helping others. Professionally, I feel that I have exhausted every path of opportunity and challenge at my current academic level.
