What most distinguishes me from other applicants to your highly competitive program in Environmental Science and Policy Program at XXXX University is the fact that I am a Chinese survivor of the Japanese earthquake and subsequent radiation leakage. While I have no reason to suspect that I might have been exposed to radiation (other than my mother’s concern), Fukushima had a major psychological impact on my thinking and academic direction. I speak Japanese fluently since I spent four years in Tokyo after graduating from high school in Beijing. In fact, I completed 3 years of my undergraduate studies in Japan before my family pressured me to transfer to the USA—primarily because of what they perceived to be the danger of nuclear radiation in Japan in the fallout from the earthquake. This calamity and the associated drama have radically intensified my passion for preserving the sanctity of our natural environment and protecting us from major human-caused threats, as in the case of nuclear disasters. I am thankful that I have understood now for several years that what is most important is to follow one’s heart when choosing and preparing for a career. And my heart belongs to the cause of protecting our environment through progressive public policy initiatives. While I am certain that other applicants to your program may have higher grades or test scores than I have, it is hoped that my experience, language abilities, and proactive attitude might help to compensate. My achievements have been powered by a high degree of self-motivation to become a soldier in the protection of our environment, especially Southeast Asia. In preparation for this goal, I have gone out of my way to take rigorous courses and to interface with distinguished faculty. At XXXX University, I would look forward to interacting with peers and professors from all corners of the planet, working together to probe the critical issues of our day with respect to protecting our natural environment for generations to come. I am convinced that, with the top-tier faculty members in your program and the rich intellectual resources, and state-of-the-art research centers and institutions at XXXX University, that your distinguished MPA Program is the optimal springboard for my career. Here at XXU, I found my epiphany analyzing the water of the XXXX River here in XXXX, doing a poster and a presentation. XXXX will prepare me to think in much broader terms about our complex environmental and sustainable development challenges, preparing me to become a cutting-edge public manager and policymaker at the service of environmental protection in Southeast Asia. I am often troubled by the bitter relationship sustained between China and Japan, quarreling over small uninhabited islands claimed by both or the visit of a politician to a war memorial. It is my sincere hope that completing your program at XXXX will prepare me for a lifetime of service facilitating greater cooperation and collaboration between China and Japan in the protection of what we all share for the future, our natural habitat. Thank you for considering my application to your program. MPA Environmental Science and Policy Personal Purpose

A few months ago, I undertook the project of going through some of my items at my mother’s home in Dallas, Texas. Although they all told part of my history—photos, name badges from the various jobs I’ve held over the years, my model horse collection from my childhood—nothing conveyed my personal focus as much as my personal library, mostly books related to health and nutrition, low-carb, vegan, raw food, fruit-only raw food, Paleo, dairy-based diets, dairy as toxic, fasting, juicing, detoxing; the list goes on. “Introductory Psychology” was the first class I took upon my return to college six years ago and in which I subsequently proved to myself that I could earn an 'A'. I am not afraid of arduous work, having held a job every year of my life since I was fifteen. While I was not a good student in my younger years, I was accepted to the University of XXXX and began the Didactic Program in Dietetics in the spring of 2013. Thus, there was a lot of progress to savor and enjoy when I graduated with honors two years later. I am a good fit for your program to continue my studies in the field at the graduate level. Earning an MHS in Human Nutrition from UX would enable me to make my maximum long-term contribution to my community. I want very much to attend a rigorous program such as yours to become the most effective nutrition professional possible with a cutting-edge understanding of the role played by food in the overall well-being of the residents of our community as well as the need for the implementation of public health nutrition programs, challenges, resources, creative ideas and mode, ls, etc. I am particularly interested in the role nourishment plays in the wellness of the mind; in particular, I serve and hope to someday conduct and publish research in this area at the intersection of nutrition and mental health. On several occasions, I have overheard people at the grocery store lament that they do not have time to cook or the funds to spend on healthy food. More than anything, I want to give the average tired, underpaid, overworked, overburdened, and overstressed American the tools to change this way of thinking. I spent years in the retail side of nutrition and wellness although. However, rewarding to assist those seeking ways to better their health, I also saw that there is much misinformation out there and—even worse—nutritional “snake oil” which at the very least misleads the public and depletes their pocketbooks while displacing correct habits and purchases. Nutritional falsehoods—much of them fed by those seeking to profit from the sale of various products and diets or to elicit a headline in the news—have led much of the public to believe that obtaining a nutrient-rich diet in the optimal caloric range is complicated, expensive and simply out of reach for the average individual and family. My favorite project as part of my courses at UA was one in which I taught high school students in low-income areas how to make the most of their food budget dollars. Those of low socioeconomic status suffer disproportionately from nutrition-related diseases; I have observed the challenges faced by those struggling to make ends meet first-hand in several of my hourly wages jobs and highly empathize with them; the health of oneself and one’s family can easily take a backseat to managing managements of daily living. Nutrition education empowers people to enhance the quality and duration of their lives and those of allies. I wish very much to devote the balance of my life fully immersed to helping others to see the importance of eating healthy, breaking down the mystery, and standing up to the challenge of pursuing a healthy lifestyle in the modern world. It takes a great deal of courage to eat right, get fit, and stay that way, especially in the face of other mental health challenges, such as anxiety and depression, which make it even more difficult. I want to serve as a guide to help people make wiser decisions about food and fitness and inspire them to feel better and live longer lives. Developing effective nutrition education for the masses is an ongoing process of research and trial and error, with much to gain from the immense discoveries made continuously in the field of nutrition. I passed the examination for certification as a Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR). I am also currently a dietary aide under the supervision of a Registered Dietitian at a skilled nursing facility; my tasks include preparing trays according to resident meal tickets, thickening liquids, puréeing foods, assisting with food preparation, and delivering trays and comm, uniting with care team members. Thank you for considering my application. Master's Human Nutrition Statement of Purpose

At the center of my intellectual and professional interests stand the prevention and management of chronic disease and the search for ways to improve health while we reduce both costs and healthcare disparities, primarily through the intervention and development of a better understanding of SES factors. I hope to earn the MPH Degree to harness the full power of science, social and physical, to the cause of improving public health outcomes. I look forward to developing expertise concerning the ethics of public health administration. I hope to earn a Master of Public Health with a concentration in Public Health Policy and Management at the University of XXXX. As an Afro-Caribbean female, single parent, and the first member of my family to graduate from college, let alone graduate school, I am fortunate in many ways. The youngest of five children, all my siblings are more than ten years my senior; I grew up alone in an underprivileged and crime-stricken neighborhood. I have triumphed over tough odds during my academic and professional career. Earning the MPH Degree at XXXX will enable me to develop the preparation and credentials I need to contribute to health care management. While there are a variety of reasons why XXXX is my first choice among MPH programs, most of all, I am enthralled with the sheer breadth and depth of your curriculum with its thoroughgoing treatment of the comparative effectiveness and quality of care and, in particular, access to that care. My primary professional focus is to develop the skills and knowledge that I need to be able to fill leadership positions in healthcare and policy development, and the option that you have at UNC-CH to focus one’s studies in the area of management, in particular, is especially well suited to my professional goals. I plan to continue to work full-time, and I see your MPH Program at XXXX as the most acceptable online program in the world, especially in terms of user experience. I love your website and feel excited every time I arrive; it is my connection to furthering my education and my career, my link to the future. Nothing excites me as much as learning to apply a fuller understanding of the fundamental components of health care systems, delivery, and financing in assessing the impact and consequences of policies and laws affecting health care, evaluating solutions proposed along with regulations, market pressures, and contingencies, etc. Another thing I appreciate about your program at XXXX is your thorough treatment of racial/ethnic disparities, diverse populations (i.e., language, disability, etc.), health care access, spending, quality, and the overall health and wellness of the people. I want to earn the MPH Degree to become adept at comprehensively evaluating programs and policies using data analysis, program monitoring, needs assessment, economic evaluation, and statistical and analytic methods. I look forward to synthesizing information about the American political system, political institutions, organizational goals and values, resources, and power structures to understand health policymaking processes better. I want to perfect my ability to interpret data sources and variables, learn to use innovative programming tools, and enhance my skills in data collection so that I will be fully prepared for optimal performance in public health policy analysis and program evaluation. The tragic life circumstances to which I have been subjected have provided me with a unique opportunity for excellence, as I see it, as a public health professional, because of the vast amount of study that I now have invested in kidney failure and its treatment. After the birth of our daughter, my fiancé became ill and was diagnosed with Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). I managed all the various aspects of his treatment, which was incredibly stressful, but it did result in my developing an advanced grasp of this area of public health. There were different doctors to consult, many tests to schedule, and research to fully understand his particular care instructions and get an adequate grasp on the big picture of public health issues in kidney disease. I served as his advocate, ensuring he received proper care and recruiting the help of others. After spending approximately 11 months on dialysis while waiting for a kidney transplant, he succumbed to the disease and died of renal failure. There were over 50,000 people on the kidney transplant waiting list, prioritized by how long they had been on the list, their blood type, immune system activity, and certain other factors. The demand simply outstrips the supply. Inspired by this recent experience and seeking to make the most of my personal tragedy and loss, I have continued to learn about kidney disease, building upon what I already know, and I look forward to continuing to do so as a graduate student in public health, working to raise awareness as a volunteer so as to prevent kidney disease as well as improving early detection and treatment. Completing the MPH program at XXXX will enable me to continue to work towards my professional goal of becoming a leader in the public health profession, wrestling with complex public health issues and challenges. I will become an interdisciplinary expert in public health problem-solving and progressive policymaking for private as well as government agencies. I will learn innovative strategies for collaborating with other professionals, communities, and consumers in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of health care programs and policies. Most importantly, I will learn how to conduct and incorporate research findings in specific community practice settings and to recognize and evaluate ethical or legal issues in public health and professional practice. Thank you for considering my application to the MPH Program at XXXX. MPH Online Masters Personal Purpose, Afro-Caribbean

As a highly experienced dentist, I have naturally become aware of the enormous impact of lifestyle and other manageable factors on dental and oral health. My observations and research on this matter fired an intense interest in preventative education in which I have become increasingly involved over the years. However, my interest in preventative education has moved beyond specifically dental and oral health to the general health of patients. I have become especially interested in Type 2 Diabetes prevention, a disease which is widespread in the populations I served. I have dealt with this issue on an individual and local level but it now my goal to acquire the skills and knowledge to enable me to become a part of the global solution to this grave and escalating problem and in the general promotion of good health worldwide. My goal is to join a government department or NGO involved in health education in an underdeveloped and under-served part of the world. I would probably be of most use in rural South Asia as I am already familiar with many of the cultural and lifestyle factors that are obstacles to good health such as betel nut and tobacco chewing which are both so harmful to dental, oral and general health and the seclusion of women which often results in healthcare being provided only in cases of extreme need, if at all. As a Pakistani female, I feel that I can make a difference in some situations where others may be unable to do so. As stated, I have also taken a particular interest in Type 2 Diabetes which occurs disproportionately in South Asian populations and to which so many other serious health problems are related. This problem is increasing rapidly and reaching disastrous levels. One theory is that this arises from rising incomes which, in turn, gives rise to increased consumption of sugar which exacerbates the genetic factors already present. I should be extremely interested in assisting in some related research project. I know that good intentions alone are insufficient in themselves to solve problems but that solid research and accurate analysis of results are the foundations to the achievement of beneficial change. In Saudi Arabia I undertook a statistical analysis relating to the effectiveness of fluoride application in preschoolers. I also suggested that dental checks be undertaken, and basic dental health education provided at the same time as visits to schools by vaccination teams which I believe had highly beneficial results in improving dental health. I have also undertaken an undergraduate course of study in Statistics because of my interest in research. Having practiced in several countries, I am aware that cultural awareness and sensitivity is vital in health education and that what works in one place may be far less effective elsewhere. I have happily worked and studied with people of many social and ethnic backgrounds. I enjoy sharing knowledge of my own culture and gaining knowledge of others. My multi-cultural exposure is of relevance to effective health education in which long standing cultural attitudes and habits are often linked to health and well-being. I am aware that a temptation towards a ‘box-ticking’ mentality exists among some of those involved in health education. Establishing what methods work with a particular population by rigorous follow up and solid feedback ensures that future efforts in similar populations are of real worth. While hoping to be part of the global solution to improving public health, I am aware that it is necessary not to become detached from real people with real problems and to avoid seeing people as mere budgetary or statistical units. No matter how exalted a position I might achieve, I intend to constantly seek ‘real world’ exposure to ensure that I retain my focus on the underlying ‘why’ of my studies and work. I am particularly drawn to the program because of the range and relevance of the core and elective courses to my goals and the focus on research methods, and the prestigious faculty. I am particularly interested in the work of Professor Bradley Johnson on the unreliability of current sugar consumption guidelines. To summarize: I am a well-qualified and experienced medical professional who has worked in three continents, with a background in statistical analysis and in providing effective health education in small populations while having an extraordinarily strong interest in research. My major recommendation, however, is a genuine passion to improve general health and well-being particularly, but not solely, MPH Public Health Personal Purpose Preventing Diabetes

My country, Saudi Arabia, or Saudia as we call it, bans women from participating on its Olympic team, as well as public schools and universities. And it is illegal for us to even drive a car, and this is Saudi Arabian women's greatest claim to fame worldwide. In this climate of acute repression many women have sought solace in intellectual pursuits and spirituality. I have gravitated to psychology, a search for inner strength, freedom, and peace of mind. Born in Mecca and raised in Jeddah, I embarked on a traditional life that I went on to reject. Divorced, soon to be remarried here in America, I have cast off the chains of my upbringing, but I still yearn for home. In fact, I want PsyD. Degree, most of all, to help to promote change in our Saudia, helping to understand deviance and mental illness better so that we can treat those of our people that are ill, rather than stigmatize them; so that we can better learn how to appreciate our women, helping them to become productive leaders among us rather than forcing them to stay at home living as bitter, repressed souls. For me, Psychology has been the way that I have been able to best connect my religion and spirituality to my humanity, and how I have been able to cope, first with Saudi oppressiveness, then with America's permissiveness. I have two precious daughters ages 10 and 13 who follow in their mom's footsteps. It is my greatest hope of all, that studying psychology will allow me to provide them with a better education, future, peace of mind and heart, providing them with constructive direction. Since I will soon be completing my master's program at Valdosta State University, I have now had the opportunity to prove myself, and for someone still struggling with English, I am pleased to have earned a 3.5 GPA. I am convinced that I made the right choice by choosing Psychology, because I like to help people; I am a giving person and I find special joy in relieving people's sorrow by listening and empathizing with them. Recently, I have become even more aware of this because of my experiences in cognitive, behavioral, and humanistic approaches in my Practicum work at XXXX State University Master's program. I have included several recommendation letters from my VSU Professors. I respectfully request admission to the PsyD. program of clinical psychology, because I am confident that XXX College is the right place for me to continue my studies. I seek more advanced knowledge of cultural diversity issues in psychology, integral therapy, and family theory, especially system theory. And I want to learn so much more about the ethical and legal issues that psychologists face daily. As a 32-year-old woman with previous graduate experience in the field of psychology, I believe that my maturity and life experiences have prepared me as a highly motivated candidate for the Doctor of Psychology Program at XXXX. My passion and commitment for making a positive difference in people's lives has given me the determination to succeed in this program. The complexities of human behavior have always motivated me and inspired me to learn more about psychology, especially the ethical issues associated with questions of cultural diversity and their impact on psychotherapy. After earning a doctorate at XXXX, I will either stay and practice in America helping people here, especially American Arabs (Allah willing), or go back to Saudi Arabia as a Doctor of Psychology to help my country evolve and improve women's rights and stature within the family and in society. My background and life experiences energize me to learn more about family therapy. Graduating from XXXX University with a major in Psychology, in 20XX, the youngest of nine children, I learned early on the value of hard work and perseverance since my mother died when I was only 16 years old. My father, a diplomat, soon married again and began a new life. My oldest brother helped to raise and care for me, for which I am eternally grateful. My family is devoutly religious and while they sometimes lack tolerance of multi-cultural issues and differences, this served for me as an inspiration, since I wanted more, understanding, peace, reconciliation, and learning how and why some people succeed in life while others fail, the psychological as well as the economic or faith-based interpretations. My fiancé is an American Muslim who is also open minded and fully supports my quest for professional advancement. At some point, he may even accompany me to Saudia since he knows that much of my heart remains at home and that I long to help bring constructive change to Saudi society as a professional psychologist. I am now a fully cosmopolitan woman who has traveled much of the world and seen much of the USA as well as Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Turkey. I now thrive on multi-cultural challenges and find myself full of intellectual energy and curiosity to unlock more keys to understanding Muslim women, both in Muslim countries and here in America. I seek a professional foundation upon which to build in our increasingly global society. I am most fond of how our globe is shrinking and this profoundly reinforces by constant thirst to better understand other languages, customs, geography, and cultural habits of so many of our neighbors. Like most Muslim women, I followed the tradition of my culture and married a man selected for me by my family and had two daughters with him. My husband's drug addiction and its consequences, however, led me far from him and increasingly closer to my study of Psychology; in time, I pursued and obtained my bachelor's degree in Saudi Arabia. It was Psychology that delivered me from an unhappy marriage, giving me hope for a better future. Upon graduating in 2013, I was able to gained additional valuable knowledge by joining a mental health hospital team as a trainee in psychometrical testing and this helped to further confirmed my love for this career path, I was searching for an opportunity to continue my education in order to enhance my capacity to fulfill my ambition to help people who suffered. In 2015, my application to the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Jeddah to study towards a high diploma in clinical psychology was accepted and I earned a certificate from The Saudi Council of Health Specialties, placing second place in my class. After receiving my clinical certificate, I worked as counseling psychologist for three months at Al Rashed Center for Personal and Social development. I will feel enormously proud to be selected by ____ to contribute to the enormous, beautiful diversity of your program and to have the opportunity to study the whole range of important issues for the psychological professional, perhaps especially the ethical issues that accompany the study and practice of psychology, and, diversity itself. As a woman from a culture where diversity is not celebrated and women take a back seat in all fields, it will indeed be a liberating celebration of life, and a great privilege to participate in your program and be part of your community of learners. I am a 23-year-old woman from China who will be finishing my MPH Degree at XXXX University this coming May of 2011. I have concentrated most of all on epidemiology but have also developed a profound interest in global health. I hope very much to be accepted to your world-renowned Program at XXX University and attain the Ph.D. because I am convinced that this will enable me to make the most significant contribution possible to the field of epidemiology on a global scale. I am especially interested in researching the struggle against both AIDS and cancer. I keenly look forward to undertaking further advanced research in quantitative methods, generalized incredibly linear models, and mixed-effects models, to become increasingly efficient at correlating data as it pertains to the study of chronic disease. I look forward to studying the vast range of statistical methods related to complex sampling design and meta-analysis issues. My long-term goal is to become an accomplished expert in the health sciences who is highly proficient at guiding teams of investigators in the field. I am a very dedicated and compassionate young woman who is most concerned with the wellness of societies, especially our most vulnerable groups. I have teaching and leadership experience and have completed an internship with the CDC that has proven to be invaluable since it has provided me with first-hand experience in this area. I am well trained at the master's level in methodology, biostatistics, and epidemiology and have received all ‘As’ in my biostatistics and epidemiology courses. I also have considerable laboratory experience in the biological sciences, having completed an undergraduate thesis about AIDS and, subsequently, a great deal of cancer research. I am an accomplished proposal writer who was awarded a GFE scholarship, and I am enormously fond of designing questionnaires and surveys, conducting experiments, and gathering and analyzing data. As a Chinese woman, I am particularly interested in the numerous public health issues facing China and have studied them in-depth. My master's program at XXU in Global Epidemiology has proven to be especially beneficial to me in helping me to confirm my career directions and integrate my laboratory skills with what I have learned in population-based science. I was born and raised in a family of academics. Even when I was incredibly young, I often stayed late in the laboratory with my parents to do my homework and to play with rubber suction bulbs. I learned early on the value of working hard and dedicating oneself to science. In the summer of 2007, I joined a group of students that went deep into the countryside, conducting surveys, and together we authored a paper about the one-child policy. It won the highest prize in a competition held by the National Population and Family Planning Commission of China. My undergraduate education in the Fundamental Sciences Program at Tsinghua University provided me not only with profound theoretical knowledge in biomedicine and biochemistry but also considerable laboratory research skills in chronic diseases—neurodegenerative diseases, oxidation, microbicide, and HIV/AIDS. In 2007, I participated in a genetics research project using Drosophila Melanogaster to screen potential rescued transgenes for Parkinson's. I studied potentially useful drugs for treating Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s chorea, searching for microRNA that would respond to H2O2 treatments using high throughput sequencing technology. Other invaluable opportunities presented themselves the following year at the Yunnan University of Chinese Traditional Medicine, detecting microbicide candidates from Salvia Yunnanensis, walnut tea, through ELISA of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase inhibition. I believe strongly that my research experience will benefit me in interdisciplinary epidemiologic disease research. In 2008, XXXX University’s Comprehensive AIDS Research Center (CARC) began operation, and I was able to collaborate with them for my final year, becoming the first student to complete my undergraduate thesis with the CARC. I adopted HIV backbone vector pNL4-3 to pack pseudovirus by co-transfecting them with pcDNA-ENV plasmid to 293T cells, utilizing ghost cell models of infection for titer-detection by luciferase assay. Within just two months, I obtained 38 HIV-1ENV pseudo-particles of high activity from virulent Chinese strains. I made up the first draft of an optimized protocol for pseudovirus packaging, which had the unique feature of high transfection efficiency, and helped other researchers in the lab. My paper based on this research, Genetic and neutralization properties of diverse HIV-1 env clones from chronically infected patients in China, has just been submitted to Pols Pathogen. Most notably, I displayed the HIV envelope gene (CNE3-ENV) on yeast surface by conducting DNase random cleavage and reassembly. The successful construction of the HIV-1 ENV library in a yeast surface display system helps us to realize a new, speeded-up strategy for designing vaccines, resulting in a novel way to recognize relationships between antibodies and epidemics. Most recently, I enjoyed a summer practicum (2010) with the Bureau of Education in a poor county, designing a questionnaire for high school students and leading a team that conducted surveys about mental health and health education, as well as performing statistical analysis using SAS 9.2. Our team then prepared an evidence-based strategy report and other group members to assist in policy making. This experience inspired me to learn rapidly how to adjust weights and design effects in complex samples properly. During my first year at Emory, I worked part-time for the Department of Ophthalmology and released an abstract for ARVO 2011. I am now working with Dr. XXXX, focusing on the utility of biomarkers (Mib1) to predict the development of colorectal cancer better. I hope to have the opportunity to continue my study of the descriptive epidemiology of cancer in your program and continue to develop my skills in statistical methods for correlated, longitudinal, clustered, and multi-level data for cancer risk assessment and screening. I eventually want to return to China to work in public health and hygiene. My home province, Yunnan, suffers even more from the ravages of disease than the general population. When I interned at the Yunnan Center for Disease Control (CDC), I got first-hand experience working with those who live with HIV/AIDS but know little to nothing about this disease. This was one of my first experiences of the joy of feeling useful to those who need me most. Earning the Ph.D. A degree in your highly esteemed program will provide me with the springboard that I need to become a world-class health professional and scientific investigator. XXXX University of Science and Technology's Master Program in Global Health is my first choice for graduate school for a variety of reasons. From America, I had a chance to visit XXXX earlier this year and was really inspired by its beauty and culture. XXXX is one of the leading universities in Norway and, thus, I would like very much to combine my love of Norway with my passion for Public Health. I hope to be selected as a valuable contribution to the diversity of your program, since I was born in Panama and my focus is on the public health challenges of some of the most at-risk regions and peoples of Latin America, about which I have been reading intensively for many years. It would be a special honor for me to study under Dr. XXXX, the Director of XXXX's Thematic Strategic Area of Health, Welfare and Technology since I am a devoted follower of his research on bacterial infections and antibiotics. I have always been most inspired by the work of Dr. XXXX who was instrumental in the building of the Panama Canal by his design and implementation of measures to fight malaria. I have been especially concerned for some time about the plight of native communities and other low-income residents of Latin America - with limited access to medical care and poor sanitation. I hope to earn my MS in Public Health in your program to be fully qualified for the rest of my professional lifetime to the struggle to contain if not eradicate disease in Latin America, particularly that which results from poor sanitation. I want to go there and teach vulnerable communities how to combat preventable disease, especially what is caused by mosquitoes. I pay close attention to re-emerging diseases such as dengue fever and Leptospirosis in Latin America and I seek to better understanding why they have returned. I am especially thankful as a young woman that I am fully bilingual and bicultural English/Spanish as this will be invaluable to the realization of my career aspirations as a Public Health Professional. I earned my BS in Business Administration with a focus on Finance in August of2008. If I had it to do over again, I might have chosen an undergraduate major more closely related to public health issues and concerns; nevertheless, I feel strongly that an education in business has at least an indirect relevance for public health, especially in terms of human resources. I am convinced that I will excel in your MPH because nothing interests me as much as learning about and investigating disease processes, particularly as far as they relate to developing countries. I have read a broad variety of books and articles about disease processes, especially as related to the developing world; and have a great passion for helping the least fortunate among us. Since reading The Hot Zone at age 9, I have daydreamed about a career in Public Health, working for the WHO or the CDC and doing research on the spread of diseases that impact the developing world. I am a devoted student of the history of disease and how it has impacted society. My main interest in Public Health organizations lies in the preventative measures that can be used to promote and protect the health of vulnerable populations. I look forward to a long professional lifetime working with local organizations to raise awareness of the need to adopt and implement preventative health care measures. Thank you for considering my application to your Global Public Health Program at XXXX. Global Health Statement of Purpose Examples

I hope to earn a Master of Public Health with a concentration in health care management, public policy development, and education; and I plan to also develop a concurrent focus on crisis and disaster management. I look forward to a lifetime of creative research in the search for ways to better implement intervention policies that are able to provide the population with direct access to primary health care--even in the face of emergencies—due to public health preparedness education and strategic planning, even in a developing world country such as my own, Pakistan, that is prone to natural disasters as well as plagued by political violence Three months ago, I had the chance of meeting Dr XXXX, a practicing pulmonologist in Farmington, Connecticut, United States. We got into a discussion concerning the primary health care structure in Pakistan, what it is lacking, and why the system is failing. The basic health unit (BHU), the first medical contact available to villagers, is found without a doctor and all too often with a lock on the door and no help to be found at all. For the BHUs to be functional we need to provide incentives for doctors to work in rural areas and ensure an authority is responsible to ensure that quality of service is maintained and checked regularly. I was especially excited by an example that Dr. XXXX told me about a module in the US where a team of attending physicians rotates into a rural area for one week out of each month, enhancing the coverage and quality of care in those rural areas that are most in need of that care. Completing my MPH program will provide me with the opportunity to explore a wide range of health care delivery models and creative ideas for bringing health care to rural areas, especially in the Developing World. I look forward to working on medical education and awareness especially in much neglected parts of the interior, in Sindh, Baluchistan and Punjab. My project of diarrhea awareness and basic preventive measure in ‘Mithi’ Thar Parkar helped me to become acutely aware of the deadly consequences of our vast health care delivery disparities between our rural and urban populations. I would continue to do parallel projects with ‘Akhurath’ and ‘Rotary Foundation’ and align my health awareness programs with welfare projects that are already in place. One of the highlights of my career so far was going to India as part of an intellectual exchange conference where I had the opportunity to meet fellow members of the Rotary Foundation, who had successfully improved their health care systems using primary health care campaigns in rural areas. We face special challenges in my country because Pakistan has been facing one natural disaster after the other or as long as I can remember. Every year, we face floods and every year we realize how utterly unprepared we are. Command structures break down and information delivery systems fail to function; all in the absence of adequate plans of action for what few emergency response resources do exist. Once I earn the MPH Degree in America, I hope to work with our National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to address the most salient structural weaknesses that result in our inability to respond to natural disasters with medical assistance to the victims. - MPH Epidemiology and Biostatistics Personal Purpose
A Cardiologist trained in Egypt and my native Yemen, I am applying to study for the master's degree in public health at XXXX University (Epidemiology and Biostatistics) because my extended family and I have all chosen XXXX as our home, and we are most happy with our choice. A permanent resident of the USA since 2014, I have spent the past two years since I arrived in America working towards independent financial security, building a business along with other family members here in XXXX. Now that our business enterprise is flourishing, I can afford to return to my education and re-train here in America for further professional advancement. I hope to be admitted to XXXX University’s MPH Program based on the fact that I am a medical doctor trained in my native Yemen, a country that is in desperate need of assistance from the international medical community since it is one of the poorest countries in the world with the least developed public health infrastructure and beset by political instability and war off and on again for decades. Now 34 years old, when I was 12 years old, my family fled violence in our part of Yemen and sought refuge in Saudi Arabia. I returned to Yemen for medical school because Yemenis are not eligible to attend medical school in Saudi Arabia. I received my permanent residency in the USA in April of 2014. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to complete high school in Saudi Arabia. This gave my education an international flavor, exposing me to young people from various countries and cultures, the children of guest workers like my parents. During this period in Saudi Arabia, my English improved rapidly since it is my chosen international language. I studied it intensively as part of my academic curriculum and practiced it with other young people from places like the Philippines, where Saudi Arabia’s workers are drawn. After finishing medical school, I completed my first internship in Internal Medicine in Yemen (08-07/10-07), followed by training in Surgery (11-07/01-08), Pediatrics (02-08/04/08), and Obstetrics & Gynecology (05-08/07-08) followed by a full year of residency in Internal Medicine from (10-08/10-09). In 2009, I moved to Egypt to advance my career in medicine, and by 2013 I was studying for a master's degree in Cardiology. First, I fulfilled a nine-month residency assignment in Internal Medicine with the Cairo University Faculty of Medicine in Cairo and then went on to serve the same teaching university as a resident Cardiologist for three years, from July 2010 through July 2013. One of the primary reasons I chose Cardiology as my medical specialty was because heart disease took my grandfather and potentially threatened my entire family. After a brief return to Saudi Arabia, I moved to the USA, establishing a permanent home. I now hope to distinguish myself as a very hard-working graduate student in your MPH program at XXXX University. I am pleased that I will bring to your program extensive medical experience serving not only in Yemen but also in Egypt, where the practice of medicine is significantly more developed but still lags far behind the way medicine is practiced in America. Successive waves of civil war have gradually destroyed the entire health system in Yemen. Poverty is so severe that many have limited access to drinking water, and most of the population suffers from food insecurity. Illiteracy rates are remarkably high, especially for women and girls, which makes everything worse. Sanitation is abysmal, and diseases like malaria and tuberculosis, much less a problem in other parts of the Middle East, spread rapidly in Yemen. Maternal, neonatal, infant, and child mortality are among the highest globally, along with neighbors like Somalia and South Sudan. I hope I can help to improve the level of health in my country and throughout the region by participating in studies and scientific research, particularly that related to strengthening Yemen’s national health care system. I keenly look forward to learning how to combat epidemics and infectious diseases successfully, reducing morbidity – especially among children, along with maternal, neonatal, and infant mortality rates. My long-term goal is to work as a public health professional down the road, always paying special attention to Yemen and the Middle East and North Africa more flying back and forth for years between this magical land of my birth afflicted with such suffering. My newly adopted home, America, to which we look for assistance and hope. I want to contribute to the control of sexually transmitted diseases, significantly HIV/AIDS, while we radically improve the quality of health services and increase their utilization. Central to my initiative will be the development of emergency obstetric care services. I would enjoy teaching Public Health at some point at Aden University, where I studied medicine in Yemen. I want to study at the forefront at XXXX and learn everything I can about diseases' causes and ways to prevent them. My studies in Public Health will inspire and enable me to achieve a professional stature that will be effective at working alongside the government – in whatever form it may exist at the time or who it may be – in a search for sustainable solutions to problems in a non-existent to dysfunctional health system resulting from poverty, war, regime change, corruption, widespread religious, tribal, and political violence. My central dream is to work with or out of the WHO’s local office in Yemen. I dearly love the commitment of my time to medicine daily morning meetings in the hospital, the newly admitted cases each day, follow-ups, scientific research, and especially everything having to do with cardiology. I have participated in various public health awareness campaigns in Yemen and Egypt. Among the highlights have been the polio vaccinations in my city, Aden, along with several awareness programs for malaria and breast cancer. In both countries, I have provided blood pressure screening and offered information to those at risk for hypertension and diabetes. Dengue fever is again becoming a problem in Yemen. The WHO has drawn up a 5-year strategic plan to scale up preparedness and response activities for dengue fever prevention and control. I am studying this plan closely and could not find it more exciting, strengthening surveillance and early warning systems in high-risk areas, implementing additional campaigns to control the vector, training physicians on clinical management of dengue, and intensifying health education among the population. TB is also a significant problem in Yemen, the fourth cause of death; 2000- 2500 people die yearly. Tourists suffer from Typhoid, and Malaria is all too common. I want to focus on Yemen because it is my country, home, and people, and when we fled to Saudi Arabia, I already had my heart set on becoming a doctor. Because I grew up in an area where Malaria was one of the leading causes of death, I read a lot about malaria, educating my friends and neighbors about how to avoid getting infected. Participating at scientific conferences in internal medicine and cardiology has been the highlight of my life so far, especially at The Annual Congress of the Egyptian Society of Cardiology. I have learned from traveling between several countries how to deal with people from diverse cultures, races, and social classes. I live to help foster community capability, individual competence and capacity, economic resilience, and social inclusion. I have been close to the misery of people's lives in some of the poorest villages in the world to vaccinate children, and I have helped numerous people who I have found near death in public spaces. One of my hobbies is writing, I like to author short stories, and I wrote about five short stories and participated in the annual university competition, all of which took first place. Thank you for considering my application to Public Health at XXXX University. MPH Epidemiology and Biostatistics Personal Purpose
- MPH Saudi Arabian Woman Medical Doctor Public Health Research for Hajj
Young and full of optimism, I am a Saudi woman who is a natural born leader and a creative thinker. I have lived in Canada before on two occasions for extended periods of time studying English in 2013 and 2015. I have also completed medical school and I hope very much to earn the master's degree in public health from XXXX University, my first choice for graduate school. I need the MPH Degree to contribute to the advancement of public health in Saudi Arabia and to learn how to conduct state-of-the-art public health research, especially concerning Hajj Season in Saudi Arabia, when millions of pilgrims come from all over the world come to visit Makkah. Nothing compares to Hajj in terms of so many visitors to one place at one time. There are a lot of lessons to be learned from Hajj that are of potential benefit to the rest of the world. Hajj is a human laboratory writ large for public health professionals. It should be studied intensely to learn all that we can about how diseases are spread. I work in the areas of administration, communication, and graphic design with several organizations struggling to provide adequate public health care support during Hajj season. I am also currently completing a medical internship which brings me into direct engagement with the pilgrims during Hajj. Previously, I volunteered to help as a medical student. Most of the pilgrims are old and many suffer from chronic diseases in addition to coming from low-income countries that are unable to pay anything for their health care in Saudi Arabia, presenting enormous health care challenges on every level including that of availability of financial resources. We care for foot injuries and many of the pilgrims are diabetic. We try to raise consciousness of hazards among the pilgrims themselves with multi-language poster campaigns and other initiatives, but the challenge is just so enormous. Most of all, we provide first aid for heat exhaustion and dehydration and emergency care for strokes and heart attacks. I have had nothing but wonderful experiences so far during the time that I have spent in Canada. I love the people and the culture and feel especially close because of the wonderful host families that I lived with while studying intensive English. There are many things that I appreciate about Canadians, especially their kindness and generosity coupled to their full embrace and celebration of multiculturalism. Canada gives me great energy, buoys my enthusiasm, and sustains my optimism. I see Canada as my second home and my point of insertion into global medicine and public health. I also see Canada as something of a role model in many ways, particularly as concerns the role of women. I love the vast diversity of people in Canada, the mixture of nationalities. I am ready to hit the ground running in your Master’s in Public Health Program at McMaster University in part because of my immersion in diversity. Volunteers, many of them from other countries, come to help with medical assistance and first aid during Hajj. This has very much helped to cultivate my deep passion for diversity and international collaboration and solidarity. Many of my Saudi colleagues have gone to Canada to complete their Master’s and PHD Degrees in public health and I wish very much to do the same. I have participated in several public health investigations, one of which is already published, and I am in regular contact with colleagues at Sydney university who are also extremely interested in Hajj research. Helping others and contributing to global public health is what makes me the happiest. I love to make people smile. During Hajj, some pray for me, helping me to feel strengthened and blessed. I continue to perfect my response to stress since Hajj lasts 10 days and there are always surprises. I only sleep a couple of hours each day or night through this period, and rest when it is over. Finally, I am particularly good with computer programs and graphic design which I put to excellent use for public health awareness campaigns. I fully intend to devote my professional life to the development of healthy communities, and I want to learn as much as I can not only about Public Health but also epidemiology, thinking globally as a citizen of the world and a doctor with an exciting laboratory at home: Hajj. I thank you for considering my application to XXXX MPH Saudi Arabian Woman, Medical Doctor, Public Health Research for Hajj
- MPH Program Statement of Purpose Sample Japanese
I would be especially honored if selected to your distinguished Master’s in Public Health Program at XXXX because of your low student-to-faculty ratio and the subsequent attention from and ability to interact with the faculty that results. I also very much appreciate the way in which students are encouraged to contribute to the design of their curriculum. I love XXXX’s interdisciplinary nature, collaboration with other XXXX schools, especially the XXXX Medical School and the XXXX School of Design. Conducting a thesis project and/or internship in association with the XXXX Department of Health or another public-health-related organization represents a singularly valuable opportunity. A Japanese student, I have a close friend in the MPH Program at XXXX, XXXX, who is a Siddha doctor, specializing in the traditional medicine of India. I am impressed with the fact that XXXX has the foundations to guide and assist her unique research on preventive medicine for Alzheimer's and diabetes patients using traditional Indian medical knowledge and technique. On her blog, she describes in detail her vast appreciation for XXXX and how thoughtfully the faculty caters to each student. Learning all about your system, resources, environment and people through her and her experiences, I have fallen in love with the idea of myself attending your program. Your MPH Program at XXXX is my first choice for graduate study for a variety of reasons, most of all the simple fact that it is one of the leading public health programs in the world. I also appreciate the fact that you have a large and extremely diverse student body from all over the planet, since I very much look forward to learning a great deal from my peers as well as my professors. While I keenly look forward to learning as much as I can about innovative theory and challenges in all areas of Public Health, I plan to develop my own special focus on mental health, epidemiology, public policy challenges, treatments, etc. I especially appreciate the efforts being made at Brown in global mental health, and the study of public mental health in the wake of natural disasters such as the Tsunami that hit Japan in March if 2011, programs to help manage stress after these kinds of events, etc. A Japanese man who is 25 years old, for years now I have been developing a special passion for epidemiology and public health. Completing your rigorous program at XXXX will enable me to acquire precisely the kind of professional skills and knowledge base that I will need in the future to excel, learning to better analyze and understand the genesis and propagation of disease, to know how to best prevent it. I am especially interested in mental health and want to use epidemiological skills to study and address global mental health issues. Japan is infamous for its high suicide rate (Karoshi). I want to thoroughly investigate the environmental/social-risk factors for mental health diseases, how to effectively treat if not prevent them from occurring. Japan is also unparalleled as an aging society. Soon, public health resources in Japan will continue to be stretched increasingly thin; and other countries face similar problems related to aging populations. After completing my MPH Degree and within time my PHD, I want to work for a health organization such as the WHO. I look forward to publishing in the future concerning what I see as the Japanese fear of failure and how it is related to suicide. I look forward to better understanding why Japanese people are so susceptible to mental illness especially in the young, and how it is related to problems at school. With frequency, growing up over the years, my family has gone to the US to visit our relatives in Denver, Colorado where I learned to speak English at play with my cousins. I also studied my cousins, their assimilation issues, how they compared to children growing up in Japan. I have also traveled, learned, and reflected a great deal about mental health across cultures, especially India, where I have spent significant periods of time. Despite enormous challenges resulting from poverty and poor sanitation, I suspect that the Indian people have fewer mental health issues than the Japanese, and this intrigues me. Thank you for considering my application to XXXX. MPH Program Statement of Purpose Sample Japanese Applicant
- MHA Master's Health Services Administration & Management
For the past sixteen years, I have maintained a conceptual continuity in my academic and professional careers, an unswerving commitment to healthcare services and their management. Reaching a point in my career where I feel I have exhausted every path of opportunity and challenge at my current academic level, I am turning once again to the only school has brought me the greatest sense of accomplishment, making me feel valued as a student, participant, and contributor to the learning process. Indeed, pursuing an MHA Degree is a natural and logical progression, but more than this, it will build upon my existing foundation in Human Behavior and be instrumental in bringing my career goals, ambitions, and my dreams to fruition. The MHA program will allow me to conduct further research into the areas of stem cell research and total mechanical artificial heart replacement, making me that much more valuable. This is specifically the type of comprehensive cardiac and vascular care center management work that I seek to become engaged with post-graduation. Upon building my exposure and seniority in health services management, I aim to fill a directorial position, working to bring about sustainable change in the field of organ transplantation. At the same time, I am planning to work as a graduate school professor, ideally with ____ College, giving back to my alma mater and bringing real-world examples and experiences to students in leadership training, aiding in their success, guaranteeing the future of ethics in the business world. I bring with me to the student body an excellent foundation in Administration. Coupled with this, my own interest in the field of Health Services Management is steeped in individual experiences, namely my volunteer work; it was during this time that my cousin was waiting for a heart transplant. I happened to meet a man who would later become my husband, whose brother was waiting for a liver transplant, and my passion for organ donor awareness began. Our families have a history of requiring organ transplantation. Several of my family members are listed and waiting for lung and kidney transplants. Using my experience to promote organ donation, I have spearheaded five events educating and promoting organ transplant efforts, encouraging people to become organ donors, giving the gift of life to others. From the time I graduated with my BS two decades ago, I have been involved in healthcare management, from office support to physician practice management, project management, revenue cycle re-design, marketing, and finance. Each of my positions has led logically to the next, demonstrating consistent progress in responsibilities and breadth of scope of experiences. These experiences, the practical, combined with classroom theory and practicum will aid me invaluably in my ambitions. I feel that my ability to apply theoretical analysis to practical healthcare management situations will shed light on many other students' own methodologies, as I learn from theirs. At the same time, as a first-generation Italian American, I have a worldview that is quite different from my academic peers. I do not mention this simply to increase the diversity of the student body. I have developed an ability to interact effectively with not only my fellow colleagues, but since having experienced life as an immigrant, I feel particularly sensitive to the needs of many minorities. Coupled with this is my ability to speak two languages fluently and travels to Mexico, Europe and throughout the Caribbean, both the developed and emerging world. As a result, I can speak confidently in front of groups of people and am extremely comfortable in my own skin while celebrating the differences that make us all unique. There is a need to reach out to our diverse clients, to understand and appreciate our differences, be it cultural or socioeconomic, an appreciation of the rich tapestry of life that we are all a part of on earth. A future Health Services manager needs to be able to interact effectively with people of differing cultures, ethnicities, nationalities, and creeds. This is critically important given the vast influx of person with varied backgrounds into America's healthcare system. Given my cultural competency, I feel I will be completely adept at reaching out to my diverse clients, no matter their country of origin. This is what I bring to the student body, as well, one in which I anticipate many opportunities for group assignments, teamwork and projects. ____ College is my sole choice for furthering my education. I hope to learn from the highly experienced faculty and accomplished student body. I look forward to sharing my own analyses, testing others, and coming to unexpected conclusions and learning that much more from the collective meeting of ambitious minds. I completely embrace the fact that there is more than one leadership method, that there is ample room for improvement in my own style and what better place to learn such lessons than in the classroom, where the consequences of failure do not translate into inefficiency or systemic failure. It is in the classroom where our missteps can be turned into learning experiences, and in study time, we can reflect on our interactions, integrating them into our own distinctive path. I look forward to a continued relationship with ____ and thank you for your time and consideration. MHA Master's Health Services Administration & Management
