MHA Master's Health Services Administration & Management

Updated: Jul 2

For the past sixteen years, I have maintained a conceptual continuity in my academic and professional careers, an unswerving commitment to healthcare services and their management. Reaching a point in my career where I feel I have exhausted every path of opportunity and challenge at my current academic level, I am turning once again to the only school has brought me the greatest sense of accomplishment, making me feel valued as a student, participant, and contributor to the learning process.

Indeed, pursuing an MHA Degree is a natural and logical progression, but more than this, it will build upon my existing foundation in Human Behavior and be instrumental in bringing my career goals, ambitions, and my dreams to fruition. The MHA program will allow me to conduct further research into the areas of stem cell research and total mechanical artificial heart replacement, making me that much more valuable. This is specifically the type of comprehensive cardiac and vascular care center management work that I seek to become engaged with post-graduation.

Upon building my exposure and seniority in health services management, I aim to fill a directorial position, working to bring about sustainable change in the field of organ transplantation. At the same time, I am planning to work as a graduate school professor, ideally with ____ College, giving back to my alma mater and bringing real-world examples and experiences to students in leadership training, aiding in their success, guaranteeing the future of ethics in the business world.

I bring with me to the student body an excellent foundation in Administration. Coupled with this, my own interest in the field of Health Services Management is steeped in individual experiences, namely my volunteer work; it was during this time that my cousin was waiting for a heart transplant. I happened to meet a man who would later become my husband, whose brother was waiting for a liver transplant, and my passion for organ donor awareness began. Our families have a history of requiring organ transplantation. Several of my family members are listed and waiting for lung and kidney transplants. Using my experience to promote organ donation, I have spearheaded five events educating and promoting organ transplant efforts, encouraging people to become organ donors, giving the gift of life to others.

From the time I graduated with my BS two decades ago, I have been involved in healthcare management, from office support to physician practice management, project management, revenue cycle re-design, marketing, and finance. Each of my positions has led logically to the next, demonstrating consistent progress in responsibilities and breadth of scope of experiences. These experiences, the practical, combined with classroom theory and practicum will aid me invaluably in my ambitions. I feel that my ability to apply theoretical analysis to practical healthcare management situations will shed light on many other students' own methodologies, as I learn from theirs.

At the same time, as a first-generation Italian American, I have a worldview that is quite different from my academic peers. I do not mention this simply to increase the diversity of the student body. I have developed an ability to interact effectively with not only my fellow colleagues, but since having experienced life as an immigrant, I feel particularly sensitive to the needs of many minorities. Coupled with this is my ability to speak two languages fluently and travels to Mexico, Europe and throughout the Caribbean, both the developed and emerging world. As a result, I can speak confidently in front of groups of people and am extremely comfortable in my own skin while celebrating the differences that make us all unique.

There is a need to reach out to our diverse clients, to understand and appreciate our differences, be it cultural or socioeconomic, an appreciation of the rich tapestry of life that we are all a part of on earth. A future Health Services manager needs to be able to interact effectively with people of differing cultures, ethnicities, nationalities, and creeds. This is critically important given the vast influx of person with varied backgrounds into America's healthcare system. Given my cultural competency, I feel I will be completely adept at reaching out to my diverse clients, no matter their country of origin. This is what I bring to the student body, as well, one in which I anticipate many opportunities for group assignments, teamwork and projects.

____ College is my sole choice for furthering my education. I hope to learn from the highly experienced faculty and accomplished student body. I look forward to sharing my own analyses, testing others, and coming to unexpected conclusions and learning that much more from the collective meeting of ambitious minds. I completely embrace the fact that there is more than one leadership method, that there is ample room for improvement in my own style and what better place to learn such lessons than in the classroom, where the consequences of failure do not translate into inefficiency or systemic failure. It is in the classroom where our missteps can be turned into learning experiences, and in study time, we can reflect on our interactions, integrating them into our own distinctive path. I look forward to a continued relationship with ____ and thank you for your time and consideration.
