I have reached a point in my scholastic and professional careers where I have exhausted every path of challenge and opportunity at my current academic level. Ever since completing my BFA, I have believed that the ideal would be to complete my MFA. Having built my exposure in the field, I am more confident than ever that the next step, the logical step, is so much more; it is a natural choice. Turning to __U is a decision born of wanting to develop myself not just as an artist but as an art educator. These past few years, I have found that the art classroom is where I need to be. XXXX U's Art Department and graduate program is the ideal environment to refine my art and mind, exposing me to innovative ideas, diverse artists, and their art. I bring an openness to innovative ways of getting my thoughts to my medium and execution. While my portfolio has concentrated on glass, particularly stained glass, glass painting, warm glasswork, mold making, and techniques in combination, I am particularly interested in seeing how my visual vocabulary translates in other mediums, such as metalwork and or jewelry. This will also make me more versatile as a practicing artist, allowing me to incorporate jewelry and metalwork techniques into my foundation in the glass. Earning my MFA will not only refine my abilities, expose me to new mediums, broaden my ability to express myself effectively through visual art, but also bring my dreams to fruition, teaching art at a college or university. My passion for teaching is evident through my years of classroom exposure, bringing not only a love of art to burgeoning artists but also a love of interacting with students that challenge you to think in ways you had not considered before. Through this interaction, I have grown as a teacher and artist, increasing my creative approaches to the learning process. Furthermore, equipped with an MFA and the experiences and development thereof, I will be able to bring, with confidence, relevant work to the art world and even commercial endeavors. I want to get thought-provoking and functional stained glass to private homes and commercial/public buildings alike. Wherever opportunities and life's path take me, I cannot see a future for myself without teaching as well. Personally, and spiritually, I must be involved in the creation and teaching of art. I have taught several summer art camps for children aged 5-12 and stained-glass techniques to adults. Throughout these experiences, I have learned patience, an excellent work ethic, and how to maintain classroom discipline and interact effectively with people of differing backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses. This will be invaluable as I enter the art world and eventually teach art. I want to keep my medium practiced and alive. To this end, I have taken several classes, including glassblowing and lampworking. I am currently combining techniques, such as relief work, warm glass and sandblasting and/or glass painting. I look forward to my time with XXXX U, my future of sharing my love of art with others and creating a lasting and meaningful body of works that will inspire generations to come. Thank you for your time and consideration. MFA Art Spirituality Creation Advancing as an Artist and Educator
- Personal Statement for BSC in Veterinary Medicine in the UK
By studying Veterinary Medicine I will be able to fulfil my desire to work closely with both people and animals. It will also consolidate my knowledge of science, allowing it to grow further. I am aware of the challenges posed by this vocation, but there is great satisfaction to be gained from working in animal welfare. The work experience that I have completed and enjoyed has further convinced me that Veterinary Medicine is a progressive profession with new developments constantly being made that will provide lifelong interest. I have spent a total of five weeks at five veterinary practices, covering small animals, large animals, equine and exotic animals. At these practices I was allowed to watch operations, was able to assist in some of the pre-operative procedures and go on farm visits. I was able to learn about milking and the various aspects of dairy and poultry farming during my two weeks at Mill Farm. A week of caring for lambs, several days on a pig farm and another week at a racing stable provided very worthwhile close contact with a variety of animals. From this work I have gained a clear understanding of the farmer's point of view, e.g. the difficulties many farmers face in maintaining a viable business whilst meeting the mandatory requirements for animal welfare. At the Veterinary Laboratories Agency, I learnt about dealing with samples from postmortem and histology. I have spent a day at an abattoir and for 10 months I have volunteered at the Blue Cross. I have also attended the Vetsix and Vetsim courses, gaining a Marine Mammal Medic certificate. Apart from my studies, I pursue many other interests. In the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, I have achieved Bronze and Silver Awards and am currently finishing the Gold. I am also a Millennium Volunteer, having completed one hundred hours voluntary work in August 2003 (BTCV conservation work). Now I am working towards a 200-hour goal. I am a dedicated athlete and particularly enjoy horse riding, skiing, and karate. In the latter I soon hope to obtain my green belt. Music is also a great passion for me. I play the flute and am working towards Grade 6. I am the lead flute in the school's Concert Band and am the Music Coordinator for my house, organizing practices and encouraging younger students to participate in the yearly competition. This year I have been appointed a member of the school's sixth form council with specific duties to represent Year 9, bringing student concerns to the attention of staff. This has been an effective way of improving my teamwork skills. I also help to run Amnesty International/Youth Action as human rights is something I feel strongly about. I support the environmental club as well, having helped to set up a recycling campaign. My keen interest in reading and English has inspired my involvement in the school Newsletter, which enables me to unleash my more creative side. All these activities are helping me to develop my interpersonal skills and I am constantly striving to improve in communication, tactfulness, patience, and maturity - qualities that I believe are vital for a career in veterinary medicine. Adaptability and open-mindedness are two of my strengths. I have previously been abroad, which has given me flexibility and appreciation of diverse cultures, as well as a love of travel. I anticipate going to university as an opportunity to further expand my learning, my horizons, to meet colleagues and to become involved. Personal Statement for BSC in Veterinary Medicine in the UK

I have chosen to study Computer Science because I am fascinated by how computers work, and I spend most of my spare time designing programs and web pages because I enjoy problem solving and logical thinking. My ambition is to work in programming for a large corporate company, working as part of a team to maximise their IT potential. I enjoy designing web pages and a prototype website for a software development company called Geologix. This involved writing the text for the site and adding icons so that visitors could download software. I created a members' area using passwords and used various programmes to set up graphics flashpoints. I also liaised with the senior partners to make sure that the site fulfilled the requirements of the company. In the summer of 2002, I worked for McDonalds. This gave me experience in dealing with money, ensuring hygiene standards, and dealing with difficult customers. This also developed my communication skills, sense of responsibility and my determination to carry on with higher education! During my time at McDonalds, I managed the branch's accounts database which also involved correcting faults in the system to ensure reliability/ My main extra-curricular interest is sport. I have been Capitan of ____ College hockey teams and Capitan of ____ school hockey team. Being a captain has taught me leadership skills and how to work positively with others to motivate and encourage. I have also played table tennis for Norfolk and Norwich, and I won first prize for my research and presentation on the history of table tennis, which awarded me the Howell Prize. Apart from sport, I was voted onto the Principal's Council, which meant liaising between the head teacher and the student body, in which my role also meant organising charity events to help raise money for the school. I have completed some volunteer work helping at the Norfolk Show, overseeing the horse enclosure, and ensuring its safety. This further developed my sense of teamwork and responsibility. I am determined to study Computer Science at degree level to fulfil my ambition to work in the IT job sector and I know that the course will enable me to thoroughly enjoy my time at university. My work experience has shown me that Computer Science is the ideal course for me, and I would also look forward to contributing to the sporting activities of the university, particularly in hockey. I am passionate about everything to do with computers and would feel completely dedicated to furthering my studies at a higher level. BSC Computer Science Personal Statement, A Passion for Technology

From as early as I can remember, I have always had a fascination with computers and the way in which they work. Computer science is thus the natural progression for me as I continue to define the person I want to become in later life. As a person who manages to mix a good working rate with an interesting and diverse social life, University life is something that would suit me, and be something to which I could contribute. My general enjoyment of computing inspired me to teach myself the programming languages Java and C++ to an advanced level and am currently working towards gaining a solid background with Delphi and Pascal. Combined with my studies of Mathematics and Physics, I have been able to support my programming with a solid knowledge of how basic electronics work, and a background of mathematics, which has become integrated into my programming and studying of computers, while reading Computers Ltd: What they really can't do, by David Harel, allowed me to gain insight into the limits of computing. Having worked with the ICT technician at Mundella Primary School, to set up both wireless and hard-wired networks for over fifty computers, I have gained the chance to see a real-life application of ICT within a workplace, confirming my basic career path - to work around an ICT environment. Outside of the school-working environment, I have participated in many extracurricular activities. As a member of the school rugby first, and pack leader, I have been able to develop my ability to work in a team of people, capable of taking the lead and demonstrating initiative. Alongside this, I have been taking part in my local Taekwon Do club and have achieved 8th Kup. This has allowed me to develop and mature as a person, adding discipline into my life. Regularly going to my local Gym has also become a part of my life, allowing me to maintain the fitness level required for both the rugby team, and taking part in Taekwon Do competitions, on a competitive level. The LAMDA Drama Bronze Medal in, which I achieved Distinction, allowed me to develop social skills, and the ability to talk in public, as I later entered the "David Starkey Public Speaking Competition, in which I competed against other peers, both writing and reading a speech. Alongside this, I have been working in NEXT, a clothing shop in my local city, in which I have gained social skills, while working in a team. Computer technology has always been something that I have been intrigued by, from my very first Atari to the small home network that I now manage. Over the years my interest in the world of computer technology has grown to the Internet and I have decided that I would eventually like a career in this field and a university degree would help. The Internet has fascinated me for some time now, from web page design to computer security. The idea that any information is easily and rapidly accessible from any connected computer terminal in the world is fascinating. The computer world is expanding rapidly, and I feel that nowadays, more than ever before, it is important to keep up with the new technological advances, as these are the future. I am extremely fortunate to be studying Information Technology in a specialised technology college, which has national recognition, as it is also a Beacon School and the only Learning Network Community with radio WAN equipment in the region. Thus, I have access to the most up to date equipment. Problem solving and being able to use figures can be a big part of computer technology and this is one of the reasons why I took Physics as an A Level and Math's to AS Level - to improve the quality of my problem-solving skills. In 2000 I went on work experience to two business venues in Liverpool, namely Merseycabs' offices and Bleinheim Guest house. I used the computer systems for tasks such as booking customers' rooms at the hotel and editing taxi drivers' records at Merseycabs. Although the work that I did on computers was basic and did not specifically concern the Internet I feel that it has helped me to recognize how the business world uses computers for everyday tasks. I have also gained experience with computers through the Young Enterprise programme, during which I was IT Director of the company and had many responsibilities, such as taking care of the company website and processing online orders, which has helped me to realise the responsibility of meeting deadlines, as when deadlines were not met the whole company was let down and not just the individual. During this marketing experience we visited primary schools, where I presented a PowerPoint presentation on the importance of healthy eating to promote our product. The product produced was a recipe book with contributions from famous local and international stars like Michael Owen and Dame Mary Peters. Our company enjoyed much success, winning a trip to the European Trade Fair in Brussels, and being featured on many occasions in the media and winning an award for best customer service. This experience has improved my confidence, as well as giving me an insight into the world of marketing and promotion. Being in three school plays has also added to my confidence, and I am more prepared for public speaking. In the summer of last year, I attended a volunteer course for the Commonwealth Games, which consisted of first aid training and dealing with emergencies, I learnt how every detail of an event such as the Commonwealth Games must be planned out and implemented with extreme care to avoid problems. In my spare time I enjoy going to ice skating lessons, going to the cinema with friends and, of course, surfing the Web. I also like to design Macromedia Flash presentations and websites. Both the academic and social side of university life appeal to me and it is one of my ambitions to experience university student life firsthand. As I look forward to my dreams, I see myself as a confident, successful businessperson with a university degree and a computer related career. Can you help me make my dream a reality? My approach to life's challenges is one of perseverance; the harder the problem that I am faced with, the more determined I am to solve it. When I first started to experiment with programming it was incredibly satisfying to see my hard work begin to take shape and this only encouraged me to further branch out to new languages and use more elaborate techniques. From this simple beginning I set my sights on a career in the computing industry, and many years later I still have no doubt whatsoever that is exactly where I want to be. From a low-key debut with HTML and CSS, my love of programming and dedication to the subject ensured that it wasn't long until I was experimenting with server-side scripting and relational databases. As my confidence grew, I was given the opportunity to create small scripts for projects owned by a group of like-minded peers and not long after, I began my first full-scale venture; a canine simulation game that used a script to create unique images on the fly. Being a logical thinker, I have always been in my element around subjects such as Mathematics with Mechanics and Physics and enjoy applying my knowledge to analyze and solve complex problems. Creativity is also particularly important to me, particularly with regards to dealing with challenges, so in my second year of A-Level study I took up an additional AS in Design Technology to further develop these skills. The reasons behind my desire to study Computer Science are that I would like to expand my existing knowledge of programming and learn to apply it in various applications such as Artificial Intelligence, games, and software development. I feel that having a good insight as to how a computer operates and deals with data would provide me with a solid base in understanding errors and the best ways to optimize code. I have opted for a year in industry to develop my ability to work both as part of a team and independently and to translate my education into productivity in a working environment. One inspirational aspect of computing that fascinates me is the ability that many ingenious pioneers have taken existing technology and used it in innovative ways, for example when Johnny Lee used Wii mote technology to turn any screen into an interactive whiteboard. Working on a project that has the potential to provide benefit or entertainment to others gives me a real sense of satisfaction, and I'm looking forward to developing programs that have the prospect of being used worldwide. As an active person I jump at the chance to get involved with extracurricular activities, and last year I took on a significant role in a Young Enterprise team. As Head of ICT, I was tasked with creating the designs for the product as well as several marketing aids such as business cards and a functional and informative website. I was able to work well within my team and was able to take on a leadership role from time to time. I am a very able individual and can work well on my own without being prompted, shown by my independent study of Further Mathematics during my final year of Sixth Form. In my spare time I enjoy experimenting in the kitchen (much to the dismay of my parents). I also have a deep interest in the natural world around me, and like spending time outdoors and watching documentaries. Later in life I intend to travel the world and visit places such as the Alps, or the ruins of Machu Picchu. Exploring Artificial Intelligence Sample Personal Statement for BSC in the UK

Having reached a point in my career where I feel I have exhausted every avenue of challenge at my current academic level, I am eager to embark upon a quality XXX. program of study with XXX. Indeed, I have maintained over a decade of conceptual continuity in my teaching career and dedication to the unique needs of children both in traditional classroom settings and in alternative education where I have included yoga and meditation techniques. These myriad experiences have left me wanting to give even more and expand upon my theoretical understanding of Clinical Psychology, and particularly an elective concentration in Neuropsychology. Throughout my professional and volunteer work, I have been attracted to and increasingly experimented with providing holistic methods for therapeutic and educational purposes. I have seen the need to further explore such therapies under the expert guidance of amazing faculty and access to exceptional resources, including the incorporation of yoga therapy for autistic children and meditation practices to provide a sustainable foundation of skills for children with XXX, as well as neuroscientific methods. Completing a XXX. program in Clinical Psychology will fully equip me to bring my plans to fruition. Combined with my abilities in Spanish, I am intent upon maintaining a private practice and serving the community as a bilingual neuropsychologist; I already complete bilingual psycho-educational evaluations for my school district and private agencies. However, my private practice will emphasize not only partnerships with public schools, hospitals and community agencies and organizations and advocacy but will include yoga therapy and other meditative practices. And yet, all of this sounds so clinical compared to my passion for bringing compassionate care to all members of society, levels of society and cultures, the dedication of energy, time, and love of my work as a role model and active participant in a multicultural society. Growing up a minority in the inner city, I am intimately aware of the issues facing youth: acculturation, poverty, childcare inadequacies, racism, discrimination, and language issues. Moreover, my travels throughout Europe as a Fullbright Scholar and with the XXX program have only increased my ability to communicate effectively with people from varying cultures, creeds, and belief systems. I bring with me to XXXX's student body an excellent foundation from which to conduct my XXX research, a foundation that includes being mentored by a XXX certification board member and clinical psychologist, working with an alternative education XXX and United Nations consultant, as well as my volunteer yoga instruction for special needs children. Fielding is my sole choice for academic development, and I foresee continuing with XXXX to complete my postdoctoral certificate in neuropsychology. Thank you for your time and consideration. The University of XXXX Online Master of Health Administration Program is my first choice among Online MHA Programs for a variety of reasons. I am drawn to Pennsylvania because I grew up there although I now live in North Carolina. I also appreciate the fact that your program is one of the first, fully accredited CAHME online programs and I see your curriculum as particularly appropriate for someone with my special interests: health promotion, healthcare information systems, and public/community health projects. The fact that I earned a degree in medicine is probably both the strongest and weakest part of my application. While I failed at my goal of becoming a doctor, my studies and experiences in medicine will be of enormous value for the balance of my professional life as a health professional. While I was unsuccessful at earning a passing score on the USMLEs despite several attempts, I did come within a few points of passing; thus, I have a wealth of knowledge in medicine that will always serve me well as a hospital administrator. My father was a Cardiologist, and I spent a lot of time in his clinic while I was growing up. I grew up in fact shadowing my father, because we have always been close, and he always worked long hours as a doctor. He was my foremost inspiration and cheerleader. Recently he told me that I will become a first-rate health administrator. Now 32 years old and a businessperson, it has taken me a while to fully understand where my professional destiny lies. With the value of hindsight, I now better understand how the part that I appreciated most of all about the experience of being raised by a loving and fully engaged father who was also a doctor, were the patients, the people, the public relations, and business aspects of medical practice. My central long-term goal is to become the CEO of a hospital and in this way be able to make my maximum contribution to my community. My last two years have been spent fully immersed in the business world and this has helped me to better appreciate the fact that my greatest strengths lie in the area of administration, the coordination, inspiration, and management and people and teams, keeping them happy, organized, operating within budget; keeping channels of communication open, LISTENING, understanding, and finding common ground for compromise concerning priorities of team members. My most relevant professional experience, that which has most prepared me for excellence in your MHA Program at the University of XXXX, are the 11 years that I spent in support of the (my father’s?) Cardiology Clinic in Danville, VA (2000-2011). In addition to being the EKG Technician on call 24/7, I managed the billing and coding as well as insurance. I ran and managed all our medical equipment, balancing, calibrating, and recording hemodynamic data, collecting data, educating patients, and maintaining their records in accordance with HIPAA. In 2014 I decided to learn something new and vastly broaden my experience in the business world to prepare myself for a career in management. Thus, I began working at XXXX Sporting Goods, an area which I see as very much related to medicine as we increasingly come to better appreciate as doctors and health care workers the fundamental importance of exercise, and the health value of time spent exercising, especially outdoors. It pleases me greatly to be earning money as a manager at the same time that the teams that I manage make important daily contributions to public health, helping people to get fit and thus radically reduce the chances of being stricken by a chronic disease, since exercise helps to prevent everything from diabetes to cancer. The greatest single experience when I was abroad as a medical student was the opportunity to serve as a group leader among my peers in the organization of medical relief efforts for the underserved. I learned then that I was capable of tackling and solving a wide range of issues involved with the setting up of weekly clinics in many of the underserved communities on our Caribbean Island. I see hosting community events as of especially critical importance and look forward to always staying engaged in efforts to raise consciousness about issues in global medicine, supporting missions to less privileged parts of the world. The Caribbean will always be with me. Thank you for considering my application to the University of XXXX. Online MHA Program Technology Personal Purpose

Every ceiling becomes the platform for the next level; having worked as a nursing professional in the clinical and research setting, I am ready for the next level in my career. Enrolling in the Master's in Public Health Program at the University of XXXX would provide me with a broader platform with which to improve the quality of life experienced by those afflicted by illness. Born and raised in Columbia, I have traveled through Central and South America and am aware of the health and economic challenges facing the Global South. A post-graduate qualification in public health will allow me to be effective as a credible voice for positive improvement to existing health programs. Having graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Columbia twenty years ago and specializing in marketing, I spent the 90’s in product development as a successful marketing director. Switching sectors in the last decade by completing an associate degree in nursing and practicing as a licensed registered nurse was warranted given the last five years in which I flourished in the discipline. Two years in clinical research exposed me to a different aspect of nursing, affording me the opportunity to combine knowledge acquired from years in product development with skills acquired as a registered nurse. My choice to enroll in the Master of Public Health program at University of XXXX is motivated by my wanting to improve health conditions in communities that do not have access to adequate health care. I am an excellent candidate for the program because I am dedicated, hard-working and passionate about helping communities. I also have insight into the economic and infrastructural processes required to accomplish sustainable change. This program would allow me to relate to professionals who share my goals at a colleague and Faculty level. I am interested in researching public health programs in infectious diseases like HIV-related disease. My long-term goal is to work with organizations that provide access to health care in underdeveloped countries. Being fluent in both English and Spanish and having lived in two different countries, I have the capacity to relate to communities from diverse cultural backgrounds. I trust that you will afford me the opportunity to join this program so that I can take this next step in my journey in serving communities and countries in need of care. I was raised in In Commack, New York and now reside in West Babylon. I hold a bachelor's degree in special education from XXXX College. In addition to my professional duties, I have undertaken substantial volunteer work over the past 15 years including involvement in food drives, working in homeless shelters and working with the jobless. I feel a real empathy with the less privileged. I do what I can to assist both practically and emotionally. I have become increasingly aware that little separates members of ‘normal’ society from those who, for one reason or another ‘slip off its edges’. I believe that providing those who are marginalized with the knowledge that they are not so ‘apart’ as they may have come to believe is a vital step in helping them reclaim their part in society. Their company has often been inspirational to me personally and I have much to thank them for. The traffic has certainly been ‘two way’ in my voluntary activities. I have worked in the field of special education for the past 18 years. This was not merely a career choice but the response to a vocation to foster inclusion of those who struggle to undertake tasks that others may find easy. I feel privileged to have been able to fulfill this vocation and, as with my voluntary work, have gained and learned much from my students and their families. Most of my working life has been spent within schools, working with students suffering from autism and undertaking private work with them. I have also worked with emotionally disturbed ‘middle schoolers’ and with physically challenged children who suffered a variety of conditions such as cerebral palsy and genetic abnormalities and who required special methods of communication. I am regarded as an amazingly effective therapist and I know that this arises because I really do care, and care passionately, about my students and their families and I always seek to provide the absolute best outcomes possible for them and will ‘go the extra mile’ to achieve it. One of the main reasons for applying is that I have met several graduates of the program who have been colleagues and I have found them all to be exceptional and enthusiastic therapists. All were incredibly positive about their training, and I am very keen to share their educational experience. If successful, I hope to undertake research into the area of child language development. I am aware that the program will attract many professionally qualified applicants, but I feel that, in addition to my highly relevant professional and educational background, I possess a degree of passion for this subject that will be hard to match. Thank you for considering my application. MS SLP Speech-Language Pathology Personal Purpose

The outstanding SLP program at XXXX University is my first and only choice for graduate study. XXXX University is close to where I live; but I am also excited about the excellence of your program and would have been willing to travel if needed to have made this possible. XXXX University is also my alma mater, and I am very fond of the XXXX community. I especially appreciate our family stability because I was raised in a military family and moved around a lot as a young child. With each grade, I attended a different school growing up until high school. Nevertheless, this helped to strengthen my ability to make friends, and to get along well with people from all levels of society. When I was a sophomore in high school, my brother was born. By the time he became a toddler, we started to notice his lack of ability to communicate with us. He had temper tantrums, crying throughout the day because he was unable to communicate his needs to us. His speech therapist was wonderful and made his therapy fun for the whole family. After a few months, my brother was much happier and was communicating more effectively with us. Thus, I realized early on, that this was an outstanding professional position to have, and that I would love to become part of the speech-language pathology field, empowering individuals with the means to effectively communicate. My long-term goal is to continue working in special education as a speech-language pathologist. I do want my master's degree, however, so that I will be able to assume greater levels of responsibility and experience the fulfillment that accompanies professional advancement. One of the many reasons I love the field of speech-language pathology is the vast array of professional opportunities available, from our schools and clinics to medical institutions. I find the medical track of speech therapy to be undergoing amazing advancements. I would love the opportunity to participate in an off-campus clinical practicum in a hospital. I have 6 years' experience in two different non-public special education schools, and I am anxious to be challenged by new, real-world experiences in speech-language pathology. My ideal job would be to have my own practice here in the Baltimore area, working with other speech-language pathologists providing speech therapy to clients in need. Having my own practice would allow me to collaborate and learn from other speech-language pathologists to provide excellent speech therapy in our community. It is important to me that I continue to give back to my community. Becoming a speech-language pathologist is a journey that begins with your program but will last for the rest of my professional life. For over 6 years, I have been surrounded by those in the helping professions, such as teachers, social workers, psychologists, behavior specialists, and occupational therapists, as well as speech-language pathologists, and I have taken ample time to make the decision to dedicate my life to being the best speech-language pathologist that I can. My passion for your graduate program at XXXX was further accelerated when hearing on-campus practicum will be completed at a brand-new speech clinic located in a nearby community wellness center. XXXX University is where I earned my B.S. in speech-language pathology, and it is where I want to earn my M.S. in speech-language pathology as well. I want to thank you for considering my application. SLP Speech Therapy Personal Purpose Statement

British physician John Brown said it best when he said. It is not a case we are treating; it is a living, palpitating, too often suffering fellow creature. For me, this sentiment captures the role and responsibility of doctors not just in providing treatment to patients but also in living out their duty of care to their fellow citizens. My example is owning and operating a medical clinic, yet I was fully aware of my undertaking. I can recall the start of my journey on this career path. My family and I were ready to go out for dinner—one was upset at this interruption of our plans. The following week when I was at my apparent' clinic, a middle-aged man came with flowers and thanked my father for treating his wife the previous Sunday. I can still remember the gratitude in his eyes and the satisfaction on my dad's face. That was my first lesson on the nobility and responsibilities of this profession. As I grew older, my learning increased at my parents' clinic. Every time I witnessed the happiness of their patients, I promised myself I would one day be able to provide that same sense of relief to my patients. Highly motivated and well guided by my parents, I was determined to become a highly skilled doctor, I worked hard to get into medical school. In medical school, I was exposed to a multitude of disciplines; during clinical rotations, I was fascinated by the uniqueness of Psychiatry, how most of the anomalies in Psychiatric patients are of thought, feelings, and behaviors and are not measurable by equipment, that the tangible is secondary to what can only be sensed. The skill for diagnosis lies entirely within the doctor, their ability to accurately interpret the patient's feedback. I have always taken pleasure in the process of deducing a diagnosis from symptoms and clinical signs. During my intern year, four of us worked as a team under the guidance of our attending and immediately recognized the importance of teamwork, especially in the clinical setting. The interaction I have enjoyed with patients has always included educating them about their conditions. I found my most excellent satisfaction came from this interaction, soothing them and correcting their misconceptions about diseases and symptoms. One case that comes to mind is a patient with alcoholic cirrhosis. He was brought into the hospital in a state of confusion. He also had Wernicke's encephalopathy. The challenge was not in the diagnosis but in convincing him that the cause of his problems was excessive alcohol consumption. I took the time to sit with him, outlining the ill effects of alcohol. I helped him get into a support group and financial help through hospital social services. It is always highly satisfying to see my patients leave the hospital healthier than when they arrived. This patient's path to health was long, but at least he had started walking it. Being in southern India, I worked with a diverse range of patients from all economic fields and backgrounds. I must admit that mental health awareness among Indians is not impressive. I was not surprised to learn that patients, rich and poor alike, had many similar misconceptions and required counseling. I was privileged to work in several rural health campaigns that allowed me to exert a positive influence on the lives of several villagers. These interactions helped me better appreciate the critical importance of an empathetic and understanding approach along with excellent communication skills. WI was eager to learn about the US health care system; Iso pursued my Masters's in Public Health at West Virginia University. Here I had an opportunity to experience the research aspects of the health field. Under the guidance of Dr. XXXX, I worked on a project to evaluate the readiness of the people in the community to adopt Enhance Fitness (an exercise program for people with arthritis). During the implementation phase of this project, I monitored participant enrollment for the exercise classes and their physical activity, using accelerometers. During the final year of my MPH program, I chose a similar project for my practicum. I correlated objective (accelerometers) and subjective (CHAMPS Questionnaire) methods of measurement of physical activity. This project allowed me to understand the reliability of the ways of size and their usefulness for patients with arthritis. Experience the clinical health care system nearby; I worked as an observer in the University of XXXX Medical Branch and at XXXX University. I had an opportunity to observe various methods and approaches to patient care in the clinic and the daily rounds and get first-hand knowledge of technical advances in healthcare. I could attend clinical conferences and grand rounds, which helped me further strengthen my ability. This opportunity solidified my appreciation for and understanding of the US healthcare system. British physician John Brown had it right: it is not a case we are treating but a fellow creature. To become a great physician, one should be proficient in many aspects of health care in addition to academics. Proceeding from the ethos Brown articulated, I have determined that my future lies in Psychiatry, and I am eager to take up the challenge and join in a rewarding and fascinating future for myself and the overall benefit of my future patients. As a Psychiatrist, I will be not only aiding my patients in their lives but also their loved ones, giving them back a loving, functioning, and healthier participant in their lives. Given the opportunity, I can assure you that I will be a strong asset and a worthy addition to your program. I very much appreciate your consideration of my application to join your program.
