The outstanding SLP program at XXXX University is my first and only choice for graduate study. XXXX University is close to where I live; but I am also excited about the excellence of your program and would have been willing to travel if needed to have made this possible. XXXX University is also my alma mater, and I am very fond of the XXXX community. I especially appreciate our family stability because I was raised in a military family and moved around a lot as a young child. With each grade, I attended a different school growing up until high school. Nevertheless, this helped to strengthen my ability to make friends, and to get along well with people from all levels of society.
When I was a sophomore in high school, my brother was born. By the time he became a toddler, we started to notice his lack of ability to communicate with us. He had temper tantrums, crying throughout the day because he was unable to communicate his needs to us. His speech therapist was wonderful and made his therapy fun for the whole family. After a few months, my brother was much happier and was communicating more effectively with us. Thus, I realized early on, that this was an outstanding professional position to have, and that I would love to become part of the speech-language pathology field, empowering individuals with the means to effectively communicate.
My long-term goal is to continue working in special education as a speech-language pathologist. I do want my master's degree, however, so that I will be able to assume greater levels of responsibility and experience the fulfillment that accompanies professional advancement. One of the many reasons I love the field of speech-language pathology is the vast array of professional opportunities available, from our schools and clinics to medical institutions. I find the medical track of speech therapy to be undergoing amazing advancements.
I would love the opportunity to participate in an off-campus clinical practicum in a hospital. I have 6 years' experience in two different non-public special education schools, and I am anxious to be challenged by new, real-world experiences in speech-language pathology. My ideal job would be to have my own practice here in the Baltimore area, working with other speech-language pathologists providing speech therapy to clients in need. Having my own practice would allow me to collaborate and learn from other speech-language pathologists to provide excellent speech therapy in our community. It is important to me that I continue to give back to my community.
Becoming a speech-language pathologist is a journey that begins with your program but will last for the rest of my professional life. For over 6 years, I have been surrounded by those in the helping professions, such as teachers, social workers, psychologists, behavior specialists, and occupational therapists, as well as speech-language pathologists, and I have taken ample time to make the decision to dedicate my life to being the best speech-language pathologist that I can.
My passion for your graduate program at XXXX was further accelerated when hearing on-campus practicum will be completed at a brand-new speech clinic located in a nearby community wellness center. XXXX University is where I earned my B.S. in speech-language pathology, and it is where I want to earn my M.S. in speech-language pathology as well.
