An Arab woman from Saudi Arabia and a doctor, I completed Medical School at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, where I was born and raised. Jeddah is the most international city in the KSA, and diversity and multiculturalism have long been close to my heart. My sense of the practice of medicine as a global enterprise and my devotion to the cause of helping the underserved have blossomed because of my own international experience so far, completing a residency in Anesthesia in Germany and more recently giving my all to a one-year fellowship program in Obstetric Anesthesia in Canada. Now that I have become an accomplished physician, especially in the area which most arouses my passion, Obstetric Anesthesia, I seek to enhance my skills in research. To this end, I hope very much to be selected to study for the Master’s Degree in Clinical Research at XXXX University.
XXXX University is my first choice for graduate study because of both the location and the sheer excellence of your program. I am a good fit for your rigorous schedule. I hope to distinguish myself in your master's program at XXXX University focused on Obstetric Anesthesia. My research interest, an area that I have been exploring intensively for some time, is obesity in obstetric patients and what can be done for or with these patients to preserve the w of mother and baby alike. I am also keenly engaged with ongoing research into intraoperative warming during cesarean delivery, its impact on both mother and newborn and the analysis of how best to encourage anesthetists to use active warming methods in cesarean deliveries.
After returning home to Jeddah, I look forward to giving the bulk of my professional life to research and teaching. This is why my short-term goal of earning the master's degree in clinical research at XXXX University is central to my long-term plans, distinguishing myself on the forefront of research in Obstetric Anesthesia and Research Methodology, teaching both subjects. Saudi Arabia lags far behind Western Medicine in medical research, especially in Obstetric Anesthesia. Medical schools offer little-to-no special training at all in this area of medicine, and there are very few obstetric anesthesiologists in Saudi Arabia.
At some point, I hope to be instrumental to and make essential contributions to the development of a fellowship program in Obstetric Anesthesia in my country so that we can train highly skilled obstetric anesthesiologists at home, in addition to those small numbers that are fortunate enough to be able to receive advanced training abroad. Central to my professional identity is caring for women who are giving birth. I want to be there for them. While I see research as essential, I will always continue to practice two highly complementary sides of the same coin. In Canada, I have been involved in two research projects, one of them a case report which will soon be published, and the other is a prospective randomized controlled study. I keenly look forward to decades to come, investigating the best ways we can improve and safeguard the lives of mothers and their babies throughout the childbirth process in Saudi Arabia. Earning a master's degree in clinical research will provide me with a solid foundation in state-of-the-art research.
