A 21-year-old Latina, I was born in Chicago, Illinois but raised in Puerto Rico. I will graduate this coming May of 2011 from XXXX University in San Juan with an undergraduate degree in Speech Therapy. My mom is Colombian, my dad is from Puerto Rico, and I am the eldest of two siblings—the first in my family to attend college. I found my career path three years ago at the age of 18, when I began to tutor special needs children (Down syndrome, learning disabilities, mental retardation etc.) in our community. Within a short time, I knew that I wanted to devote myself to a career as a Speech and Language Pathologist. I look forward to specializing in bilingual and Spanish speaking students with communication disabilities. I am especially fascinated by the fact that various studies have shown a prevalence of speech and language disorders among Hispanic adolescent delinquents. This suggests a critical socialization component to speech disorders among Latino children that needs to be further explored. I look forward to working with Latino children and adolescents, especially those who are defined as ‘at risk’. I very much want to attend your program to learn what I will need to know to someday open my own school for students with special communication needs in Puerto Rico employing multidisciplinary groups composed of occupational therapists, psychologists, and special education teachers as well as speech pathologists. I have found it very difficult to find speech therapy material in Spanish; thus, much of the material that I am currently using I have made myself and plan to continue to do so. I started my clinical practicum this semester in a private school that specializes in students with special needs. I have 5 students with articulation, voice, or language disorders and most of them have learning disabilities combined with mental retardation. I especially enjoyed doing extensive research on Turner syndrome as well as pre-practice with an autistic student and I profoundly appreciated my clinical practice with a 22-year-old girl with moderate mental retardation for an entire semester. I anticipate having the privilege of doing research in your program on the special speech therapy needs of Spanish language children living in the US. I am a hard-working person, very perseverant and passionate about my work. I am also a fast learner, humble and determined. My goal is to help children learn to communicate in the most effective way possible so that they will have social and professional opportunities in life. My first choice for graduate school is Northwestern University because of their outstanding program in Speech and Language Pathology and the opportunity they give to their students to do their clinical practicum in various sites and environments throughout the Chicago area. I appreciate the focus of your program on the importance of early intervention up to age three, as well as on neurogenic disorders. Because I was born in Chicago, I have had this dream of coming back to help other Hispanic kids like me to communicate more effectively in a foreign language. A diligent, hardworking student, and community activist, I come from two special and marginalized populations that are well represented in California: refugees and immigrants from Central America and the LGBTQ community. I was raised by a single mother, an immigrant from Guatemala who worked as a housekeeper while I was growing up in an urban Southern California environment. My school life was difficult from the beginning. Between Spanish being my first language and my mother working long hours, I oftentimes felt lonely. As a gay, Hispanic man, I suffered a great deal from bullying in school because of my feminine characteristics and disposition. From elementary through middle school, I was called terrible names and sometimes physically assaulted. This experience affected my ability to perform my best in school; and in the end, it resulted in me being retained in the fifth grade. A school psychologist would have been very beneficial for me. Someone to talk to about my problems. Someone who could have advocated on my behalf with the teachers, to let them know how I was struggling. Fundamental to my choice of career is my desire to protect children and youth from the kind of abuse that I endured in school and be a source of support. By my junior year, I had dropped out of high school. Disenchanted with education, I just wanted a paycheck to help my mother. If I had had someone to turn to for school support, my destiny might have been different. I might have excelled academically much earlier on. As it was, after leaving high school, I spent a decade working in retail, sorting and folding clothes, cleaning, etc. Although I eventually became a supervisor, it would have been much better to have entered college sooner. Nevertheless, I did make it back to school, earning my high school diploma and Associate of Arts Degree at the age of 27. During my time at the University of California Irvine, I volunteered in an after-school program for students from low-income families, located in the same area where I grew up and went to school. Thus, it was a pleasure to help K-12 predominantly Hispanic/Latinx students from my community. I also participated in an education abroad program at UCI and was able to study for one semester at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, further enhancing my appreciation for multilingual and multiethnic society, where my worldviews, multilingual capacity, and celebration of diversity and multicultural competence were heightened even further. Now, I am close to finishing my master’s degree in School Psychology. This makes me the first individual in my family to attend college and the first to rise to the level of post-graduate education. As a Latino member of the LGBT community, I look forward to contributing to diversity in my profession. Optimistic about the prospect of excelling in your program and making important contributions to class discussions concerning educational research, I will arrive all fired up for the many fascinating multicultural and multilingual experiences that I look forward to sharing with my peers. My identity and life experiences have influenced me to research and explore areas relating to culturally and linguistically diverse students. For my dissertation, I would like to focus on the effects of the increasing numbers of minorities entering the field of School Counseling, as both students and professors, reviewing the arguments dealing with the way that cultural and linguistic differences impact psychological and educational assessment, consultation, and academic and behavioral intervention. I hope to find ways to increase multicultural competent practices through research, analyzing factors of culture and race when making judgments about special-education eligibility decisions for ethnically and racially diverse students. I believe my experience and future goals align well with the mission of the Department of CCSP, helping to ensure diversity and inclusion in the achievement of academic excellence. I look forward to fully utilizing my unique experiences as tools for creative problem-solving from diverse perspectives. Sample Diversity Statement for Graduate School

I am a 27-year-old Indian man, born and raised in India and have lived in the United States for 2 years. I am fluent in Hindi and English. I finished dental school in India with a GPA of 3.7. My most formative experience occurred when I undertook Community Service as a student. I was exposed to close contact with those experiencing extreme poverty and saw the effect of their environment on their health. I helped in sorting donated medical supplies and in maintaining medical records at a local hospital. I resolved to do what I could to enhance the health and wellbeing of the poor at this time. The interaction with healthcare workers inspired me to pursue a degree in dental surgery from a leading dental teaching school in India. During my undergraduate studies, I took courses in Oral Epidemiology, Pathology and Microbiology which provided me with an understanding of oral and dental health. I assisted in the organization of free ‘Dental Camps’ in village communities in one of the very poorest areas of the country during which villagers were provided with dental care and taught about the maintenance of oral health. This was extremely rewarding work. In my final year, I interned at a dental clinic to provide me with further experience in community dentistry in addition to furthering my practical knowledge. I was involved in examining one patient with a pre-cancerous condition and urged him to stop smoking and chewing tobacco; I subsequently discovered that he had failed to take this advice and that cancer had resulted in fatal consequences. This incident confirmed my determination to promote health provision and education among the underprivileged. The Charter adopted at the inauguration of the UN General Assembly in 1948 states that the right to health is a fundamental one, yet after 60 years, two thirds of the world’s population is deprived of this right. My application for the MPA program arises from a passion for enhancing health education in underprivileged communities where access to it limited or non-existent, and to help me fulfill my ambition to join, or possibly to set up, an organization dedicated shaping and implementing public health policies. I have seen up close how much basic health care and health education is needed and how much and how rapidly it can affect lives, I am determined to be involved in helping to provide this and to do so as widely as possible. I believe that I have the background, academic ability and, most importantly, the passion and drive to profit from the MPA program. It is my hope to specialize in Health Administration. I believe that the management education that participation in the MPA program will provide is highly relevant to my purposes and will provide me with the very best management training and tools to achieve my goals. I am aware that this is a prestigious program and I know that it will attract very many highly qualified applicants. However, I believe that I can bring valuable and unique insights and perspectives from my experiences to the academic community. Thank you for considering my application. I first became interested in Speech and Language Therapy as a career opportunity through my mother's franchise of Tumble Tots in West Sussex, where many parents in the area were having trouble finding a speech therapist for their child. Having spent my whole life surrounded by younger children, I know well how communication is a vital skill. I believe it is wrong for these children and their families not to have access to speech therapy. I want to be able to help people who have difficulty with basic communication skills. I've gained valuable experience by attending talks by speech and language therapists and psychologists about the importance of Speech Therapy, what a career in Speech and Language Therapy is like and the mental health spectrum. I have also read relevant articles and watched videos by I CAN. These resources offered me the opportunity to fully understand what a career in Speech Therapy would be like and have increased my determination to achieve it. Since the beginning of July 2008, I have been volunteering at the Grace Eyre Foundation, Brighton, a day centre for adults with learning difficulties. I also take part in their Travel Buddy Scheme assisting a disabled lady to use public transport to get home so that she can have increased independence. Volunteering at Grace Eyre has shown me how Speech Therapy can improve someone's life greatly by giving them the opportunity to express themselves. At Grace Eyre I have been taking basic Makaton lessons which I have found a fantastic tool when trying to communicate with some of the people there. In July 2008 I volunteered for a week at the Care Co-ops Community Farm, East Sussex, which is maintained by adults with disabilities, both mental and physical. Whilst there I experienced how rewarding it is to help people with disabilities through having fun and being creative and this deepened my resolve to become a speech therapist. I have also worked with both able and disabled children; in June 2006 I did a week's work experience at Cumann Iosaef Community Pre-school, it allowed me to see the interaction between able and disabled children. I also helped to run a weekly sports club at Davigdor Infants School for 4 months in 2006 as part of my sports leader's qualification. On the 1st and 2nd of October 2008 I shadowed Speech Therapist Yamini Burghul at the Evelina Children's Hospital which was fascinating, I got so much out of my two days there and although some of the cases I saw were tragic the difference that Yamini was making to the children's lives was so apparent that it strengthened my resolve go into this career. I have also organized to shadow Speech Therapist Alison Eccles at Chailey Secondary School in January 2009. My A level choices give me a good understanding of different aspects of Speech and Language Therapy. In Human Biology I'm learning about the structure of the body and what can go wrong to cause speech or swallowing difficulties. Psychology lets me explore cognitive development further than I did in GCSE Child Development. I did a long-term study of the normal development of a child, looking at their physical, cognitive, emotional and social development and I achieved 102/105 marks for my study. Performing Arts is a subject that requires me to put in a lot of work and challenges me to be creative and outgoing. When working with children in Speech Therapy my experience from this subject will help lots. When I first considered Speech and Language Therapy, I was sure I would want to work with children, however, my work at Care Co-ops and Grace Eyre have shown me the importance of speech in adulthood and now feel that I could work in either field. My time at the Evelina Children's Hospital showed me how important Speech Therapy is and I know that it is the only career path I want to take. MA Speech & Language Therapy Personal Purpose UK

I am a young Saudi Arabian woman with a great passion for my work as a speech language pathologist and feeding clinician at King Fasial Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh Saudi Arabia. I now have a total of six years of experience including the year spent completing my internship. During this period, I have had the pleasure of being trained and supervised by many accomplished and highly professional, certified speech language pathologists with master's degrees, some with a PHD. I have enjoyed immensely having the opportunity to apply my knowledge and skills in several different medical settings that have included intensive care units and both in-patient and out-patient settings. I have also practiced in a variety of different areas including pediatric and adult language delay and disorders, speech motor disorders, voice disorders, and dysphagia assessment and intervention. A graduate of King Saud University, I completed my four-year bachelor's degree in communication science and Audiology, then subspecialized in Speech Language Pathology. I also have extensive professional experience providing in-service lectures to other health care professionals about the role of speech language pathologists and the process of assessment and intervention for those patients with communication and swallowing difficulties, preparing assessment and treatment materials, and updating available clinic items and tests. I was designated as the first official representative of the Speech Language Pathology Department and an active member of the tracheotomy care workshop being held every month for the nurses in our center to improve the quality of the health care services that we provide. Throughout the course of my experience practicing in several different areas of speech language pathology, I have developed an especially keen interest in swallowing. As a result, perfecting the art of assessment and treatment in this area has become my central long-term goal. I wish to be one of the pioneers in this area in Saudi Arabia and to help clinics and centers to advance their treatment services for the broad range of our population that suffer from dysphagia and/or voice disorders. For both areas, we are in desperate need of developing standardized tests for the KSA to improve outcomes of both assessment and subsequent treatment. Both the study and treatment of swallowing disorders are in their infancy in the Middle East. In fact, there is a shortage of professionals and centers in the broader field of speech language pathology, throughout in the Middle East; as a result, it is impossible for us to provide adequate care to those who are in desperate need of rehabilitation services. The lack of highly trained faculty in our area has made it all but impossible to establish Doctoral or even master's programs in our field. Thus, I am very serious and passionate about my field because we have so much work that needs to be done in our part of the world. I am determined to do everything that I can to help establish well-structured speech & language rehabilitation programs throughout the region. The University of XXXX is my first choice for graduate study because of my profound admiration for the structure and design of your program and the unique way that it integrates, theoretical and methodological educational activities, on the one hand, with direct clinical contact on the other. I also very much appreciate the way that your program is recognized as a leader in the science of communication disorders. Finally, I am drawn to the research being conducted by several of your faculty members and feel very confident that the academic thrust of your program is precisely what I need to inspire me to engage in cutting edge research in the areas of swallowing after strokes and cancer related dysphagia. My central long-term goal after completing your program will be to establish specialized swallowing centers that cater to oncology and neurologically based disorders. I would also like to be a part of the educational process in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia and pass on the knowledge and experience that I hope to gain in your prestigious institute to students and junior speech language pathologists. My colleagues encourage me to pursue admission to your program based on my intense dedication to our work, enthusiasm, and perseverance. My work experience with King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center has allowed me to gain a clearer vision of what it is that I want for myself and the many patients that I plan to serve over the course of many decades to come. I ask for the opportunity to show you what I am capable of as a speech language pathologist. I keenly look forward to a most culturally enriching experience in your program, sharing the best of what we have learned with many other graduate students from all over the world, learning from each other through our unique case histories. Thank you for considering my application to your program. SLP Personal Purpose Speech Language Pathology

I now have eleven years' experience as an accountant and financial analyst and hold a senior position at IATCO, a Behemoth Distributor Company, handling products for several important companies doing business in Saudi Arabia, such as Procter and Gamble, Ferrero, Quaker, and Nestle International. My central and long-term goal is to teach, lead, and coach people in Business field in my country. My opportunities to make important contributions to business education and implementation in the KSA would be greatly enhanced if I were to earn the DBA Degree. The Doctor of Business Administration Program at XXXX University is my first choice for graduate education for a variety of reasons; most of all I feel that I am a good fit with your program because it offers the multidimensional courses and modern syllabi, as well as the opportunity to study under well-known scholars and academics. The diversity of the student body will afford me valuable interactions with a broad range of backgrounds and attitudes in business and I will be enabled to refine my technical skills in the leadership of projects and become more attuned to market trends and entrepreneurial opportunities. I especially look forward to a thorough exploration of the importance of fomenting policies that benefit small businesses, protecting them from faceless monopolies that compete unfairly with local interests. Saudi Arabia is at important crossroads in its integration into the global economy. I see your DBA Program at XXXX University to be an ideal location to study a broad gambit of international business issues from an equally broad variety of perspectives. This will prepare me to make my fullest contribution to my society as a leader in the business community, helping to stimulate small business operations. Food is important in Saudi society since eating is an almost ritual activity. Thus, as I an entrepreneur and interested in the food trade and food industry, I am treated with special respect and well positioned to become not only an industry leader but also to exercise leadership positions that reach beyond food and into commerce more generally speaking. As a young Chinese woman who is full of life and a very hard worker, I am sure that I want to have a long professional life that is full of both children and older people since both are an integral part of my personality and professional vision for making my most entire contribution to society, especially here in America, and perhaps also back in the country in which I was raised, Taiwan, at least at some point. I look forward to practicing professionally in both my languages, Mandarin Chinese and English. UX is my first choice for Graduate School in Human Development and Early Childhood Disorders not only because I am currently finishing my undergraduate studies in Speech and Language Pathology at UXX and very much love my school and its location, but also because of the sheer uniqueness and thoroughgoing, interdisciplinary nature of your program, focused on precisely the part of human nature that I wish to study. A student from China is learning everything she needs to know, not just about SLP issues and foundations but also about Dallas, which serves as a microcosm in which to also learn as much as I can about the diversity of American culture and society. Every professor in our SLP Department at UXX is exceptionally wealthy in knowledge. I keenly look forward to studying with some of them again at a graduate level once accepted into your Masters's Program in Human Development and Early Childhood Disorders. I appreciate your first-rate facilities at UXX and the numerous opportunities to do research and perform practicum. As an international student, I feel strongly that continuing as a graduate student at the same university where I finished my undergraduate studies will allow me to take full advantage of the time that I have invested in a social network of professional connections, many based in Dallas, which will also help me to excel. My younger brother has ADHD and a learning/reading disorder. Thus, I am already knowledgeable about many of the issues involved with childhood disorders and developmental challenges. I appreciate the vast effort and patience required by family members who I see as having an integral role and instrumental importance in meeting the unique needs of children with disabilities/disorders. I look forward to a highly in-depth study of why and how some parents take a very long time to realize that their child is different from their peers. I hope to contribute to increasingly early detections, when treatments realize their best results, providing the adequate foundation for the most entire and most satisfying lifestyle possible for the individual as they mature first to adolescence and then adulthood. I have always loved working with children. Since high school, I have volunteered as a religious teacher at our church. I spend time with kids every weekend, reading Bible stories, leading hymns, singing, and playing with the children. I also tutor elementary school students in my community, helping them with their homework, especially math problems. After I came to the USA for college, I worked as a teaching assistant at an afterschool Chinese learning center, helping to manage the class and teach students math and Chinese. Now, I am working at a dental office as a patient coordinator working with all ages, from infants only a few months old to some patients who are very elderly, and I thrive on this diversity. I take special pride in my ability to calm and play with the children in the waiting room, some of whom are awaiting treatment. I see every child as a gift from God. Thus, it will be a special honor for me to devote my life to supporting families as they face the challenge of having special children, helping those children and their families to live the fullest and most enriching lives possible. Probably the most vital aspect of my application to your distinguished SLP Program at XXXX University (UXX) is that I already have over two years of professional experience as an SLPA. From August 2013 through September 2015, I worked at a private clinic called XXX with students diagnosed with moderate to severe Autism, ranging in age from infants to 21 years of age. My current position as an SLPA also makes me most enthused about the prospect of graduate studies. Working at a medically based private practice and transitioning from one clinic to another has helped me become more adaptable, heightened my appreciation for diversity, and provided me with the invaluable opportunity of getting to know numerous professionals in my field. I graduated from XXXX University, Sacramento, with a B.S. in Speech Pathology and Audiology in May 2013. I chose this major because of my desire to serve my community and excel in this area. Throughout my childhood, I was heavily involved in community outreach programs through my local church, which brought me enormous joy and satisfaction, and this has helped to prepare me to take on leadership roles in SLP in the future as an organizer, mentor, tutor, in my church and community, as well as neighboring churches and communities. I fell in love with what I chose to do as an undergraduate student, giving my all as a behavioral tutor for children diagnosed with Autism, working closely with a wide variety of developmentally delayed children and their families. Every day I saw families suffer and struggle, break down, and lose hope. Coming from a military family with a professional ethic of discipline, I excelled every day because helping these families cope was something that I came to see as my duty, not unlike the patriotic calling felt by other family members. My work is essential to these families, and their need is very significant; I give my 120% every day to help them make progress towards living every day and fulfilling life. For the past 2 ½ years since my graduation, I have grown enormously personally and professionally, working as an SLPA, attending conferences, keeping in touch with professors, volunteering with the elderly in my community, and almost always reading the current literature in our field before I go to sleep at night. I work with many minorities and underprivileged families and do extensive research to familiarize myself with the characteristics of their unique struggles. This is especially important since I also provide home training and education. I look forward to a long lifetime of empowering Autistic and other developmentally challenged children and their families, providing them with the highest possible quality of care. I would love to someday open my private practice for children with significant delays in communication, and I look forward to many decades of interdisciplinary teamwork with social workers, OT professionals, psychologists, etc. I love the diversity I find in SLP and the richness of serving members of many distinct communities and walks of life. I also look forward to missionary service in SLP in the future, spending extended periods back in my native Philippines helping to train SLP professionals. As a Filipino woman, I feel called to this service on profoundly spiritual levels, even though I have spent my entire life in the USA. I am incredibly excited and already gearing up for all 4 of your specialized units, and I am especially hungry for long hours in the laboratory. Very passionate about multilingualism and diversity issues, I pay close attention to how they frequently play critical roles in SLP to provide the most effective therapy. I am already daydreaming about learning as much as possible about stroke and Aphasia, early intervention therapy, and catering to the unique needs of at-risk communities. Wholeheartedly dedicated to lifelong learning in Autism and the ASD population, I am provided with a great sense that my work is the noblest cause, particularly given how these populations have been increasing. Disciplined and very organized, I continuously learn through my service to my clients, whom I dearly love. I never want to stop learning, thinking, and creating because I find boundless joy in my work. Perennially cheerful and always resilient, if given a chance to receive an education on the cutting-edge at UXX, I will go that extra mile to excel and make full use of every tool and opportunity at my disposal. I have worked with various adults with AAC devices to program and teach the proper use of these communication devices. I love that UX supports AAC devices and tirelessly perfects their research and work in this area. It would be such an honor for me to have the privilege of joining your academic community in SLP at UXX and I thank you for considering my application to your program. From the experience that I have acquired to date in relating to those who suffer difficulties in speech communication, it is clear to me that it takes a particular type of person to treat speech disorders successfully; that empathy, determination, and enormous patience, together with substantial technical knowledge and skills are called for to achieve optimum outcomes. I believe that I possess these personal qualities and characteristics and am confident that I have the academic capability to excel in the program and beyond it. My goal is to work with adults in a hospital setting and pursue research in the areas of Aphasia and Dysphasia, eventually pursuing a Ph.D. In the summer of 2015, I shadowed a Speech Pathologist at the VA hospital in XXXX, IL. I observed tracheotomies and esophagus valve replacements. I also attended therapy sessions for clients suffering from dysphagia and aphasia, including swallow tests. This provided an opportunity to witness the enormously positive effect that an enthusiastic and well-trained clinician can offer and the range of problems they deal with. I am working with family and clinician with a Down’s Syndrome ‘middle-schooler’ to assist her in achieving her potential, which is considerable. It has given me great satisfaction to witness the progress that she has made and continues to create and play a part in her development. I currently work as a researcher in the Developmental Psycholinguistics Lab with XXXX in XXXX, Kansas. I have sought exposure to a research environment to undertake a Ph.D. research project in the future. This experience has been of great value in understanding research techniques and the qualities required of a successful researcher, which I am determined to develop. In addition to my bachelor's degree program, I shall shortly enroll in a course entitled ‘Introduction to Audiological Assessment and Rehabilitation’ to enhance the relevant skills and knowledge I am acquiring. I am also fluent in American Sign Language, having completed three semesters of study. I also have a basic understanding of French, which I intend to enhance when other commitments permit. Dedicated clinicians must have outside interests and recreations to ensure a balanced and rounded personality. In addition to swimming and reading, I love physically demanding activities such as canoeing, rafting, zip lining, skydiving, and parasailing. I am also reasonably well-traveled due to my membership in ‘People to People, an organization whose mission is to further international understanding and friendship through educational, cultural, and humanitarian activities involving the exchange of ideas and experiences directly among people of different countries and diverse cultures. I also undertake a significant amount of voluntary and charity-raising activities through my membership in various organizations, including ‘Family Promise,’ ‘Big Brothers, Big Sisters, ‘Global Partners,’ and ‘The Lawrence Humane Society.’ I have studied, worked, and socialized with people from many social and cultural backgrounds and positively enjoy doing so. To summarize, I am confident that I have the academic potential, essential experience, knowledge and background, personal attributes, and, most of all, a genuine passion for this area of study and work to enable me to 'add value' to the program if selected, and to make a significant and positive difference to the lives of my future clients. A medical doctor from Nigeria, I immigrated to America in June of 2014. I hope to earn the Master of Public Health Degree at XXXX University with a focus on global environmental sustainability and health, to maximize my fullest potential contributing to curbing health disasters in my land of origin, especially those associated with environmental degradation. As a result of a corrupt, inefficient, and insufficiently regulated oil industry we have more than our share of challenges in Nigeria. I see your program at Johns Hopkins as representing the cutting edge in global environmental sustainability and public health – precisely the areas where I want to focus my efforts as a graduate student here in America. I appreciate the singularity and scope of your program, including in-depth discussions of climate change, energy and land use, food production and consumption and occupational hazards. Since my arrival in America a little over two years ago, I have worked as a caregiver for elderly people, the disabled, and the mentally challenged. I have enjoyed these last two years adjusting to American culture and building a new life for myself in the USA. Now, it is time for me to put my medical training to good use, however, and I very much hope to do so as a graduate student of global sustainable public health at XXXX. I grew up in small town in Nigeria with many if not most public health problems endemic, ranging from infectious diseases to substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, overcrowding, pollution, malnutrition, child labor, etc. This background left me with unanswered questions in my heart even before I went to medical school where I attended as many lectures in public health as were available and found few answers to my burning questions. Thus, I have a lifelong passion for and commitment to community service beginning while still in medical school, serving as a volunteer with the National Youth Service Corps. My duties included outreach to marginalized communities, school health screenings, helping with environmental sanitation projects and educating the public about the effects of climatic change and human contributions, medical outreach including basic medical treatments of the underserved, orphans and abandoned children, the homeless, and the very old. While I had dreamed of becoming a medical doctor since childhood, I dated my inspiration for a career in public health from the time that I completed my community health posting during my medical training in a village called Anagbete, in Edo State. I faced the real life and death issues of this community head on, and it opened my eyes to the vast need for medical professionals trained not just in medicine but also public health. During and after my medical training in Nigeria, I had the profound privilege of studying under and working alongside Prof. Mrs. Obehi Okojie, a leader in public health in Nigeria; she was also my undergraduate project supervisor. As a public health professional with a professional degree from the finest of MPH Programs at Johns Hopkins, I will realize my dream of being able to devote my life to the study of climate change, energy use, land use and food production, coupled to the promotion of wellness and disease prevention. I look forward to extensive participation in educational awareness building programs concerning lifestyle behaviors, leading by example. and serving as a role model for others to follow in Nigeria. I see myself serving in the future as a public health director for an organization devoted to fostering environmental sustainability and protecting endangered human populations. I chose XXXX because I firmly believe that anything that is worth doing is worth giving one’s all to. I want to be the best, with the finest education possible. I keenly look forward to learning from the champions of public health at XXXX and especially taking advantage of the opportunity to participate in a community practicum. I am most excited about the many challenges that lie ahead and the way that XXXX has the right kind of interdisciplinary focus to help me to learn think as creatively as possible about every professional challenge that I shall face up to in the future, in Nigeria as well as here in America. Thank you for considering my application to XXXX. MPH Global Health Personal Purpose

Probably the strongest aspect of my application to your competitive MPH Program at XXXX University is my proven track record of support for some of the most vulnerable members of our society. I have spent countless hours as a volunteer with NYC Hope doing homeless outreach as well as XXXX where I work in the food pantry and mailroom. These folks have become an especially important part of my community and my identity. I also volunteer at NYC XXXX, mostly visiting nursing homes and helping recent immigrants to learn English. Finally, I help high school students fill out applications to and serve as Chaperon on trips to visit colleges. I have two current professional positions; at one, SCO Family Services, I visit youth in foster care and assess their need for assistance; in the other, I facilitate services for people living with HIV/AIDS. I hope to earn the master's degree in public health from XXXX University because I see your program as the ultimate springboard upon which to launch my career as a public health professional, dedicated to improving access to and the quality of health care for special populations that face special challenges or tend to fall through the cracks in the system. I believe that everyone, including youth in foster care and everyone who is afflicted with the scourge of cancer deserve our support and access to a high quality of health care. I believe that improving access to and the quality of health care that we provide as a community requires a holistic approach or way of thinking. I am looking forward to working in a professional environment that will allow me to continue to grow and exercise my creativity so as to have a positive impact on health care policy and practice in my community. I am especially looking forward to studying the way in which public health problems tend to be rooted in the experiences of early childhood. Thus, I want to focus on the ways that public health initiatives for children can be improved through a better understanding of family and social conditions. During my four years in college, I became a caregiver for both my mother and my aunt who were diagnosed with terminal cancer. I threw myself into the study of the battle against cancer and care for the victims. As part of this process, I quickly began to realize that many Americans simply suffer from a lack of health care resources because they are poor, and my resentment at this injustice began to grow. I grew enormously personally and professionally because of the double tragedy that I faced during those years that should have been the most carefree and enjoyable of my life. I made the most of it by devoting myself to my studies and spending as much time as possible caring for my mother and my aunt while I still had them with me. Thank you for considering my application.
