For the last 9 years I have been working with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in support of refugee services and peacekeeping missions in my native Africa. I have distinguished myself in this capacity by my advanced training and experience in gender sensitivity and respect for the rights of women – something sorely lacking in Africa, particularly in conflict situations. The allocation of UN funds to a variety of projects is therefore safeguarded, making sure that the funds arrive at their designated destination in the service of asylum seekers, refugees, and at-risk migrants, addressing their basic needs and human rights issues in a fair, equitable, and timely manner. My commitment to public services started when I was sixteen, when I became a member of the Leo Club in my home country of Guinea, West Africa. At the age of nineteen, when I went to Montreal, Canada to pursue my undergraduate studies, I joined the Lions Club “Montreal au Service de l’Enfance” as one of the founding members with a group of friends who were also students at the University of Montreal, McGill University, and the University of Quebec. I very much appreciate the comprehensive character of being a social worker, especially being an advocate for the client and helping them to navigate their way successfully through the system, making the most of those resources that are available for support. I also appreciate how social workers are a part of professional teams of healthcare professionals, providing all manner of treatment regimens, from one-on-one care to family and group counseling. I love how the work is extremely varied, ranging from healthcare advocacy and referrals to client education} As with any work that involves working with the public, the social worker must be highly culturally competent, being able to reach out to and communicate effectively with people of varying backgrounds, cultures, and creeds. Cultural competency needs to be heartfelt, though, as much a part of the social worker as compassion, something that cannot be taught in the lecture hall. Moreover, at-risk populations encompass people of all socioeconomic statuses as well as cultural differences, thus, the social worker must be in tune with the unique needs of the poor, the sick and the needy, coupled with a desire to help all, and at all costs. For the future, I anticipate inspiring others to become more engaged in their lives, motivate them, and teach them that even though life’s path is inherently riddled with pitfalls, there is always the ability to begin anew. More specifically, post-graduation, I envision working within Hospice, and upon building my exposure, serving as a lead caregiver, and hosting grief support groups. Moreover, I am aiming to use my work experience as a foundation from which to assist in gerontology research. Having spent close to three years as a home health aide, I was fortunate to have had contact with patients of all ages, but primarily the elderly. The diversity of clientele has helped build my own cultural competency, as my patients represented many ethnicities, levels of society and socioeconomic status. Furthermore, I helped patients with all manner of conditions and ailments, cancer, AIDS, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s to name but a few. I took from this time in my professional career a sense of deep and profound privilege to be with a patient in their most vulnerable stages of life. I will never forget one of my patients, a 60-year-old man, dying of brain cancer, a man and family I served for but eight short hours. Upon arriving at the gentleman’s home, I found him, and his wife, but their three sons were all living out of state. In minutes, I assessed that the man had less than 24 hours to live. Taking the man’s wife to one side, I explained that she needed to inform her sons right away, and events unfolded around me: the sons booking their flights while the woman shared beautiful memories of her time with her husband. As time went on, she became more frantic, asking, “What should I do?” Having worked alongside hospice nurses, I knew this moment would come, the most painful of questions we ever face. I explained that while her husband was in a transitional period, he could still hear her, that he needed to hear that she and the boys would be fine, that they were on their way, and that they all loved him very much. Knowing that people sometimes hang onto life out of worry, I explained that her assurances would let her husband pass in peace. Her relief was apparent, and her involvement in the process was, she felt, the least she could do. That brief amount of time has stayed with me ever since, marking the most gratifying experience of my life. I had empowered someone to assist in their loved one’s last moments. What greater display of our humanity could I offer for her or for any person I help through my future work? While home healthcare work became too physically taxing for me, I never lost my desire to help others and their families in their times of need. Indeed, while my time as a home healthcare worker “ended”, I have continued working for various behavioral health agencies as an administrative assistant. To my mind, though, my work to date has not been as personally or professionally satisfying as it could, going only slightly beyond a means to an end. While I have steadily progressed into more senior positions, increasing my responsibilities and the numbers of people I supervise, I know I can contribute so much more to society, and I will be able to do that with an MSW. In preparation and anticipation of my MSW program, I have taken part in seminars and in-services normally reserved for social workers, even though I earn no continuing education units through these efforts. My introduction to social work was one of a deeply personal nature. When my first long-term relationship ended in suicide, I received counseling from a social worker. It was not this trial that I fully appreciated how much I longed to work in a capacity where I touched people’s lives, making a positive, sustainable impact. Now I have the chance to turn my negative experiences into positive energy, as a force for growth in the community, bringing hope to those going through similar challenges, never allowing my nightmare to have been in vain. My social worker offered me great insights into what I was going through, carefully examining the steps, the stresses, both inside my mind and heart, and those in my life. I was impressed with many things about my social worker, how the conversation was not just about my mind or my family, but how things were going to be financially, how I would feel when I returned home, and how I would handle my future. After my ordeal, I heard a quotation by Deepak Chopra that succinctly describes the compassion I was shown: “In the giving of oneself there is a direct experience of pain, yet in the giving there is love. Thus, compassion has the power to dissolve pain by not avoiding it.” Having been there before, and equipping myself with an MSW, I would be the ideal sounding board, a soft place to fall, for the people I counsel. When I see a client in a hole they cannot get out of, I will get in the hole with them. I will be able to tell them not to worry, I have been here before, and I know the way out. More specifically, I have taken from my own experiences and self-guided further education the stages of grief, the need to impress upon the survivors that the situation is not their fault, and to not “catastrophize”. Indeed, seeking out further guidance, I learned to cope with my feelings and apply what I had learned to other relationships in my life, but more importantly, learned living skills to take care of myself. As a professional social worker, I need to learn to share only what is necessary to help others, to develop different approaches to therapy and how to balance listening, guidance, disclosure. While I am a truly empathetic individual, I need to train myself to release my clients’ problems when I complete my daily work routine, to not “bring their problems home with me”. My talents are still raw, and I need training to make the most of my ardent desire to equip people with basic coping skills and increase self-efficacy and esteem, natural ability is not enough. Knowing that people need to understand that blame and guilt are useless self-destructive cycles, how to impress upon them self-acceptance and respect of their limitations is only half the battle; fostering a sense of inner peace is key. While preparing and working through my seminar paper this past spring, I discovered that I had a passionate commitment to the research I was conducting concerning barriers to post-secondary education. I thrive investigating patterns of segregation in housing and employment. I felt a responsibility, an obligation to the people I was writing about. The patterns were clear, their distress was evident, and it was up to me to bring this to light. I come from a depressed inner-city area, my church, where I am on the board of directors, is in this area, and I see the issues daily. Now 29 years old, I was born in Korea and came to America to build a new life with my family at the age of thirteen. I am writing in support of my application to your distinguished MPA Program at XXXX University because I hope very much to excel for the balance of my professional lifetime as an administrator. Since I already have two master's degrees – MSW and MS Gerontology to complement my BA in Psychology, all from the University of Southern California – I fear that you may suspect me of wanting to simply collect master's degrees by earning my third. I am sensitive to the all-too-true stereotype of Korean people, that they tend to take their emphasis on the importance of education to the extreme. I need the MPA Degree to compliment what I have done so far and to realize my long-term aspirations in Social Work/Health Care Administration, to make my maximum contribution to the care of our elderly residents. I love the diversity of America and I seek to cultivate a special interest in the less privileged and underserved members of our community. For this reason, while I cannot say that I am yet fluent in Spanish, I have worked very hard to get my ability in this language up to an intermediate level – and continue to do improve daily - because of the fact that Spanish is the first and often the only language of so many needy members of our community here in California. I also feel strongly that understanding the needs of and providing care for patients in their first, often only, language is especially important for our older residents, many of whom have extremely limited English ability. I feel honored to share in our response to the fact that our population is aging in America, with our senior citizens comprising a greater percentage of our population each day. As a Public Administration professional with expertise in the non-profit sector, I look forward to developing programs that provide social services that are both efficient and cost effective for clients, employees, and funding sources. I now have experience with two non-profit organizations: Special Service for Groups in Los Angeles and SCAN Health Plan, Independence at Home in Long Beach, CA. The target population of both organizations is people over sixty-five. I particularly look forward to developing special expertise in marketing and communications strategies for new health care initiatives geared for new generations of senior citizens. Since 2013, I have also been volunteering at Volunteer Action in Aging where I help to organize and assist at events for residents of senior housing. I am writing in support of my application to your Global HIV Surveillance Fellowship Program.  In addition to the fact that I am a nursing professional and I am now in my last semester of an MPH Program, the principal strength of my application is the fact that I came to America as a refugee from Africa;  and I have lost several family members to HIV/AIDS, including three uncles and my grandmother. Thus, I am familiar with many of the central challenges involved in HIV/AIDS surveillance and I am highly motivated, on personal as well as professional levels. America offered me a wealth of opportunities to improve myself in many ways. Most importantly I became a registered nurse, which has given me a profound sense of pride and achievement. My nursing career has fulfilled until now and brought me boundless joy.  As I have become increasingly Americanized and professionally successful, I have begun to think more and more about infectious diseases in the world and the people who suffer from them, the causes and consequences of illness and disease, constantly reflecting on the types of prevention methods and disease management strategies that work best in  particular areas of the world—especially the Developing World, replete with all of the special public health challenges that generally accompany poverty. And it is the hope, the vision of making significant contributions to the battle against contagious disease that inspired me to earn the MPH Degree. I ask for acceptance to your competitive program because of my extremely elevated level of motivation to join that elite group of scientists and health care pioneers on the forefront of our global response to HIV/AIS. I had the opportunity to visit my birthplace in Africa after so many years, just lucky enough to see the home I grew up in and spend time with the family members that I have left. I sorely missed several close friends that I grew up with, my three uncles, and my grandma. It was this first and only trip back to Africa that set me on a direct course to full immersion in public health and the fight against HIV/AIDS worldwide, and in sub-Saharan Africa in particular. I am currently working as a registered nurse and completing my last semester to earn my MPH. My education and   eight years of nursing experience have provided me with a vivid understanding of health problems and bolstered my passion for public health and epidemiology. Increasingly, I have been able to see a fuller picture with respect to health care challenges, and to think in long term sustainable ways about how to best provide health services. Public health presents us with enormous challenges indeed in sub-Saharan Africa, especially when many issues are so multifaceted and tangled with much larger social and cultural problems.   It is for this reason that I hope to participate in your fellowship program because I see a strong surveillance program to be the principal foundation for any chance at even containing much less eradicating the disease for the long term. By being given the honor of participating in your global surveillance fellowship program, I hope to gain a comprehensive understanding of how to best establish and operate HIV surveillance systems as the central aspect of my own public health research and practice.   I am especially drawn to the program because of its strong emphasis on the ‘global’ aspect of our battle. I see your program as the optimal springboard upon which to make progress in my long-term goals, developing the critical partnerships along the way that I will need to become as successful as possible at saving the lives of future generations of poor and disadvantaged people, the most vulnerable among us. When we speak of the Healthcare System in The United States it is often with a sense of resignation or futility. It is obvious to most of us that reform is urgently needed but that lasting solutions are complex and difficult to come by. Those of us who work in healthcare management are extremely aware of the need for change and I am convinced that we can make huge improvements from within, which is why I have dedicated myself to this career. I believe that professional management systems can play an increasingly crucial role in healthcare administration and that by actively seeking to improve the operational abilities of our hospitals then we will also begin to see a marked improvement in the quality of the healthcare which we provide. The goal of everyone involved is to provide the best possible care for our patients. I have experience at empowerment since I helped to implement and operate a micro-lending program and I am also experienced and confident in the areas of international trade, product development, and marketing I did field work as a graduate student in the Philippines working with two non-government agencies, one in public health and the other economic development. I traveled throughout some of the most remote regions with the economic development NGO and witnessed the drive and enthusiasm of the poorest to improve their lives. I have served the community as a Public Health Investigator for the past ten years, the last five years as a supervisor. I often work with those who are homeless, addicted, and psychologically disturbed, and this has given me insight into the many ways that well-intended policies have been implemented that have not yielded the desired results. Thus, I now seek to equip myself with the knowledge and skills to enable me to shape effective policies that serve to improve the lives of those who live in unhealthy surroundings or circumstances, as my focus is to earn the PHD Degree in Public Health. I hope to someday to hold a senior post in local government, helping to formulate policies, measuring their effectiveness, and making any necessary adjustments. I look forward to participating with peers in networks concerned with best practices in certain geographical regions, sharing information and expertise. I was raised by parents who insisted on impeccable honesty, hard work, and the importance of ‘making a difference' rather than merely ‘making a living.’ I was born in Iran and raised there until 14, when my family moved to Germany. From age 15, I volunteered in various refugee camps as a translator and assisted inmates in making applications to stay. After arriving In the US in 1994, I worked for two years as a volunteer at XXXX’s hospital, providing support to the often-distressed relatives of sick children in the Burns Unit or Oncology Department. My first paid position as a PHI was with the Public Health Department’s STD program. I was sufficiently effective in that role to be promoted to supervising PHI with the Tuberculosis Control Program and have served in this role for the last 5 years, earning my bachelor's degree in Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology. I have always striven to make improvements in procedures and policy implementation where I have been able to do so. For example, to keep LA residents safe, it is sometimes necessary to incarcerate non-compliant and highly infectious TB patients who may also have psychological issues and a tendency to violence. Initially, the Sheriffs would sometimes turn our patients away due to facility overcrowding, and there was no alternative way of keeping the patient and society safe. It took a year to engage the right parties at the Sheriff’s Department and the Supervisor’s office. So far, I have helped to implement two policy changes that have made a substantial difference. Now the clients are housed as patient-inmates until the completion of therapy. We also now have the support of Sheriff’s deputies assigned to county hospitals where necessary. I liaised with the sergeant responsible, and we agreed on a directive adopted throughout the County under which we support relocating or re-detaining patients who seek to leave the hospital at an early stage of treatment. I am very aware that technical knowledge is not in itself sufficient to change policies and attitudes. Specific characteristics are vital in those seeking to make fundamental, lasting, and positive differences in any field but especially in areas where budgets are constantly under pressure, and the welfare of individuals is at stake. I realize that creativity, an analytical mind, determination, and the ability to engage exceptionally well with others are essential in making the difference I seek to create. I am convinced that I possess these vital characteristics and the necessary proven academic success and potential to excel within the program and in my career beyond it.
