- PHD Public Health Nutrition Personal Purpose, African
A young woman from Nigeria, I have been raised to think in terms of social responsibility and solidarity and to cherish the goal of helping the desperately poor people of my country and the rest of my struggling continent, Africa. I focused early on food, diet, and the importance of adequate nutrition to one’s health. Thus, I earned my BS in Food Science (2012) and my master's degree in Food and Nutritional Science (2015). My central passion and long-term goal are to do everything that I can to improve the health of the popular classes of Nigerian peoples through adequate nutrition and public health education about nutrition. For this reason, being accepted to study towards the PHD in Public Health with a focus on Nutrition at XXXX University would be the crowning honor of my life so far and prepare me for making my maximum contribution to my society. XXXX University is my first choice for graduate study in Public Health and Human Nutrition because of your emphasis on thinking and acting globally and the interest in and solidarity shown with Africa by the University of XXXX. Earning the PHD at a world renowned Public Health program like yours at XXXX University will prepare me for a lifetime of struggle in Nigeria and perhaps elsewhere in Africa as well, designing and implementing food safety and distribution programs that will enable us, within time, to win the battle against hunger that will go a long way towards curing and especially preventing disease. I look forward to learning everything that I can about sanitation as well as nutrition at XXXX University to help us to be better able to prevent and control disease, especially by combating malnutrition in children and the elderly. These two groups are particularly vulnerable with respect to public health nutrition issues. I look forward to a lifetime of service to orphanages and internally displaced persons in camps like the ones that we have in the Northern part of Nigeria because of widespread violence resulting primarily from the actions of the terrorist group Boko Haram which is causing widespread devastation and suffering in Nigeria. I particularly look forward to designing and coordinating workshops for mothers in rural areas concerning how to afford nutritious food to prevent their children from being malnourished and partner with rural health centers to provided education programs focused on successful approaches to the prevention of chronic health outcomes for the elderly. I look forward to many decades to come of educating young and old alike concerning the power of nutrition to prevent chronic disease in the long term, especially cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. Doing everything that I can to promote healthy eating habits, I intend to partner with industries to facilitate and promote the production of healthier food products with macro-nutrients and vitamins. I look forward to paying special attention throughout my career to women and girls because when you empower a girl you empower a nation. I want to have a share in encouraging girls in Africa to pursue science, technology, and engineering – with respect to food production as well as a host of other areas. My long-term goal is to build my own consulting firm dedicated to the promotion of public health nutrition, working with a broad range of actors from private companies and NGOs to government agencies and international human rights organizations. My ideal job/position would be a chief executive officer of my consulting firm, and a principal officer with a non-profit international organization dedicated to the promotion of nutrition in Africa, especially Nigeria. When I was twelve, my mother started an orphanage. I grew up watching each of these kids develop in their own ways while I helped to care for them. Many had nutritional and developmental issues having lost their mothers at a very tender age. I was involved with managing and supporting the home for several years. This went a long way towards my incredibly early moral development and cultivation of my great passion for helping the undernourished, in every sense of the word since the children that came to us were undernourished emotionally and communally as well as physically. I have a solid academic foundation that will serve me well as a PHD student in Public Health and Human Nutrition at XXXX University since I engaged in a great deal of research in my studies, particularly as a master's student. During my first degree I focused on product development and exhibition sessions, my passion to fight hunger among children inspired me to develop a weaning formula for infants using peanuts, soy, and corn. The product was also further developed as a family breakfast meal. This project helped to develop my research, communication, teamwork, and time management skills since I was able to share equipment and workspace with my colleagues and discuss the project with staff and other students. As a research project for my bachelor's degree, I studied the chemical, functional and pasting properties of flours and starch from African Ron Palm shoot. For my Masters, among other projects, I learned everything that I could and wrote about Epicatechin rich chocolate and its effects on vascular function, working with the Jeremy Spencer Research Group helping me to grow enormously in my understanding of the proper way to undertake and execute scientific inquiry concerning food and nutrition. I learned about the ILAB600 Chemistry Analyzer, High Performance Liquid chromatography, Omron MX2 automatic digital upper-left arm blood pressure monitors, Centrifuge, pre-processing and storage of Urine and blood samples and technical knowledge in the use of the Brachial Analyzer and Medical Imaging Applications. During my one-year compulsory national youth service in Nigeria, I joined an HIV and Aids group and organized workshops and rallies in secondary schools. For one school, I also helped with the reconstruction of dilapidated classroom steps, drainage for access to the school, and a signpost for the incinerator as well as raising money to cover the cost of materials and repairs. This amazingly caught the attention of national radio and television stations, and I received a Letter of Recommendation from the National Youth Corps. I was a founding member of our local chapter of the Nigerian Association of Food Science and Technology students at my university. In my bid to encourage girls’ involvement in science, technology, and engineering, I worked with other pioneer executives and was the only female in the leadership. I represented my level as a senator, then became regional coordinator representing eight tertiary institutions, and finally the Vice President on a national level. I also had the privilege of organizing speakers and students for the food and nutritional science department annual conference and acted in the capacity of a student ambassador for the school on open days. Since my graduation, I have been an active member of the National Institute of Food Science Technology. Thank you for considering my application to XXXX University. - MPH Personal Purpose Statement Example, Neuroscience, Women’s Studies, Latina
Throughout my life I have been recognized many times for having a calming presence. I didn’t realize how much of a positive trait that was until I started and ran my own community service organization in high school. It wasn’t easy, especially for a shy teenager, but I was passionate about helping others. I managed dozens of events, we raised $3000 for World Vision, and the club ended up contributing thousands of hours of community service. I learned a lot about responsibility, leadership, accountability, and organization. What made it especially fulfilling was how much it forced me out of my comfort zone. It also taught me that one must go into public service with the right mindset. Not everyone wants help or will be grateful. Big dreams take a lot of work, patience, and calm. The work itself must be fulfilling because the ideal results don’t always happen. Now that I know I won’t crumble under pressure, I want to pursue a career that allows me to keep striving to help others no matter what. I want to work in Public Health because it incorporates my strengths, interests, and career goals. The master's degree program in Public Health at the University of ____ is my first choice for graduate school primarily because it will equip me with the tools to maximize my contribution to society. During my senior year of college, while working as a research assistant in neuroscience, I became fully convinced that Public Health would be my calling. I am proud of the fact that I was able to graduate with a 3.9 GPA in my major, despite working all the way through school 20-30 hours a week. Since finishing my undergraduate studies in Psychology with minors in Neuroscience and Women’s Studies at ____ University six years ago, I have grown and matured enormously both personally and professionally. Now, at 28, I have the wisdom and experience to excel in your MPH Program at ____. The progress that I have made over this period is reflected in my GRE scores. On my first attempt in my senior year of college, I scored only a 48 and 53 percentile ranking on the quantitative and verbal sections. Recently, however, I retook the GRE and scored in the 79 and 94 percentiles, respectively. Following graduation, I have continued to take classes, approximately 40 hours of additional courses including Statistics, Biochemistry, Computer Programming, and others to ensure adequate preparation for your program. My intense enthusiasm for Public Health and closely related areas is reflected by the fact that my professor for my Introduction to Social Work course, Professor ____ took the time to recommend me to your program. While taking her class, I volunteered to aid with two different Public Health projects. First, I volunteered at a WIC clinic in Baytown, Texas. Though I mostly helped with clerical work, I was also able to follow and observe meetings with clients. I also volunteered with the Harris Country Mobile Health Unit administering flu shots. I helped people fill out the forms, provided them with additional resources after their inoculations, and in what I found to be most rewarding, I assured them that they were safe and secure in our care. I was really inspired by this work, and especially by the caring and patient people who do it. There was nothing glamourous about it, and it was a lot of challenging work, but I felt proud to be involved. Many of my undergraduate courses were closely related to public health. Scientific and Technical Writing taught me how to write objectively and put together scientific papers correctly. In my senior Biology Regulatory and Behavioral Neuroscience lab I conducted my own experiment, resulting in a full scientific paper on conditioning and perceived pain response in crawfish. While it was not published, I have included it as a writing sample to show my understanding of the scientific experimentation process. In addition, my Statistics for Psychology course taught me how to conduct scientific studies before analyzing and reporting results using statistics. In addition, I took a Human Nutrition science class which helped me to understand the relationship more fully between nutrition and health. Finally, my Psychology of Women class shaped my worldview and spurred my interest in community health and social causes, as well as the complex ways in which gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic location can influence health care, especially mental health care. At XXXXI also had the opportunity to work alongside Dr. ____ who has also been so good as to provide me with a reference. While working as his research assistant, I learned a great deal about how to develop experiments and implement analytical processes. I oversaw arranging appointments, running the daily experiments, and transcribing and processing data using SRSS software for statistical analysis. I also ran interview-style tests on older adults in a study of age and memory in addition to utilizing a confocal microscope to analyze lesions in rat brain slides as part of our study of age-related cognitive decline. After one test, one of the subjects even told me that although she was initially nervous about taking part in the study, she felt better thanks to my calming presence. While at first, I also strongly considered community health, I have decided that epidemiology is the track that I wish to pursue as a graduate student in Public Health due to my passion for studying chronic health issues. My father has had diabetes for the last half of his life; my sister has a chronic thyroid condition, and I was diagnosed with severe rheumatoid arthritis at the age of twenty. Fortunately, my condition is now in medically induced remission, but it will be with me for the rest of my life. The area that interests me the most is Type II diabetes, not only because of my father’s condition but also the fact that this is a public health crisis that is expected to worsen in coming decades. Given my interest in epidemiology, it would be a special honor to study under Drs. ____ and ____ since both are highly distinguished in the genetic epidemiology of chronic illnesses, especially Type II diabetes, the area of my own greatest special interest and experience. ____ will provide me with the most comprehensive and thorough public health education possible for me to attain at a world-renowned program. Public Health in Texas is bilingual and for this reason I have worked extremely hard for several years now on my Spanish and I continue to make progress. While I cannot yet claim to be fluent, I invest a lot of time in my second language and am confident that I will achieve fluency by the time I complete your program. While waiting to begin at ____, I will be improving my Spanish and continuing to volunteer with ____ County Public Health, gaining additional hands-on experience related to epidemiology. While my central goal is to work in the public sector with an organization like the CDC, National Institute of Health, or a local public health department, the most important goal is to make sure all people, regardless of language, will see me as a calming presence. Thank you for considering my application to the MPH Program at ____. MPH Personal Purpose Statement Example #mph #personalstatement #editingservice #statementofpurpose #publichealth

I fell in love with Psychiatry as my medical specialty of lifelong learning and research during my rotation in this area while a student in medical school. At that time, an 11-year-old boy and his parents had been in a terrible accident with all three of them severely injured. The car accident left his body a shattered quadriplegic with cerebral palsy due to an anoxic brain injury. While the physical injuries of both his parents were less severe, the mental and emotional scars left by the accident were profound, especially for the mother. Having survived the accident and making progress at her physical healing, the mother nonetheless descended into a downward spiral of alcohol abuse that ended in suicide. That suicide stayed with me, I felt so sorry for the little boy, losing his mother on top of living with a permanently incapacitated body. With this family, I came to realize that illness of the mind can be even more deadly than physical disease or bodily trauma. I became fascinated with the challenge and decided to take it up. Since then, I have done all that I can to fully prepare for the opportunity and challenge of a demanding residency position in Psychiatry. For years I have been fascinated by the unique challenges presented by Psychiatry, how most of the anomalies in Psychiatric patients entail feelings and behaviors that cannot be measured, as the tangible is always of secondary importance to what can only be sensed. Arriving at a correct diagnosis depends upon the ability of the psychiatrist to decode the patient's feedback. From all that I have seen and come to understand as a psychiatrist, understanding the full gambit of patient circumstances and context requires that one pays as much attention to the patient's family and caregivers as the patient themselves. I see family members and especially caregivers as allies, and often as keys to helping the patient to heal and for the family to fully support the patient in that recovery. I have been inspired by several of my colleagues that have had the pleasure of going to Haiti on medical missions with teams of medical students to provide free Diabetes, hypertension, and other preventative health screenings as well as basic primary care camps for locals living in remote, poverty-stricken areas. On a local level in Canada, I want to use my position in the community to make sustainable contributions to programs that provide education and shelter for homeless children, as well as free medical care. But I hope to complement these local efforts with at least one annual mission to the Global South alongside coworkers. I have a solid academic foundation in Medicine and Psychiatry as well as extensive volunteer experience in Canada and the US. My core rotation in Psychiatry impressed upon me the profound and positive impact of the direct patient-physician relationship, even in patients with severely debilitating disorders. In my homeland of India, for example, people tend to realize the need for medicine and medical intervention only when they are physically ill. Yet, guilt, remorse, depression, and stress are accompanied by physical symptoms and conditions that can spark or contribute to a premature death. The power to improve the quality of life of a patient is what I admire most in Psychiatry. I look forward to my Psychiatry residency assignment with great eagerness and zeal, most keen to show compassion, empathy, and give my all to the mental health and wellbeing of my neighbors in the community that becomes my own. Thank you for your time and consideration. Psychiatry Residency Personal Statement Editing #editingservice #psychiatry #residency #personalstatement #examples
- Residency Diagnostic Radiology Personal Statement
I am a Saudi woman born in Canada, raised, and trained in Saudi Arabia and now residing in Chicago. I hold a first class MBBS degree awarded by the King Abdul-Aziz University, Jeddah. My goal is to undertake a residency in Diagnostic Radiology, sub-specializing in Interventional Radiology, in Canada and later to pursue a fellowship in Interventional Radiology. I hope to eventually serve as a head of a Radiology Department in a prestigious hospital in Saudi Arabia and to teach this specialty. I was raised in a very demanding home environment in which I was expected to give 100% effort to everything that I undertook and to be diligent, independent, reliable, and honest. I thrived in this demanding environment which provided me with very wide choices in terms of career as it provided me with the tools to excel in all subjects. I chose to pursue medicine because I wanted to ‘make a difference’ rather than just ‘make a living’. I have never regretted this choice which I consider a vocation rather than a mere career choice. My experience of Medical School was thoroughly positive, and I was enthralled with what I learned of the wonder that the human body is. I also came to see how the knowledge I was acquiring related to clinical practice and that patients are not merely bundles of symptoms but individuals with unique needs and personalities. I learned that not everything a good physician needs to know can be easily taught, such as the importance of recognizing and interpreting non-verbal communication provided by patients. The challenging experiences provided during my Medical School years also left positive marks on my personality and helped me to mature as a person. I learned how to be an effective team member and how to organize, lead and inspire a team by being my group leader for years 4 to 6. I formed solid friendships during these happy years that I know will endure. When I graduated, it was not only with the highest mark for my final year but with the highest mark in each of the six years of my course. This success is less a measure of my intelligence than of my passion for medicine. I undertook various voluntary assignments at Medical School that it may be relevant to mention. I was involved in the WHO ‘Stop Tuberculosis’ campaign in Saudi Arabia in 2010 and the ‘Breast Cancer Awareness’ campaign in 2008. Breast cancer presents great problems in Saudi Arabia because of, often, late diagnosis and I felt privileged in being part of the on-going efforts to extend symptom awareness and for the need for prompt treatment for my compatriots. I was also one of the organizers of a ‘Diabetes Mellitus Health Field Survey’ in my fourth year. During my rotations, I became particularly drawn to Radiology, my interest being initially fired by an expert in this field whose skills, in drawing all the ‘pieces of the puzzle’ together and identifying the patient’s problem, were astonishing. This relationship resulted in my choosing Radiology as an elective and then as my future career. I considered this choice carefully and I possess the exceptional observational and analytical skills required for this fascinating and vital area of work. I am a ‘visual person’, a photographer also interested in handcrafts and painting, and I believe that my artist’s ‘eye for detail’ and sensibilities will enable me to excel in this field. My decision led to my successful application for a Demonstrator (Residency) position in Interventional Radiology at King Abdul-Aziz University. This appointment provided an opportunity to teach, and I have developed a love of passing on my skills and knowledge that I hope to develop and apply throughout my career. I am deeply interested in the advancement of non-invasive procedures in interventional radiology. It is my aim to be able to offer further non-surgical, less invasive options to patients and to advance the knowledge of this specialty, especially in my home country. I am now seeking to join a residency program that will enable me to learn the most modern techniques from leading experts in the field. I also seek to pursue research and to hone my teaching skills. It is my hope that I will be enabled, through participation in the program, to assist in the general advancement of healthcare in Saudi Arabia. I have happily studied, worked, and socialized with people from many cultural and social backgrounds and look forward to extending such experiences during the residency, if selected. I consider myself to be culturally sensitive and have an awareness of the special importance of cultural and social awareness in a medical environment. I am aware that there will be many professionally qualified applicants for the residency program but genuinely believe that I am an exceptional candidate. My academic results will provide reassurance that I possess a highly developed work ethic and I offer a promise of diligent participation in the residency program. The activities and leadership roles that I have undertaken will, I hope, provide evidence that I am a person who can always be relied upon to involve herself enthusiastically in her academic and working environment. My experience in this specialty may also be difficult to match by most other applicants and will enable me to ‘add value’ by bringing and sharing some relevant knowledge and skills to the residency program. When people ask me, "Why are you going into psychiatry?", I have a simple response. Because it's what I love to do, it has always seemed to be what comes most naturally. Combining my medical school education, clinical rotations, and work experiences with my profound love of life provides me with a solid foundation as a psychiatrist. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to combine my spiritual passion for holistic mental health with that of a professional scientist working on behalf of the public interest by caring for patients' biological, psychological, and social wellbeing. Most intrigued with the profound challenges confronting America in terms of public health, I minored in college in Health Education and Promotion. My career goals include being a part of a residency program that will develop my clinical and technical skills, promote patient education, and encourage participation in community service. My ideal residency program would be characterized by a good balance of pharmacotherapy with psychotherapy, working with children and adolescents, and the possibility of cross-cultural opportunities. I would strive to break down barriers toward psychiatric care, including overcoming negative stereotypes and stigmas. My greatest joy would be to successfully promote healthy changes in people's lives that help to empower them to achieve their lifelong dreams. As a volunteer student counselor during my university years, speaking to students individually and in groups about drug prevention, sexual health awareness, and physical and emotional abuse, I found my stride in what I do best and the area in which I can make my most significant contribution to society. I am distinguished by my enthusiasm and zeal to help others, educate them, guiding them with empathy and compassion. The most defining encounter for my professional development has been my work experience over the past year at The XXXX Center. In this drug rehabilitation center, I have developed a comprehensive focus on the complex interplay between physical and mental health, especially the painful process of detoxification from drugs. Along with the attending physician, I have overseen the chemically dependent patient's detoxification from alcohol and other drugs combined with their ongoing medical stabilization: from the initial detoxification period throughout their 28-day program. After their initial stabilization, I continue with their care particularly mindful of and sensitive to the complexity involved with the dual diagnosis patient. Patient education in group counseling and private sessions are also my responsibility. I develop comprehensive treatment plans highly specific to the needs and exceptional circumstances of each patient. I am also the director of our smoking cessation program, using the model of alcoholics anonymous and the 12-step program of recovery. My professional experiences as both a medical doctor and a counselor have provided me with great insight and empathy, precisely developing those skills that are so indispensable to any psychiatrist. My own personal life experiences with loved ones, one with Alzheimer's disease and another struggling daily to live with immune-compromised health issues, have also taught me invaluable lessons. I have learned that life is indeed short and that it is imperative that we live out our dreams and push through our fear--together. I offer to your program my rich enthusiasm, strong work ethic, and ability to work well as a team player, someone who is totally committed, eager, and professionally qualified to join your team. - Residency Urology Personal Statement Examples, Edit
Urology is a field where surgical competence, compassion, and sensitivity is paramount to patient care. I believe my personal strengths and experiences will allow me to succeed in this area of medicine. My interest in urology began in college when I lived in a fraternity and served as a Peer Health Counselor while attending UCLA. This meant conducting student seminars discussing topics ranging from dysuria to sexually transmitted diseases. I felt privileged to be confided in by so many people about their intimate personal problems. As a result of this experience, I authored a paper exploring the psychogenic versus the organic causes of impotence among the elderly as a class project during my senior year. After college, my road to becoming a physician took a detour. I worked for a business management company for the music entertainment industry and then started and operated a computer consulting company. These experiences taught me important organizational skills, self-discipline, and knowledge in the inner workings of computer hardware and software. My vision to pursue urology came into sharp focus in medical school. After my first exposure to the operating room, I realized the structure, teamwork, and the challenge of various surgeries had sparked a keen interest in me. I jumped at the opportunities to do everything in the operating room from starting IVs and intubating the patient to closing the wound. I enjoyed staying late at the hospital, which meant more opportunities to be involved with cases I would have otherwise missed. My interest in and love of surgery was reflected in receiving a rating of eleven out of ten from my first surgical clerkship as well as excellent comments from all my preceptors. Coincidentally, it was during my urology rotation that my father suffered urinary retention secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia. Through the rotation and my father's experience, I was able to fully appreciate the prevalence and management of prostatic diseases and other urologic abnormalities. Just when I thought the cases could not become any more interesting, I was fortunate enough to assist in a ureteral-appendiceal interposition in a trauma patient. I was fascinated. After speaking with practicing urologists both in private and academic settings, I decided that I want to combine my natural ability to discuss sensitive issues and my love for the operating room with the fascination I have dealing with urological pathologies. I have balanced my academic and clinical endeavors with an active personal life. Shortly after I immigrated to the U.S. from Taiwan at age 11, I became involved with two-way amateur radio communications. I enjoy the ability to relay messages succinctly and accurately. I have found this to be an important skill both in and out of the operating room. With English as my second language, I especially welcome the challenge of public speaking. Synthesizing my knowledge of medical education as a student and personal computers, I frequently give presentations in front of large audiences. In my spare time, I like to run, play basketball, and weightlift. Having completed a marathon and numerous 10K runs, I have the stamina to endure the rigors of a surgical subspecialty. Lastly, there is nothing more relaxing than to spend a weekend snow skiing with friends. My varied interests make deciding on my future goals in urology difficult. There are many topics in urology which intrigue me, and I am unable to decide on a specific area now. I hope to further my training in a residency program as I learn more about my options. In order to combine my desire for public speaking, love for helping others, and ability to succinctly explain complex topics, I am certain that I will be involved with teaching. I would like to continue my clinical research efforts and to eventually practice urology in an academic setting. I seek a well-balanced program which will further my intellectual and technical development through varied and numerous surgical cases along with exposure to different subspecialties within urology. Combining my personal strengths and dedication with a strong residency program, I am looking forward to incorporating compassion with results in becoming a urologist. - Urology Residency Personal Statement, Surgery
When I started medical school, I never expected to end up choosing Urology as my specialty. My medical school education was unusual in that I took a two year leave of absence to pursue research in oncology after the beginning of my third-year internal medicine clerkship. After completing my leave, I returned to medical school to complete my studies where I had left off. The intent of interposing my research into the midst of third year was to allow me to continue the remainder of my clinical training uninterrupted, specifically via participation in the care of patients with diseases relevant to those I was researching. In this way, I was able to partake in “bench-to-bedside” translational research at its best. A prototypical example of this involved a quantitative PCR test that I set up which was able to detect microscopic levels of malignant cells with great sensitivity. With this assay, we were able to discover incredibly early if our patients had relapsed and then confirm whether they were indeed responding to their experimental therapies. It was an ideal arrangement which allowed my hard work in the lab to have swift payoffs for my patients. After enjoying two years working alongside internists, I was convinced that a career in internal medicine was for me. It was not until I began my surgical clerkships that my feelings radically changed. There were many aspects of surgery which held great appeal for me. I discovered that, to an extent much greater than what I enjoyed in the lab, our hard work in surgery had immediate effects on the lives of our patients. Thus, by the end of the day I was able to begin to witness the fruits of our team’s labor: the cancer, stone, or bleed was already gone. I came to see the decisions of surgeons as something of great consequence, saving “life and limb.” Finally, I saw that the actions of surgeons are definitive in nature. Once a problem is addressed in a surgical way, it is often solved. This meant that we were able to offer our patients a definitive solution to their problem instead of simply buying them a little time. I became hooked on the allure of the rapid, permanent, and magnificent rewards of surgery. It took me a bit longer to realize that a surgeon’s mistakes could be equally rapid, permanent, and terrible. When things went badly, they went very badly. I saw that the rewards of surgery can only be realized with constant discipline and precision in both thought and action. It is a balance that I am happy to accept. I am the type of person who flourishes when challenged. Because of this, Urology holds a special appeal for me amongst the fields of surgery. The diversity within Urology seems unrivaled to me. We see both males and females, children and adults, and acute surgery intermixed with long term outpatient follow-up. The interventions range from medical management to simple outpatient procedures to marathon RPLNDs. Urology always keeps me interested. At the end of each day, I kept thinking to myself “that was so cool… I can’t wait to see more.” My pursuit of a career in urology is absolutely fitting for me. While I am reluctant to prognosticate my future within urology, I believe my predilection for diverse challenges will be satisfied. I hope that my professional future eventually includes teaching as well as research - in addition to my primary clinical responsibilities. A mentor of mine once suggested that choosing a specialty in medicine is akin to choosing a spouse. With foresight, it can at best be an educated guess: you will never know with absolute certainty whether you have chosen correctly without the benefit of many years of hindsight. He advised me to follow my gut instincts. I can safely say that my guts are screaming Urology. - Master's Degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology
I am a white American man who takes great delight in the celebration of diversity. The intersection of diversity issues and Social Psychology is the best description of the center of my personal and professional interests to date. Yet, I do not seek a professional lifetime of pure academics. My father is a Professor of Political Science at the University of XXXX. We have always been close, so I have a better-than-average understanding of what academic life entails. I do hope to teach at some point in my career, however, but I want it to be combined with industry experience. One of the reasons why the University of XXXX is my first choice for graduate school in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, for example, is that I would very much enjoy spending at least a few years working at XXXX. “Not another team-building seminar,” I thought to myself, “and on a Saturday no less.” The speaker talked exclusively about a toothpaste factory and, at first, I was thinking about the other things I would have liked to have done with my Saturday. But as he continued to speak, I increasingly felt like a fish being reeled in by forces beyond his control. He told the story of the psychology of the assembly line, what made everyone ‘tick’ the way they did in that industrial context. By the time his presentation was over, I felt like I had just run smack into my vocation—becoming an I/O Psychologist; and I could not have been happier. I am currently a lead medical assistant for a private practice, managing a team of 3 other medical assistants; I am also in charge of the laboratory. I am most pleased that I attend to many patients who are not proficient in English, enabling me to learn bits and pieces of their language to at least say "Hello, how are you feeling today." I also use my cell phone to translate for patients when they tell me what is wrong with them and convert their 'plan of care' (a summary of what they are supposed to do after the visit) into their native language so that any language barriers do not hinder them with respect to the doctors’ instructions. Going that extra mile to surmount language barriers, while it often presents a challenge, is well worth it because it facilitates the building of a rapport with the patient. I feel very privileged to be living in fascinating times for my area of chosen professional engagement since new paradigm shifts related to diversity and globalization are emerging, and there are many new, very promising avenues of inquiry. I am incredibly excited about the possibility of earning an advanced degree from UXX because of the presence in your program of Dr. XXXX since I very much admire his extensive work in intercultural awareness. I too dream of working in this area, studying how we can work with and build on our differences, and seeing them more as unique resources rather than simply a hindrance to communication. I look forward to a long lifetime of research into our understanding of how to promote multicultural appreciation in the workplace. I see no better place to begin than your distinguished I/O Psychology Program at UXX. UXX is my first choice for graduate school for a variety of factors, including what is for me the most desirable location. I see your program as an excellent platform for networking and collaborating with many NGOs in the future in the areas in which I will develop my particular focus, particularly with respect to volunteer work on behalf of the medically underserved. I find enormous satisfaction in my current work as a manager in a clinical setting, and I look forward to developing a personal and professional focus on medical issues at UXX along with my more general studies in the psychology of human organization and my professional passion for diversity issues. My colleagues at work often compliment me on my ability to always stay calm and to have a soothing effect on patients. I take pride in my compassion and will continue to work to develop it throughout my lifetime. Volunteer work has helped me to raise my civic consciousness, primarily through my church but also through my participation in animal rescues. A few years back I spent most of my summer nights at the XXXX Marine Aquarium caring for sick creatures. Thank you for considering my application.

XXXX University is my first choice for graduate study toward a Ph.D. Degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology for several reasons outlined in what follows. I think the big-city environment of Houston, complete with all the significant resources of one of America’s larger cities, is especially appropriate for studying I/O Psychology. I have nurtured a particular interest in the psychology of the workplace both as an undergraduate student in Psychology in my native New Delhi, India, and as a graduate student at the XXXX School of Professional Psychology, finishing my MA Degree this year in Industrial/Organizational Psychology with a 3.7 GPA. My GPA is a much better reflection of my capacity to excel at XXXX University than my mediocre scores on the GRE examination. I look forward to a long and productive professional life researching employee motivation, selection, job performance models, and workforce team development. I have had only limited opportunity to engage in intensive research because I chose the internship track during my master's program in Chicago. I hope to make up for this by earning my Ph.D. in a research-intensive program at XXXX. Your program at XXXX provides research opportunities in topics related to my interests and solid training for careers in both academic and applied settings. I have communicated with current students and received positive feedback about the program. It would be a great honor to study under Drs. XXXX and XXXX because they have similar research interests as my own in various areas related to the psychology of the workplace. I also appreciate how your I/O Program at XXXX promotes a collegial working style and how students receive the close support of their advisor for doctoral research. I especially hope that Dr. XXXX finds time to serve as my advisor. Your I/O Psychology program is ideal since I enjoy learning in a large metropolitan area and a collaborative, positive environment. I hope to be selected for your competitive program based on my leadership experience since I was the Founder/President of the International Student Association at The XXXX School of Professional Psychology. This experience helped me grow not only professionally but also personally. I learned to view things from different perspectives, more fully embracing and celebrating multiculturalism in increasingly creative ways. I created this student body to help international students voice their opinions, which was an enormous success. I also served as a mentor to a first-year student in my second year of graduate school. Our I/O psychology department had a peer mentor program where every newly admitted student was assigned a mentor to provide support, feedback, and friendship and set a professional example for first-year students. Participation in this program also helped me develop greater leadership competency. I made the Dean’s List for my outstanding GPA as an undergraduate student. I have had a chance to work in many subfields of I/O psychology during my master's program and have gained versatile experience outside of the classroom. I hope to teach I/O Psychology and devote my professional life to research in our field. My professional engagement has been primarily in healthcare, but I do not see my professional interests as limited to this area, at least for the future. I recently became employed by the VHA in XXXX, Texas, a national healthcare network of not-for-profit hospitals providing members with a broad range of healthcare services. Previously, I spent six months (July 2015- November 2015) with XXXX Healthcare, also in Irving, providing healthcare workforce solutions and staffing services. I want to focus on becoming an inspiring teacher after earning my Ph.D. at XXXX and start my own business, a company that focuses on leadership training and helps budding leaders reach their maximum potential. There is a shortage of such consulting firms in India, and the demand is high. Indian companies rely on foreign trainers. Many Indian companies do not even have a training and development component to their business. After finishing my Ph.D., I want to return to India and contribute to this sector of our economy. You will undoubtedly have applicants with higher GRE scores than mine. But I ask you to consider my excellent grades and extracurricular activities as an indicator of my ability to excel in your program at XXXX University. Thank you for considering my application. - PsyD Clinical Psychology Statement of Purpose, Child-Mother Relationship
Following the path to a Doctor of Psychology and a life serving the psychological needs of others has not been an easy one, the omnipresent question of listening to my parents or to listening to my heart. In a high school introduction to psychology class, my teacher played a movie for us as a treat, the true story of an abused girl with a childhood so traumatic she developed multiple personalities, a story – admittedly extreme – but so compelling and fascinating, illustrating the power of the mind over the body. And my parents, so concerned, convinced me to pursue all the pre-med courses as a part of my undergraduate studies while I wanted to pursue psychology. Their traditional Indian thinking, culture, and a generation apart from mine, was closed to my plans of attending to patients’ minds rather than their bodies. By volunteering my time at the temple and counseling teens who had recently emigrated to America, I could share my immigrant experiences, helping the teens adjust to the new school system brought me immense personal satisfaction, increasingly certain of my future as a psychologist. The interaction was exhilarating, and I found myself returning to these experiences in the future as my theoretical psychology base widened, rethinking the paths I took and how I would address them better in the future. My experiences counseling teens at my temple inspired the direction of my graduate studies. I seek a whole immersion experience in the effects of immigration on attachment styles, domestic violence in minority populations, and intergenerational parenting issues in multicultural immigrant families. I am particularly dedicated to the study of strategic methods of therapeutic intervention. I see XXXX College’s systems approach to clinical psychology as an ideal fit for my graduate direction. As a psychologist, I look forward to encountering many patients from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures and need to be prepared for this. Culture is a significant factor to consider as it affects human psychology and behavior, particularly trust. Coming from an Indian family, I was raised with one view of the world but have also immersed myself in American culture and am an amalgam of my dual experiences, having observed, and appreciated the myriad cultures that abound in this incredibly diverse nation. For the last 14 months, I have been assisting Dr. XXXX with a pilot survey assessing a random sampling of people and their attitudes toward factory farms. More specifically, the survey addresses the relationship between preconceived notions of factory farms and the person’s decision to consider or act upon that knowledge actively. My role has been autonomous, collecting in-person surveys, analyzing data, and scripting a research paper. While the content of the study is not within my scholarly research interest, I have gained invaluable experience in the fundamentals of conducting a clinical research project, an experience that will aid me tremendously with my doctoral dissertation. Since last year I have either had two part-time internships and a full course load or a full-time job and a full course load. Yet, I have maintained a near-perfect GPA. My commitment to my academics is clear from my transcript and resume. Being awarded the Ann S. Khel Scholarship indicates the concern and the energy I give to community service since it is a two-year scholarship from the Colin Powell Center for Policy Studies at City College of New York. It is awarded based on demonstrated commitment to public service. Working at the Jewish Board of Children and Family Services, the New York Psychoanalytical Society, and Northside Child Development in East Harlem has given me exposure to many minority and immigrant children while attending to a variety of special ed, developmental delays, behavioral, communicational, socialization issues, increasing my personal and professional satisfaction and joy. I have found enormous satisfaction in working with relationship dynamics between children and their mothers and helping them to develop healthy, fulfilling, and communicative relationships. I anticipate a lengthy career as an effective psychologist. Ideally, I would like to work for or consult with a non-profit group or community agency assisting the socio-economically challenged. The ideal would be to aid in developing a non-profit organization that serves and encourages at-risk, minority, or immigrant communities, particularly women and children, to better their lives through healthier life choices; strategies of being. My most significant contribution to my patients will always be improving their emotional, mental, and psychological well-being. XXXX College is my first choice for graduate studies because of its small classes, gaining one-on-one type attention from professors, and a more intimate experience in the academic community. More importantly, XXXX emphasizes not just the mind of their students but their spirits as well. Finally, I look forward to enjoying the breathtaking pastoral campus. It is my enthusiasm, dedication, and critical thinking skills that have gotten me this far and have led me to this moment, most eager to succeed in your PsyD in Clinical Psychology program. - MA Sociology Statement of Purpose Example, African American Activist
I was born and raised in White Plains, with the most memorable experience of my childhood being the two years that I spent in my parents' native Nigeria. This direct and prolonged exposure from 9 to 11 years of age inspired me to struggle to succeed, not just for myself, but for my people as well, and development and social justice in Nigeria and all of Africa, as well as America. My long-term goal is to practice law, international and activist law, on behalf of women, people of color, and particularly the Global South. I know this requires a vast intellectual foundation, and I turn to your graduate program in Sociology at XXXX University, where I hope to earn the MA Degree. I am convinced that XXXX is uniquely suited to provide me with the intellectual tools I will need later as an activist attorney. I am a privileged Black girl with a progressive attitude who dreams of social change, reconciliation, and justice. Thus, XXXX College of Criminal Justice appeared to be an excellent choice for my undergraduate studies in Political Science, and I earned my BA in 2006. and then completed a Paralegal Studies Certificate Program at XXXX College. But I am still intellectually hungry. I want to go to law school as a more powerful woman with a master's degree in Sociology under my belt. I want to spend most of my time researching why people do the things that they do: all the most significant theorists, and how to best interpret the effects of behavior, especially for legal purposes. I seek a whole immersion experience in the impact of one's environment on their behavior, social psychology, the sociology of work, gender roles, etc. I am especially interested in doing graduate work in poverty along social class lines, both in America and with respect to developing countries, as well as drug and alcohol abuse. Earning the Master's in at XXXX University will give me the intellectual tools to become the kind of attorney that is my dream for the future. I am a cosmopolitan woman with diverse interests. In addition to my native Ibo from Nigeria, I can also read and write some French and Spanish. Thank you for considering my application to the MA in Sociology Program at XXXX. - Ph.D. Clinical Psychology Statement of Purpose, Forensics, Juvenile Detention
While conscious of myself as a young Mexican woman, I think of myself as a global citizen, and I thrive best on communication. Although Psychology has always been my first love, I was a double major in communication. Still only twenty-two, I have learned the profound value of being a good communicator, practiced, precise, kind, a good listener, and a team player. My first choice for graduate study is at the University of XXXX in their Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program because I am seeking a world-class doctorate in Clinical Psychology that will optimally prepare me for a long and distinguished career in forensics or a related avenue of research and development. It is the criminal mind that draws me to psychology. I am gearing up for Law School, and your program would provide the optimal intellectual platform for that aspiration as well. I am convinced that the area of criminology is central to my destiny because psychology is fundamental to the development of just laws to address our complex criminal realities in increasingly productive ways. I am especially looking forward to doing graduate work concerning the mental health of our at-risk populations, adolescents and adults, incarcerated youth, and most specifically the decision-making of at-risk populations, as well as the long-term effects of childhood victimization. The bulk of my research has been on adolescent females in juvenile detention. I look forward to a lifetime of professional research concerning the underserved or at-risk populations of all age groups. After completing my Ph.D., I plan to explore a career in criminology in addition to going into private practice. My ideal job would be a Psychological Profiler for either the FBI or a police department. I hope to work proactively, protecting potential victims from would-be perpetrators. Raised in a bilingual family, I want to put my Spanish to clever use solving crimes and seeking justice for the perpetrators. I have taken to Spanish poetry as therapy and traveled to Mexico on several occasions to work in orphanages, helping to build homes and spending a long time in a retirement center with elderly residents. Placing a high value on cross-cultural diversity, in LA I volunteered for an organization that helped immigrants from Africa get adjusted to America; and spent a year as a religious studies' assistant teacher at my church where I worked directly with children and adolescents from 10-15. I have spent most of my last two years doing research that included going into the Santa Clara detention center and interviewing incarcerated girls. I am extremely hardworking and passionate. Although my GRE scores are not strong except for the analytical section, I have proven myself to be a hardworking student by graduating with honors in both of my majors, taking an overload of up to twenty-four units a quarter. Often the head of my team for group assignments, I always struggled to make our team as diligent and productive as possible, doing far more interview work than any other research assistant.
