Spanish-Speaker SLP Personal Purpose Statement

Updated: Apr 22

I could not enjoy my current professional position more, anxious to get to work each day as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) at XXXX Therapies in Hobbs, NM. I work with children and their families with developmental delays from birth through three years of age. Looking forward to a long professional life doing what I do now, I hope to earn the master's degree to serve as a certified professional, working alongside other professionals providing speech and developmental therapies to reach the milestones we set for every client. No work appears nobler to me than preventing, assessing, diagnosing, and treating children's speech, language, communication, cognitive, and swallowing disorders. Thus, I look forward to earning my Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology and becoming a practicing SLP professional. Committed to lifelong education, I look forward to decades of study and research ahead, but most of all, the one-on-one contact with those little ones I seek to help.

XXXX University is my first choice for graduate study because of my deep admiration for your Christian-based values. Since my Christian faith has always been a prominent factor in my choice of SLP as a career, motivating me forward to excellence in this area, XXXX is the best choice. Caring for the community, healing, inspiring, and lifting are the core principles that inform my sense of the power that resides in the name of Jesus. Christianity is a vehicle of expression for a reason and a receptacle of wisdom. I also appreciate the fact that I can study online. Distance learning will be perfect for me, working late into the night to learn how to do what I do in the daytime much better, preparing me for a lifetime of experienced and highly trained excellence in SLP.

I love helping children and believe very strongly that this is my calling. I have wanted to work with children since I was a teenager. When my best friend's son of 15 years was diagnosed with polymicrogyria and septo-optic dysplasia, this interest intensified. My grandfather was also diagnosed with Dysphasia two years ago while I was an undergraduate in Communicative Disorders, further heightening my curiosity and passion for this study area. Thus, earning my BS in Communicative Disorders this year, 2019, set me on my path, leaving me hungry for graduate school.

At the center of my world stand children who are non-verbal, at various points on the autism spectrum, with spinal Bifida, cortical blindness, and language delays. Each child is impressive, and each brings a new professional experience replete with new challenges. I especially love how autistic children can often make breakthroughs and show tremendous emotion and compassion; nothing makes me so happy. I particularly enjoy praising them when they complete a task. While born in the USA, my Latino family retains their Spanish, and I am fluent in conversation and learning to improve my ability to write in Spanish. It is a special privilege to work with children in Spanish and English, and it pleases me that there are many Latinos in New Mexico. I am also learning ASL. So far, some of my career highlights have also been shadowing SLPs in the XXXX Municipal School system, helping children with articulation activities, non-verbal cues, and various communication strategies appropriate for their age and condition.

Thank you for considering my application.
