Currently an employee of the government of Mexico in charge of Political Affairs at the Embassy of Mexico to the Holy See (Vatican City), I conduct domestic and foreign affairs activities involving Mexico and the Vatican. I also provide political analysis concerning Mexico/Vatican relations, making policy recommendations, etc. Previously, my most distinguished post was that of Congressman in the State Legislature of San Luis Potosí, Mexico (2012 - 2015).
I hope to earn the MPA Degree at XXXX University and learn from my teachers and colleagues from all over the world at the XXXX Center of Government and renowned institutions at XXXX dedicated to governance and administration. The fact that the content of my studies at XXXX could be tailored to my professional goals is perfect for me and will help me make the entire professional contribution possible. These are challenging times for Mexico primarily because we have hit something of a historical low point in our relations with the USA, the government of which is trying to force us by economic pressure to pay for a wall on our northern border, which almost no Mexican wants (unless he is hoping to find work on the construction). I cannot help but be reminded of the words of Mexico’s last long-term dictator, Porfirio Diaz, who lamented a century ago: “Poor Mexico, so far from God and so close to the United States.
I consider Mexico a part of the developing world since it is, at best, a newly industrialized country. We are often cited as an example of relevance, given our location and intimate economic relationship with the colossus to the north, to which many eyes are often turned. It would be the most profound honor of my lifetime. I also like to think that it would be an honor for Mexico as well if I were to be chosen not only for participation in the Mason Program by earning my MC/MPA but also to take part in the two-week Mason Fellows Summer Seminar preceding the Mid-Career Summer Program; in both of which I keenly look forward to participating. As a public manager and social investigator, my studies thus far have been in Administration and Political Science. One of my career highlights included International Politics Summer School at Oxford University (2018).
While it is too soon to tell, there are alarming new signs, as with AMLO’s decision about a desperately needed airport, that Mexico might be following at least some aspects of Venezuela’s failed strategy. I am no exception; Mexicans are concerned about crime, especially street crime, murder, and assault. My mother was mugged long ago, making it feel close to home. It has happened to dozens of friends and friends of friends. Mexico continues to be the gold standard for murder rates, only rivaled recently by the failed state of Venezuela. I hope to contribute what I can throughout my career to lower the violence in Mexico, which is tied up in complex ways with the economic draw over its northern border. Hence, my intense passion for and fascination with studying US/Mexico Relations, at which I hope to excel at XXXX. My grandfather had to leave primary school to help his mother, working to survive. Mexico was once a land where many hardworking people often found an opportunity to achieve their dreams. However, recent reports by the OECD and Transparency International place Mexico as the most unequal, corrupt, and violent country of all OECD member countries. However, the OECD and Transparency International report identifies Mexico as the most unequal and unethical; I have personally witnessed and experienced these circumstances with profound frustration and sadness. Today, half of the population lives in poverty. I am convinced that this is because Mexico needs better administrators.
Public service is the most ethical responsibility a citizen can have because it allows one to simultaneously improve many people's lives. I am also convinced that public service requires academic preparation alongside essential values such as honesty, leadership, teamwork, and a deep conviction to positively impact my study and involvement in public service. I have also founded my organization, “Dignifying Politics,” a civil association that promotes public service training and professionalism, evaluating a public servant´s work in the legislative and executive arenas.
