Art History and its culture, the contemporary art world and its marketplace, both stand at the center of my world. Much of my childhood and adolescence was dedicated to sport and I was happy to rise to the level of the second best female table tennis player in all of China. But my world is Art. An avid student of Art at home in China, I left at 18 to discover the Art of North America, in both Canada and the USA. Now, my central dream and most fervent aspiration is to be selected to earn my MA Degree in Culture, Criticism, and Curation from the University of XXXX, my dream school. First appreciating the art of Asia, I have spent 7 years studying art in North America and now want to focus on European Art.
In Toronto, I volunteered with Nuit Blanche, serving as a tour guide for art projects and relished seeing Toronto transformed by hundreds of Canadian and international artists and visitors. I also helped out with an art project called “Literature vs Traffic” doing interventions in public spaces using light as a raw material and darkness as an artistic canvas. With only one online course to go to complete my BA Degree in Media, Performance and Design from the School of the Arts at York University in Canada, I relocated to the University of California San Diego to begin study toward a Certificate in Art and Creative Process. I study Art and its history not only in school, but also constantly on my own: documentaries, books, museums – Metropolitan, Guggenheim, LA County – never missing a nearby exhibition or art auction. I also started my own social group dedicated to collecting and discussing works of art and I am especially pleased to have several curators in the group.
As an international student, I came to Canada by myself. I did not know what major should I choose and after a year of under-decided major, I chose Visual art. My English was not good enough and I feel frustrated. I was left behind and started wondering what I should do in the future. I got lost, at the same time, my grandfather passed away. I went back to China for a year before I graduate, I worked at an interior design company. In the meantime, I use my spare time to visit galleries (Gagosian, Hauser&Wirth, Massimo De Carlo, and Pace Gallery, etc.) Hongkong and mainland China. I am addicted to art history and contemporary art, I found my way. I started to learn art history very hard. I go to exhibitions and taking note, talk to contemporary artist, pay attention to the art market. After talking to some Chinese contemporary artists and curators in China, I I learnt a lot and figure out I have to go back to school. I want to catch up what I have left behind and want to start a new life.
I am a Chinese woman whose first love is Art. Nothing excites me as much as Art, and the learning process itself – especially about Art. Now 24, however, Art has not always been the dominant force in my life. Rather, I give most of my energy and youth so far to sports, especially table tennis which I have played since the age of 6, the same year that I began learning English intensively. My most singular achievement so far has been rising to the rank of the number 2, female table tennis (ping pong) champion of China. Since I have only one more online class to take to graduate from university. I came to the United State-the heart of contemporary art last September, sign up for the Art and Creative Process Certificate in UC XXXX where I studied painting, drawing, creative process and art history class. I earned the grade of 'A' for all of my classes.
7 years academic background of Art in North America, I have taken Art classes and have painting, sculpting and photography skills and sharp sense of art. We have critique session in every studio class, I know how to appreciate and evaluate an artwork. I always followed up to the latest art news in China and in western World. In the meantime, I have been to many contemporary galleries and art fairs around the world, care and watch the art auction and know a lot of contemporary artist. I was an art major and I am obsessed with art history. Art has traced many of the sociological changes that have occurred throughout history, all through the eyes of real people. I love travel, every place I have been, I go to the museums and galleries at that place. I love reading, I read at myself at least 1 hour a day. I love sport and music. I go to gym 4 times a week and always keep myself fit and healthy. I have friends in different age, career, and ethnic. I started to live independently when I was 18. I have my own schedule and I always follow it. I have a sharp sense of humor, rich experience in organization. Good at dealing with pressure from work and daily life. Attentive to details, able to quickly and effectively prioritize to meet deadlines. Trustworthy and discreet with the maturity to work well both independently and in a team environment. Highly motivated and confident, able to quickly adapt and have an insatiable thirst to learn the world. I am creative and have strong practical abilities.
